In need of a new camera.

Ok guys, first we go to bad news first. For me, it is a real bad one.

I just got my first camera about a week ago. It was Panasonic fz-8, prosumer digital camera. I bought it online after an extensive 2 weeks surveying and reading reviews almost everywhere on the Net.

I can say that I was lucky. The camera produces good picture, which is somehow up to my expectation. Yeah, I was not using any camera before, but having through so many pictures in my life makes me favor natural and vivid color pictures than a soft and dull one. A manual operation means I can experiment with more settings.

Enough for introduction. Last Thursday (27 of Sept), my buddy, the Panasonic fz-8, along with a Nikon bag (and so many other belongings inside the bag) was stolen while I prayed. Their values are more than RM2 500. It was indeed a shame for a Muslim like me to tell that people does steal in the mosque, but, yes, we know bad people is everywhere. This is not heaven.

I had made a report to the police. Had made visits to most of the camera and phone shoppes available, and will post bills asking for help around Kuala Terengganu city. I even think to ask Panasonic Malaysia for help. The unit was lost without its battery, so anyone who intend to use the unit needs to get a new battery. I am full aware that he might got it anywhere (Logically, if someone managed to 'kidnap' my camera, he can got the battery FREE too. Or through the Net), but, yeah, small help (such as faxing to Panasonic distributors about the unit's details) is a help anyway.

However, as a human, that always try to be as rational as possible(though I am ready mad and sad), I know that this is a farewell for me.

This is where your help is needed. Maybe the first help is if anyone insist to sell you a black Panasonic fz-8 with reference number, CF7210174, you may pm me.

Second, I had fall in love with the photography. That one week owning a camera taught me a lot about good focus (even though I still cannot use manual focus), about white balance and aperture. More important, it taught me to see world in different way, to value each scene and things which available, and to give good damn care about interesting subjects and lights around us.

It is not by default, a good news, but thanks to God, I still have some budget to buy a new camera.

The question is: which type of camera i should invest in? For this second time.

I am thinking of a DSLR. Nikon d40 with kit is just a bit high than my budget, but in one or two months I will have the money. Or the Pentax k100d. The challenge ( I don't like to call it 'problem') is there are so many things that i do not know. D SLR sounds very technical to me in term of operating it.

We know Ferrari is fast, but most of us cannot go THAT fast without tasting an accident. Nikon d40 maybe a good camera, but does it consumes me much more time than point and shoot camera in order to get good pictures?

And I like taking telephoto very much ( I am not sure whether I really does like the function, but I use it frequently on my fz8. Mostly in order to get close up photos with blur back ground behind it. I use it to take animal pictures too.)

Lenses cost another bucks for me (in fact, anyone). As a student ( who writes for living), money does limit me. Still, learning photography is for me, an investment. Is it a good investment to buy a DSLR (and forgot about the telephoto things for a while), or to buy a point and shoot camera first, and master it in advance? Which means buying the DSLR later?

If not the Nikon D40, or the Pentax k100, I am considering the fz8 (again) in my list. If not, the fz18 (an upgrade of fz8 with wider lens and higher optical zoom. Also more pre-set), or fz50 (no wider or higher zoom, but with manual focus ring). I am not a Pana fan. Just it seems that Panasonic builds better package of prosumer camera than others.

You can put ultra compact or compact camera in the list. I am a new user, which needs more info and experience in choosing a right gear.

With all the details, please enlighten me. Thank you.
