Maxis supported line speed

I'm currently transferring from Unifi to Maxis Family 399 plan

Existing premise has 2Gbps Unifi, 2.5Gbps ONU/ONR supplied by Unifi

Maxis just got back to me this morning and informed me that their tech said that my place only supports 1Gbps max. Asked the agent why only 1Gbps when my existing line is 2Gbps, they just informed me that Unifi might be 1+1Gbps instead of 2Gbps full line, which I know it's not as I'm one of the later adopters of 2Gbps where the line is 2Gbps single line instead of 1+1.

Is this just TM's infra kneecapping Maxis from getting the maximum speed possible for their clients?

Go full U6E or full EAP670

Dilemma

Bought the EAP670 expecting it to cover the whole premise, but some dead spots are on the second floor of the house

Currently planning either to buy another EAP670 for mesh or just go single U6E for the whole house since 2x EAP670 costs the same as one U6E and has an extra 6GHz radio

Or should I just run with wx EAP670 for now until WiFi 7 is released? Or bite the bullet and get the U6E and sell off the EAP670?

Verdicts?

Quick review of TP-Link TL-XAP3007GC

So a while ago, I've bought a TL-XAP3007GC-PoE/DC易展版 (Chinese Version of the EAP650 from what I can gather) from Taobao for about RM270 shipped to MY.

Just a brief review, for what the price, I'd personally say for what it costs that it's worth it.

Currently I'm just running it in FIT mode for just AP usage without any remote/cloud management enabled. It can be powered either through normal DC12V or PoE 802.3at, I'm currently running it with PoE.

Price
For RM270, for what hardware you get, it's a no brainer. Considering what the EAP650 costs(RM600-RM700 approx on Shopee), and what other brands enterprise AX AP costs as well, this is one of the, if not the cheapest WiFi 6 AP you can find. Sure brands on AliExpress like COMFAST is about the same if not cheaper, but I trust TP-LINK to do well with the web interface compared to COMFAST. Not saying that their products are bad, but TP-LINK's track record is a lot better despite it being a chinese market specific model.

Packaging
[attachmentid=11477369]
Nothing too special, just a normal fairly non descriptive box
[attachmentid=11477368]
Fairly standard packaging for electronics, also comes with mounting hardware for it

Features/WebUI
Quite robust for what it costs, but it's in full Chinese and there's no way to change or hack it as far as I know, so Google Translate will have to be your best friend if you don't speak or read chinese. Some screenshots will be attached below, won’t be going through all of it but if you know your internet equipment well, all these settings should be fairly self explanatory, there’s 5 main tabs and sub menus underneath them. Unable to embed in post so will be in an imgur album.
https://imgur.com/a/5AkNbVM

Coverage
For coverage, at my parents, it used to be 1 Xiaomi AX1800 main router, 1 Meraki MR12 as AP in the middle of the house and 1 TP-Link Archer C6 on the top floor, all running on hardwired, with that setup, it’s possible to cover every area of the house for Wi-Fi coverage, not great since it’s basically 802.1n/ac/ax mixed all together for the devices to switch around manually

BUT the TL-XAP3007GC replaced all of it and handles the whole house Wi-Fi with basically no dead spots, even able to do about 10-20mbps on 5GHz through about 2 walls and about 50m away from it, very respectable for the price

Attached below are some speed tests to my local server, on a Samsung Galaxy S21 5G. Consistently pulls about 650-800mbps, not gigabit but that’s limited by the gigabit port on both my server and the AP, so I’ll forgive it. Also do note that my server is a hard disk based server so it might be somewhat impacting the actual throughput it can sustain.
2.4GHz AX Test
Through 2 walls
[attachmentid=11477364]
LOS
[attachmentid=11477365]
5GHz AX Test
Through 2 walls
[attachmentid=11477366]
LOS
[attachmentid=11477367]

Physical dimensions and weight
If you’ve seen or been hands on with any of TP-Link’s AP, it’s basically the same shell just different software, not too heavy(about 0.5KG) so can be mounted with adhesive relatively easily if drilling is not viable for your place.

Special functions
It mainly advertises its 易展 mode which is like easily expandable with direct translation, kinda like Mesh but for enterprise usage? I don’t use any of the cloud function since I only use 1 AP but I won’t trust it too much since it communicates with TP-Link’s China server.

