Like a lot of other world leaders, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is now in the business of calming his citizens down. But he’s also a pragmatist. Last week at an update on COVID-19, he said, “The reality is also that in the coming period a large part of the population will be infected with the virus.”

That’s why the Dutch are trialling a different strategy to protect the vulnerable: they’re trying to achieve so-called “herd immunity,” the term for what happens when enough people have survived the disease to effectively slow its spread. “As we wait for a vaccine or medicine, we can slow down the virus spreading and at the same time build up herd immunity in a controlled manner,” Rutte said.

Going out is very risky. All kinds of possibility to get infected.

Just now I went to the supermarket and get some fresh veges, I was walking at the street someone without mask just sneeze. I can imagine all the micro droplets flying in the air. I was horrified, luckily he was quite a distance away and I ran away from him. Insensitive and inconsiderate people like this are everywhere, and all it takes is an accidental sneeze like this towards you to get infected. This is just one of the many dangers going out during time like this.

So I decided not to go out anymore unless it is inevitable.

Currently, I have used happyfresh and tesco online. Any good/better ones to share?

Kali Yuga

In Hinduism, Kali Yuga (lit. 'age of Kali') is the last of the four stages (or ages or yugas) the world goes through as part of a 'cycle of yugas' described in the Sanskrit scriptures. The other ages are called Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, and Dvapara Yuga.

The "Kali" of Kali Yuga means "strife", "discord", "quarrel" or "contention".

According to Puranic sources, Krishna's departure marks the end of Dvapara Yuga and the start of Kali Yuga, which is dated to 17/18 February 3102 BCE.

Based on a start year of 3102 BCE and a duration of 432,000 years or 12,000 divine years, Kali Yuga started roughly 5,121 years ago with 426,879 years remaining as of 2020 CE.

Prophesied events

A discourse by Markandeya in the Mahabharata identifies some of the attributes of Kali Yuga.

In relation to rulers, it lists:

- Rulers will become unreasonable: they will levy taxes unfairly.
- Rulers will no longer see it as their duty to promote spirituality, or to protect their subjects: they will become a danger to the world.
- People will start migrating, seeking countries where wheat and barley form the staple food source.
- "At the end of Kali-yuga, when there exist no topics on the subject of God, even at the residences of so-called saints and respectable gentlemen of the three higher varnas (guna or temperament) and when nothing is known of the techniques of sacrifice, even by word, at that time the Lord will appear as the supreme chastiser." (Srimad-Bhagavatam (2.7)

With regard to human relationships, Markandeya's discourse says:

- Avarice and wrath will be common. Humans will openly display animosity towards each other. Ignorance of dharma will occur.
- Religion, truthfulness, cleanliness, tolerance, mercy, physical strength and memory diminish with each passing day.
- People will have thoughts of murder with no justification and will see nothing wrong in that.
- Lust will be viewed as socially acceptable and sexual intercourse will be seen as the central requirement of life.
- Sin will increase exponentially, while virtue will fade and cease to flourish.
- People will become addicted to intoxicating drinks and drugs.
- Gurus will no longer be respected and their students will attempt to injure them. Their teachings will be insulted, and followers of Kama will wrest control of the mind from all human beings.
- All the human beings will declare themselves as gods or boon given by gods and make it as a business instead of teachings.
- People will no longer get married and live with each other just for sexual pleasure.
- Weather and environment will degrade with time and frequent and unpredictable rainfalls will happen.
- Earthquakes will be common.
- Maximum age of humans will be 50 years by the end of Kali Yuga.
- Many fake ideologies will spread throughout the world.
- The powerful people will dominate the poor people.
- Many diseases will spread.
- At the end of Kali Yuga, lord Vishnu will take birth on earth to wipe out the sinners.

If we can slow the virus down, it could save hundreds of thousands of lives.

In March 2020, the World Health Organization officially classified Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, as a pandemic. That means the disease no longer constitutes just an outbreak or even an epidemic; the coronavirus has now spread around the world, and will continue to reach into other countries and communities.

That’s in part because of how contagious the virus is. When you’re infected with the flu, it takes about two days before you start to show symptoms. But coronavirus symptoms take an average of five to six days to appear, so it’s easy to spread well before you notice that you’re feeling sick. Many people are spreading it while going about their daily lives as usual.

