Minister for Finance Heng Swee Keat has undergone neurosurgery after suffering a stroke due to an aneurysm.

Heng, 54, earlier collapsed on Thursday during a Cabinet meeting at 5.34pm and was taken to hospital immediately where a CT scan showed he had suffered a stroke. Aneurysm is a localised weakening of a blood vessel.

“He underwent initial neurosurgery to relieve pressure in his brain due to the bleeding. The aneurysm was successfully closed,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement on Thursday night (12 May).

Heng will remain under close monitoring in the intensive care unit of Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the statement added.

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam will be covering Heng’s duties with immediate effect, a separate PMO statement said.

In a Facebook post at 9:49pm, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said that Heng had just undergone surgery.

Earlier, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, posting on Facebook, said the three doctors in the Cabinet had attended to Heng immediately and the ambulance took him to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Lee added that he hoped Heng “will be alright”, calling him a “valuable member of my team”.

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, also posting on Facebook, said, “He is one of Singapore’s finest sons, and a leader with much promise.”

President Tony Tan also wished Heng a speedy recovery.

Minister for Home Affairs K. Shanmugam, who is also Law Minister, said on Facebook that Heng “was carrying an incredible load handling the Finance Ministry” and “various important projects”.

“I could see that he was very tired. I have been telling him that he was overworking so much that it will affect his health,” Shanmugam said.

Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen, a surgeon before he entered politics, said, “We managed to resuscitate him but he and his family will now need all our prayers and support as he undergoes critical procedures and treatment for the stroke.”

Well wishes for Heng also poured in from the opposition parties, including the Workers’ Party and the Singapore Democratic Party.

Heng, also a Member-of-Parliament for Tampines Group Representation Constituency, was named Finance Minister after the General Election in 2015.

He had previously served as Education Minister from 2011 to 2015. Prior to entering politics in 2011, he was Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Heng has also held other positions in the civil service, including serving as Principal Private Secretary to then-Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew and as a member of the Singapore Police Force, where he was a scholar and rose from constable to Assistant Commissioner of Police.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korea stepped up its calls Tuesday for South Korea to return 12 waitresses whom Pyongyang says Seoul abducted from a restaurant in China.

Seoul says the waitresses willingly defected to the South.

North Korean authorities on Tuesday presented the colleagues and parents of the waitresses to North Korean and international media in Pyongyang. North Korea says the women were tricked into thinking they were being transferred to work at another restaurant in Malaysia.

On April 8, South Korean authorities announced the arrival of 13 North Koreans in the South — the 12 waitresses and their manager. Since then, North Korean authorities have issued repeated statements calling on Seoul to return the waitresses or let their parents go to Seoul to meet them.

Colleagues of the waitresses said their manager told them they were moving to Malaysia to work in another restaurant there and that the waitresses who got on a bus from their restaurant to go on the journey thought Malaysia was their final destination.

Waitress Choe Rye Yong said that as the waitresses were being organized to leave she overheard her manager refer to a man with him as "team leader" from the South Korean National Intelligence Service. That made her warn her colleagues, who had not yet gotten on the bus, to stay away.

The waitresses were all working at a restaurant called the Azalea Friendship Restaurant in Ningbo, China.

They said they had previously worked at another North Korean-run restaurant in Yanji, in the northeast of China