Lighting
Pretty self explanatory, 1 light beside the LAN port to indicate activity, 1 on the bottom of the AP to indicate AP status. And you will be able to turn off the one under the AP to prevent distractions.
[attachmentid=11477370]
[attachmentid=11477371]
[attachmentid=11477372]

Overall verdict
If you’re comfortable with using what is basically the china version of the EAP650, go for it, i imported it together with other internet products from taobao, switch, cables, motherboard and all, added together for >RM500 and didn’t had any issues importing. So I’d highly recommend going for it if you want to seriously level up your Wi-Fi game, but that’s just me and you might have a different experience buying it. I’m using taobao official shipping and not any reshipper.

With all that said, I will be selling this away for RM200 shipped as I just upgraded to the EAP670, not a huge upgrade but I bought it on a wimp due to the discounts so might as well. If you want this, currently it’s been in use for about 1-2 months ish, and everything is still like new, except the mounting plate as I “modified” that a little bit cause the plastic is so stiff that it won’t lock in properly without bending the plastic a little bit. If you’re interested, you can contact me and I’ll be happy to sell it to anyone looking for equipment like this on the cheap. But if you want it brand new, I’ll be putting links directly to the listing on taobao as well for you to purchase it yourself.

TL-XAP3007GC Taobao Purchase Link

Long live consumer electronics in China, never fails with their price despite everything

Advice on going SG

So, long story short, am Male, 22 turning 23 this yr. Currently based in JB, graduated Diploma in Entertainment Arts at KL (TV Prod, Perf, Backstage Managing w/e, basically any TV/shows based I have studied).

Graduated right at the height of COVID in MY (May 2020), was working as an intern(right in between my graduation and time of employment as an intern) at a production company but time got cut short (3 months cut to 3 weeks, same with the projects we were assigned).

Fast forward to 2021, still was kinda stuck in limbo (Parents being paranoid af of COVID - my younger siblings caught COVID and afraid of me going out to work due to fear of infection), so only started working at another place during end of Nov(Worked at a Game design company, media dept - producing ads and stuff), but didn't last long cuz of work place culture being shitty and left during Dec.

After quitting that job, got hit with COVID(Myself and my parents this time), only went for a job after Jan ended (Working as a waiter in F&B). Worked there for 5-6 months ish, quit due to HR of that particular franchise just being horrendous (Late salary payment, no proper compensation for anything, bad pay).

Was insisting on not going to SG due to their work culture/environment being you guys know it, and wanted to go to KL for proper media jobs. But changed my mine slowly cuz of my parents needing my help to support the fam(Paying for new houses, siblings tuition and paying for basically everything that can be offloaded to me, they're both in their 50s at this point so I know it was coming), also working in media means extremely long working hours, and unorthodox schedules(Which I kinda was stressed over when I was in my intern period). So tried to pivot to working in IT since I always had interest in it just never pursued it due to fear of it becoming a baggage to myself rather than a proper career. Tried local but most of them are looking for programmers, backend devs, frontend devs, devops you name it, where I only have rudimentary IT server knowledge (Basic Linux/Networking/Server hardware, a homelab-er level of skill if you catch my drift). So no luck, tried going for SG jobs for a while but most of them aren't willing to sponsor WP for a guy like me where there's not much experience and not much return in the short term, for tech jobs anyway. Also not helping when I have mild ADHD myself, and working any office jobs that requires me to sit in the same place for 8 hrs is just not gonna end well.

And since I didn't want to fall into the food services industry trap again (Work 6 days a week, 12 hours a day and at most 1 tier of career progression), I tried my hardest to pivot away from applying for those jobs, almost went for a very typical 6 day, 12 hr work in a restaurant but out of nowhere while scrolling through job postings, I hit a job where job scopes are just sales(Security solutions - network switches, security systems, CCTVs, NVR you name it as a solution to customers/big companies). Listing job details below

2.2K SGD basic, with 1% commission if unable to hit 25k target, 5% if able to hit. AL 12 days, ML 14 days, MC up to 300sgd/year, with also reimbursement for transportation.

Should I just take this opportunity up and go? And network out from there in SG? Pay is certainly the most basic and typical but it's probably gonna be a lot better for me in the short term at least to get financial stability to help provide for my family.

Would appreciate any advice given.
How does the "unlimited modems" actually work?

I'm sure almost everyone here has seen the "unlimited mod modem" for sale on places like Shopee/Carousell etc.

