Hi all,

Hopefully this would be the correct thread for posting my question.

i am currently bring asked about to purchase 1 24 port switch or 8 ports switch as 8 port switches is much cheaper even when purchase 3x8 ports to achieve 1 24 ports switch functions.

i am now in a dillema if there is a firm reason to stay with purchasing 24 ports switches and i would like to see all professionals help regarding this as my suggestion will be taken into a consideration to purchase these device and install to company server room.

here are my doubts in shorts:

1. between 8 ports and 24 ports switch, is there any reliability issues when used in a company server room?
2. 3 unit of 8 ports is way cheaper than 1 24 unit switch (assuming we want manageable switch ). why still go for 24 ports?

Problem details
First occurence of problem: few weeks back
Problem frequency: few times a day
Problem description: Unstable DSL

Dear All,

i would like to seek advise on both of the mentioned modems as i am experiencing unstable DSL problems and the technician is happy to change it for free, but i am reluctant to do so as it is a solid modem which has been serving me since 2004. without anything to prove its malfunction, i would prefer to keep using it till it is officially dead.

however the TM technician is offering me a 1 to 1 replacement for the modem to this Dlink DSL-2640B ADSL2/2+. i am not sure if it is a good one. Can anyone kind enough to share your experience with both of these modems ?

hi all,

its nearly 5 months on my first job and if all goes smoothly, i believe i will be confirmed soon, however based on my colleague, the company will ask how much would i want if i were to be a permanent staff, this would be a tricky for me as i am still fresh in working environment.

i am currently working as technical executive in a factory and the job scope covers on internal support, system admin, hardware technical support, database/ application/ dhcp/ email/ domain server etc etc.

my current salary is nearly 2k in penang.

my parent advice me to ask for 20% raise from my current salary but i wonder if i it would be too much to ask.
please do give some advise on how much should i ask if i were to answer them.

Dear all

it has been few weeks since i got my job as IT executive in one of the factory in penang. since i am major in software development /management , i cannot help it but keep hearing people around me saying my current job have no future, etc , work as programmer is better ...

i may be taking my course in software development ,but i love to work with computer hardwares , troubleshooting , networking etc.
my question is, is it true that working as IT executive really that "low level" as some say? .... i keep hearing friends around saying even form 5 student can work as IT support etc .... im getting concern as i might not have better future, although its my interest .

Nuisance call

i have been getting complaints from my parents that they are receiving "silent" nuisance call for the pass few weeks .
as we are not using any caller ID phone or DECT phone , we cant be sure who "IT" is/was.
i am thinking of taking some action towards those pranks (chickens) , and i would like to ask for opinions and suggestions from you guys.

im currently thinking of getting a phone that will shows caller's ID , but is there anything to be done other than getting a caller ID phone? (like apply at TM etc ??)
once i have the phone to show caller ID , will i be able to lodge report to the police by providing the authority the caller as prove?

we have been thinking of changing phone number , but i somehow think it is just a little bit "chicken" way by avoiding the problem rather than solve it once and for all.

any advise are welcome and thank for the help and suggestion.

hi , i am not sure if this would be the appropriate thread to past, but if it is wrong , moderators please move it to the appropriate section .

i am asking on behalf of my friend as he is now sole beneficiary of one of the family member's will.
the professional will writing company said will arrange a lawyer to meet with my friend , and the estimated cost would be around RM3k .

since the relatives is in penang, can any1 suggest if the charge is acceptable or its too expensive.

i was told that the lawyer said the charge is based upon the deceased's number of bank accounts and property, meaning more = higher charges.

hi all , i have a question to ask and hope to get some opinion from u guys as i think my mother has been cheated by some pest control company that suddenly in front of door step .

this morning when i was in bed 3 guys knock our door and said something which make my sister and mother think they are from a GOV dept. my mother thought they going to ask if there is a aedes prevention or there will be a treatment so they talked to these guys. i was still on the bed and didnt get exactly what they talked to my mother .

by the time i woke up , i was handed by a receipt of rm 30 charged with the signature of my sister . i know its already too late even if they really from the gov health dept.

so i wish to ask here , i this consider a cheat ?? it is funny that the receipt stated they have 3 separate branch from penang ,perak and selangor . but only have one handphone number as their official contact .

ati radeon catalyst

hi, as stated above i just bought an ati radeon 4670 to replace my nvidia 6600 graphic card and to my surprise i am unable to play cs 1.6 (especially zombie mod ) . the fps is very unstable which can be as high at 100 and drop until 10 which will cause lags when im playing . i have no such problem when using my old 6600 . i have searched through the web and found that the "new: beta ccc 8.11 will fix it , however still didnt do the trick , so im seeking help here if anyone having the same problem and have found solutions for this issue.
btw when i search through the web i found that CCC hates opengl? is that true?

hope whoever know can help me and others who face the problem

ps: if too high setting and too many player in server cause this problem , i dont this its possible as this new card can handle more than this old engine even my 6600 can handle well under high configurations , i wont be buying this card if it cant even handle and old game lol

local disk transfer rate

hi guys , i need some help regarding file transfer within local hard disk of my desktop pc

well i have2 harddisk which is 320Gb sata and 500Gb sata both 7200rpm and 16 mb cache

im currently transferring around 30 gb of folders from 320 gb harddisk to 500 harddisk and its taking me about 180 minutes to transfer

is there anyway i can increase the transfer rate ? or its there something wrong with my pc setting etc? i have disable all security programs such as anti spyware virus network guard etc and it seems dosnt help much

its been 1 hour n a half before the time im posting this and its still transferring like turtle speed

hope any expert can help out or clarify if it is normal