The risk is that once coronavirus starts to spread in a community, about 20% of cases are severe and may require hospitalization. As those cases multiply, hospitals can fill up quickly. And people with severe cases of COVID-19 who can’t receive proper medical attention are at a much higher risk of dying.

Ideally, we would be able to stop the virus from spreading entirely. We can’t do that right now. What we can do is slow it down, so that the severe cases get spread out over a longer period of time, and hospitals are less likely to be overwhelmed on any given day. And that’s where each one of us comes in. The best way to slow down the spread is for everyone — healthy, sick, young, old — to limit social contact as much as possible, immediately. This is called social distancing, and it only works if enough of us do it. But if we do, it could mean the difference between the life and death of someone you know.

We know that the COVID-19 outbreak originated in Wuhan, China, but as of yet how the outbreak began is somewhat of a mystery. We’ve heard that seafood, snakes, and a whole host of other conspiracy theories surrounding the viruses origin, but it seems that preliminary evidence is pointing to a familiar source: bats.

And the novel coronavirus is not the only virus that's been associated with these flying mammals. Ebola, SARS, MERS, Marburg, Nipah—the list goes on.

So why are bats the perfect hosts for these types of viruses, and why aren't they affected by them? The reason might have to do with how bats evolved to fly.

What it's like living in China during the outbreak

I created this video to share my personal experience of what it's like living in China during the coronavirus outbreak.

Feb was when the outbreak in China was at its peak, it took the entire country's medical power, extreme social distancing and huge economic sacrifice to contain the virus. Feb was also when we felt the most alone and fearful.

Now things are finally slowly getting back to normal here. Parks, restaurants, museums are all opening up again. I've been working out of our office building for 3 weeks. And the national health committee has announced that the worst of the outbreak in China has passed.

I hope by making this video it will provide hope that there is an end to this. And when it does, it'll be up to us what we learn from it and what kind of person we choose to be in face of a crisis.

All in all looking back, I'm grateful for this outbreak, as it has taught me valuable lessons I wouldn't have learnt otherwise. I really do hope this video will provide some hope and reassurance in midst of chaos. (If it doesn't, I apologize and please be kind in the comments.)

Germany confirms that Trump tried to buy firm working on coronavirus vaccine

CureVac boss was at the White House last week to discuss its vaccines plans.

The Donald Trump administration offered “large sums of money” to get exclusive access to a coronavirus vaccine being developed by a German company, Die Welt reported Sunday.

According to the article, Trump was trying to get the Tübingen-based CureVac company — which also has sites in Frankfurt and Boston — to move its research wing to the United States and develop the vaccine “for the U.S. only.”

A spokesperson for Germany’s Health Ministry quoted in the article appeared to acknowledge the U.S. approach and said that Berlin was “very interested in ensuring that vaccines and active substances against the new coronavirus are also developed in Germany and Europe.”

On Sunday afternoon, Germany’s Health Ministry told Reuters that its spokesperson had been quoted correctly in the newspaper article, confirming that Washington had attempted to take over the biopharmaceutical company. Government sources indicated that Berlin was now offering CureVac financial incentives to remain in Germany.

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said at a press conference Sunday that he had heard about the CureVac reports and that it would be discussed at a crisis team meeting Monday.

Richard Grenell, the U.S. ambassador to Germany, said on Twitter that the Welt report was “wrong.”

Last week CureVac CEO Daniel Menichella was among the pharmaceutical representatives invited to the White House to discuss coronavirus vaccine development with Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and members of the president’s Coronavirus Task Force.

In a press release, the company said that Menichella had told U.S. officials about the vaccines it had in development, and revealed its hope to have an experimental vaccine ready by early summer.

The news prompted angry reactions from German politicians who demanded that Berlin do everything possible to prevent the U.S. from controlling access to an eventual coronavirus vaccine.

“The American regime has committed an extremely unfriendly act,” said Social Democrat MP Karl Lauterbach, who said that German health workers on the front lines — as well as people around the world — needed to have access to something developed in Germany, and that no country should be able to purchase exclusive access to the vaccine.

“Capitalism has limits,” he said.