How does these modems actually work? Do they modify TTL from the router level instead of doing it on each device separately? Or? Cuz I've been wanting to buy one of these devices but there's so many of them I don't even know what or how to choose from them. Also I've seen multiple different models that is "modified" from telco provided locked modems, what did they do to so call "modify" it and make it work with non telco specified SIM cards, and what software do they use to accomplish these mods? And is it doable for a normal user that wants to DIY and save some money? As these modems are not exactly what I'd call cheap.

Currently I'm planning to look for one that can be brought on the go, but what model should I go for? Hopefully all sifus can help. My use case is mostly just on the go, car, a random location with no wifi but decent cell signal, I know there's USB to barrel plug for lower powered DC devices, would that work with any of the modems thats available on Shopee? If not, how about those small MiFi devices, how's their performance? And what downside do those have compared to the Huawei B618 for example? Appreciate any answers, but if I'm violating any rules on here asking about these, feel free to delete this thread mods.

How to get a public IP from Unifi

I saw a post in the official unifi thread on how to get a public IP from Unifi for packages under 300mbps, I personally currently am running a Xpenology NAS with 2 cameras(1 hikvision and 1 TP-Link Tapo recording locally to my NAS), would I have to provide the serial of my synology box for NVR and also my cameras serial? And after that they'd need to do a visit to check on the legitimacy of my setup or what? Appreciate any answers given.

Bad peering to Hetzner?

Hi all, just noticed something peculiar with my dedi hosted in Hetzner, recently my peering speeds has been extra bad lately, before this it worked well enough to download speed at my maximum connection speed. Has there been any issues with TM or something?

If I remember correctly there was one instance like 2-3 days ago that disconnected my connection without my ONU unit failing with red light. Wonder if that error had something to do with bad peering.

Before the bad speed/peering issue, I can get a decent 2mb-3mb(not consistent but it's serviceable), now I struggle to get even 500kbps, it fluctuates from 1-10kbps to 200-300kbps. I do know that TM has had issues to international services since COVID started but it looks like it has been getting consistently worst recently.

Also I'm running dual stack IPv4 + IPv6 on my Archer C6, and I have also gotten an issue where I'd get "Poor service" and from googling it looks like TM's IPv6 has been causing issues as well..

So one of my friends showed me this site just now and the prices seems too good to be true at first glance. Has anyone bought anything from them or are they a trusted vendor in general? Apparently they also had a “supposedly” refurbished M1 Macbook for 799, which is another red flag in general.. would appreciate any input on this vendor.

https://www.techworldmy.com

Forwarding package service from Malaysia to US?

Hi Lowyat,

Wanna ask if anyone here knows any freight shipper that does Malaysia to USA? I've seen a lot of US to Malaysia but a quick google returns nothing much helpful with Malaysia to USA. Would appreciate any recommendations, fyi, I'm shipping gifts and memorabilia that weight less than 500 in total. Cheaper the better ofc

IPTV in Malaysia

Hi everyone,

I've been looking at Malaysia's TV info recently and have found out that Unifi no longer provides STB Boxes and the new Unifi Plus boxes only uses the PlayUnifi app(Which I only can assume is OTT based), and not using a dedicated port on routers/switches anymore to use multicast as sources. But is multicast still technically provided by Unifi/Astro? I'm more curious about Unifi's current IPTV implementation and if using multicast directly is still possible. (udp://239.192.100.1 - udp://239.192.100.255 etc etc) I'm not concerned about Astro as their satellite channels can be watched easily with specific hardware without official Astro STBs . As for why not just go for OTT, I'm a quality over quantity snob (I prefer to wait for highest fidelity and not watch low quality streams with issues such as delays, bad encoding, blurry, laggy streams as most streams are just HDMI captures downmixed to fit webstreams), which comes the question, can I just get old Unifi STBs from second hand marketplaces like Carousell/Facebook Marketplace and let TM bind the STB's MAC to my current Unifi account (Subscribing to Unifi package, or if there's no need to and I can just force my NAS to subscribe to a multicast address and watch the streams) and have access to multicast streams again. (Yes I am aware Conditional Access exists but any channels that doesn't have CA is just another great addition to my own Tvheadend box)

Importing hard disk, yay or nay?

