Need advice on Firewall setup

Hi network security expert aka. sifu sifu out there,

I need some explanation on what is the pros & con on setting up firewall in such a way.

Recently my office replace a fortigate unit.
Vendor come in & setup in such a way.

BTU(Huawei) -- Router (Dlink DIR842) -- Fortigate (Fortigate100) -- Switch (HP)
BTU (LAN port 1) connect to Router (WAN port), Router (LAN port 3) connect to Fortigate (WAN port), Fortigate (LAN port 1) connect to HP floow switch.

Can anyone tell me what is the function the Fortigate device act in this setting.
To my understanding, Dlink router is doing the routing work.
Fortigate is doing the firewall & filter work. (Correct me if i am wrong)

What is the pros & cons under this setting?

What is your advice?
