KUALA LUMPUR :
Ekonomi Malaysia tumbuh 3.6 peratus pada suku keempat 2019 sekali gus menjadikan ia pertumbuhan paling lemah sejak akhir 2009.

Menurut pengumuman yang dibuat oleh Gabenor Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunos, pertumbuhan itu kekal dipacu oleh perbelanjaan sektor swasta yang lebih tinggi pada kadar 7.4 peratus.

Sementara bagi tahun penuh 2019, ekonomi negara tumbuh 4.3 peratus berbanding 4.7 peratus pertumbuhan yang direkodkan pada 2018.

Penggunaan swasta meningkat dengan kukuh sebanyak 8.1 peratus pada suku keempat manakala pelaburan swasta mencatatkan pertumbuhan yang lebih tinggi iaitu sebanyak 4.2 peratus.

WHO warned Malaysia of possible wider transmission

PETALING JAYA: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned Malaysia and other countries that it is time to prepare for the possibility of wider transmission of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19).

WHO regional western Pacific director Dr Takeshi Kasai said the disease was at a “critical juncture”.

“While we must continue efforts to contain its spread, it is also time that all countries, including Malaysia, prepare for the possibility of wider transmission.

“There are now reports of clusters of cases with no apparent link to China. The latest information suggests that the virus may be more transmissible than early data suggested.

“This does not mean that the virus will start spreading easily within Malaysia or elsewhere tomorrow, or perhaps ever – of course, we hope that it won't, ” he said in a statement Wednesday (Feb 12).

Dr Kasai said that while countries work hard to contain the virus, there should be preparedness in case it spreads more widely.

He said responding to wider transmission would require shifting the focus of efforts to protect the vulnerable and minimise health and social impacts.

He said that in the example of wider community transmission, there was a need to ensure health facilities could focus on treating the most vulnerable and severe cases.

“This may mean planning to switch away from medically isolating or quarantining everyone who is infected, to encouraging people with mild illness to stay at home to recover – so that healthcare facilities do not become overwhelmed.

“Steps must also be taken to ensure health facilities do not become places that amplify the virus' spread, infecting staff and other patients, ” he said.

Dr Kasai added that we have to be ready to make a switch away from testing all suspected cases and tracing the contacts of every person who has the virus, to instead applying limited testing capacity to monitor geographical spread and trends, then using this information to inform decisions about the most appropriate public health response.

He also said there was a need to consider the possibility of closing schools or postponing mass gatherings, if necessary, to reduce opportunities for the virus to spread.

“I understand why people are worried, as this is a new disease and there is much we still don't know.

“The best thing we can do is to be prepared.

“In addition to those measures governments can take, we all share a collective responsibility to take simple measures to protect not just ourselves as individuals, but our communities, including the most vulnerable, ” he said.

Dr Kasai said of all cases reported in China to date, around 2% of people have died while outside of Hubei province, the death rate among those infected is around 0.4%.

PETALING JAYA: It is not worth Pakatan Harapan’s time to discuss PAS’ plan to table a motion of confidence when the august House convenes next month, says PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic).

There has never been any precedent of such motion in the history of the country and there is no basis for such discussions, he said.

Anwar added that the move was a political ploy to divide the Pakatan-led government.

“That is PAS. That is their motion. We do not take it as a serious matter.

“It is only an effort to divide and it will fail.

“They failed in the general election, and this is their strategy, ” he told reporters after meeting with British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab.

It was reported that PAS will table a vote of confidence in Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership in the Dewan Rakyat next month.

According to party deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, the move was a unanimous decision by the party’s central leadership council.

Tuan Ibrahim said PAS wanted the bickering on whether Dr Mahathir had the confidence of the august House to stop once and for all.

Anwar, who is the Port Dickson MP, chided PAS for its sudden support for Dr Mahathir.

“They can criticise the person in a maximum way but now they have given their maximum support, ” he added.

Several Pakatan leaders have slammed the move, saying that such move was futile as Dr Mahathir already had majority support among lawmakers.

PETALING JAYA: The suggestion to table a vote of confidence for Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic) in the next Parliament meeting will be presented when Umno and PAS leaders hold their collaboration meeting.

PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the idea to call for the vote of confidence would be put to its fellow opposition party to persuade Umno to support it.

“We will be meeting them tomorrow night (tonight) and this is one item on our agenda.

“We have mentioned before that we support Dr Mahathir if there is a vote of no confidence against him in the Dewan Rakyat.

“This time, we are mooting a vote of confidence which we will file earlier to the Speaker, ” said Tuan Ibrahim yesterday.

When asked if PAS would continue to moot the vote of confidence even if Umno says no, the Kubang Kerian MP merely said that PAS had a right to call for such a vote.

Tuan Ibrahim also said that the meeting would take place at the Umno headquarters in Putra World Trade Centre and both parties would be represented by 11 leaders each.

“Party secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan and I will be among the 11 from PAS, ” said Tuan Ibrahim.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad must keep his promise to hand over the country's leadership to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim although the final decision lies with the Dewan Rakyat, says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (pic).

"Yes, a promise is a promise. That is what is in the (Federal) Constitution.

"The Prime Minister will get the majority of the support (in the Dewan Rakyat)," the Deputy Prime Minister said after attending a Chinese New Year programme organised by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association on Sunday (Feb 9).