So currently my self built NAS has sustained a drive failure where both my 1TB drive has failed(Raided in JBOD), and I'm currently trying to for new hard disks to be used in it, currently I'm trying to recover from the JBOD array but the outlook doesn't look ideal, so I've looked on second hand markets and such(I'll be building with redundancy this time just in case), 1TB is generally in the price range of RM80 - RM110, 2TB around RM150-RM170 etc etc, but when looking on eBay, I can get HGST/Seagate 4TB HDDs for 59.99$ (Free shipping), but haven't counted the reshipping fee to Malaysia, so was wondering if it's worth paying extra for more capacity from the US or just buy it locally. Would appreciate any advice this time.

(I'll be storing mostly static files such as movies/tv shows/music/documents and such and nothing really like on demand real time writing.)

Would post the listing to the drives on eBay but since I'm still on probation.. yeah

And also, is it possible that my drive has damage even when S.M.A.R.T. doesn't indicate any damage on the drives? As I checked my S.M.A.R.T. on my 1TB before this and they were fine but for some reason it sustained such major damage, I have another 160GB cause it was just lying around at the time, this drive has basically 0% health left with Disk Sentinel and yellow/near read S.M.A.R.T. status in HDTune.

Looking for a phone to do debugging on

Hi lowyat, right now I'm trying to buy a phone for debugging with DRM protection and I'm trying to find a phone to do debugging on. I have currently have my eyes on Pixel 3, but is currently trying to outsource to other options. I'm also currently considering Xiaomi/Mi phones but they don't look like a good deal right now and their software support is very limited, but Pixel 3 has support with the latest Android 11, which will always have the latest security patches etc. Would appreciate any good recommendations for devices. For price, I don't really consider that as I'll be looking at used phones from eBay. I have found a few Pixel 3 right now for around 30$ - 50$ so I can probably find the same thing for other devices as well.

Satellite Dishes in Malaysia

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if we could buy 150cm satellite dishes in Malaysia? As I'm trying to tune in to 100.5‘ Asiasat 5, and from my location, most of the location requires at least a 150cm or 59.1 inches of Antenna with C band. So far I can't find any places that sells it, at most is 120cm locally. I don't mind any chinese websites link, as long as it has what I'm looking for. And is there any legality issues with installing our own satellite dishes in Malaysia? Thanks for the replies in advance.

TM IP ranges

Hi everyone,

Recently I have just moved out of my apartment and back home, hence losing my Time connection. Here's the question I have, as I have servers around with limited IP range access, i need to know my IP range to be able to access as using login info is kinda annoying. For my Time broadband, I know that the IP range is about 202.184.0.0/16 - 202.186.0.0/16. Which I only assumed TM had the same system, but who knows overnight, the IP range changed from 115.135.x.x to 175.140.x.x, which is.. kinda a huge leap if you ask me, and not to mention my router didn't even restart once. How do I accurately pin point my IP range in here? As the TP-Link Archer VR1200v has no clear indication of what my IP range is.. Would appreciate any answers given atm.

Korea IPTV Beta Access

Hi all,

I'm here today to provide a beta Korea IPTV streaming service. I will only limit to 5 users at the moment as I will be trying this domestically, to test out the functionality.

Has all the channels you can think from Korea TV channels, even UHD channels, but UHD is in testing and I might only let 1-2 users have special access. Since the RAW is in HEVC codec, you will need newer hardware to try and stream from it. But all other channels will be in HD, H264 bitrate, a minimum speed of 100MBPS is recommended as one single stream can take up to 1.3MB/s max of internet quota. And to not congest your internet traffic, there might be transcoding but it will be testing furthers.

Please view attachment below for the full channel list, there will be a few unavailable channels due to encryption from Korea side. But generally all big channels are all available.

You can view the channel with PLEX/KODI, if you please, but it will be completely depending on you, you can even view it with VLC on PC.

Please DM for access, first come first serve basis.

LG G8 ThinQ in Malaysia?

Hi everyone,

Just asking but is anyone here using a LG G8 in Malaysia? And if so, how did you get it imported? Does it have any bands that doesn't comply with local band standards? As I just imported an LG G8 from the US for cheap recently but got tahan by SIRIM, presumably they opened the package since I previously imported a Galaxy S8 Plus a iPhone 6 and a Korea LG V30 with no issues what so ever. Now just waiting on SIRIM clearance since it's being tahan at KLIA atm. And I heard there will be a tax that is given to the consignee right? How many percentage will take from the total price of the phone?

It's just the phone, no accessories what so ever. And it's an USA AT&T Variant.

https://www.gsmarena.com/lg_g8_thinq-9540.php
