Honda said the information was not announced by the company and there was nothing else it could add. GAC and Dongfeng did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Japanese magazine Toyo Keizai reported earlier on Friday that Honda planned to shut down both plants.

Honda has six vehicle plants through the two JVs in China. Both JVs have two internal combustion engine (ICE) plants with output capacity of 240,000 cars a year each as well as a smaller EV facility.

Closing one ICE plant at each JV would halve Honda's production capacity in China to about 480,000 petrol-powered cars a year from 960,000 ‌and cut ⁠its total annual capacity to roughly 720,000 vehicles from 1.2 million.

ROADER RESTRUCTURING
The pullback follows Honda's announcement last month that it was writing down the value of its China business as part of a broader overhaul of its EV strategy that includes up to $15.7 billion in restructuring costs.

The charges are expected to lead the automaker to its first annual loss in nearly 70 years as a listed company.

Honda has struggled in China to compete with electric, software-driven cars made by ⁠rivals such as BYD.

Its sales in the country fell about 24% in 2025 from a year earlier to just under 647,000 vehicles. That left its sales at nearly half of the more than 1.2 million cars it sold in China in 2023.

Honda had already lowered its annual production capacity in China from ⁠1.49 million to 1.2 million over the past years.

One of the two people said Honda's EV plants in Guangzhou and Wuhan would begin producing EVs and plug-in hybrids developed under the leadership of its Chinese JV partners from 2028 or later.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have issued an urgent warning urging the public to avoid four specific brands of wet wipes after testing found they contained a potentially fatal bacterium.

These brands have been linked to 62 reported illnesses and six deaths across the UK. Members of the public have been advised not to use four specified non-sterile alcohol-free wipe products under any circumstances, owing to an ongoing infection risk associated with their use, reports the Mirror.

In a recent post on X published today (March 12), the UKHSA stated: "Burkholderia found in certain wipes. #Burkholderia is a bacteria that rarely causes harm in healthy people but sometimes causes serious infections, particularly for those with certain medical conditions or managing IV lines at home."

The agency added: "If you own any of these eipes, we remind you to stop using them. These products should not be used, please check your first aid kits and if you find any, dispose of them."

During outbreak investigations in 2025, the following products were found to be contaminated with Burkholderia. These four products should not be used under any circumstances:

There have been 59 confirmed cases of Burkholderia stabilis linked to certain non-sterile alcohol-free wipe products. This was identified during an outbreak in the United Kingdom that began in January 2018 and continued until February 3, 2026.

A small number of cases continue to be identified. Some of these cases have been severe, requiring hospital treatment, and one death has been linked to Burkholderia stabilis infection.

Burkholderia stabilis is a naturally occurring bacterium that typically does not cause illness in healthy individuals. The risk of infection remains very low for most people.

However, those with compromised immune systems, individuals with underlying health conditions such as cystic fibrosis, and patients with intravenous lines at home face a greater risk of infection. To date, there has been no evidence of the bacteria being transmitted between people.

The MHRA issued notices to retailers in July 2025, prompting the withdrawal of these products from sale. However, some of these items may still be present in first-aid kits and households.

People are urged to check their homes for these wipes, particularly in first-aid kits. Anyone in possession of any of the affected products should cease using them immediately and dispose of them in their regular household waste.

Dr Alison Cave, MHRA Chief Safety Officer, said: "Patient safety is the MHRA’s top priority. The MHRA issued notices to sellers of specific products in July, resulting in their withdrawal from sale. If you have any wipes at home or work, double check they are labelled ‘sterile’ before using on broken skin. Follow the advice of your clinical team, GP or community nurse in the care of your intravenous line."

Symptoms can vary depending on the site and severity of infection. But they can include the following:

Symptoms of a wound infection can include redness, swelling, increased pain, warmth around a wound or break in skin, and pus or other drainage from the wound/break in skin.

In more serious cases, symptoms are associated with bloodstream infection (sepsis). Sepsis has many possible symptoms, including confusion, a rash, and difficulty breathing.

If you have concerns about a wound that is not healing properly or you develop a fever after an injury, the UKHSA advises you to "contact NHS 111 immediately". If you have an intravenous line and have any concerns you should contact your care team.
