KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has spoken out against India's recently-approved citizenship legislation, which appears discriminatory towards Muslims.

"I am sorry to see that India, which claims to be a secular state, is now taking action to deprive some Muslims of their citizenship.

"If we do that here, you know what will happen. There will be chaos, there will be instability and everyone will suffer.

"Already people are dying because of this law, so why is there a necessity to do this when all this while, for 70 years almost, they have lived together as citizens without any problems," he told reporters after visiting the media centre at the Kuala Lumpur Summit on Friday (Dec 20).

India's parliament recently passed a law which offers citizenship to migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan - but not if they are Muslims.

Texchem Resources Bhd will close down unprofitable Sushi King outlets in the country in 2020.

Group executive chairman Tan Sri Fumihiko Konishi told StarBz that the unprofitable outlets were mainly located in shopping malls that imposed high rentals.

“We plan to shut the one in KLCC because of the high rentals. The outlets in the rural areas are making profits because of the low rentals, ” he said.

There are 137 Sushi King restaurants in the country, which includes 25 outlets in Sabah and Sarawak.

According to Konishi, consumer spending at Sushi King outlets has dropped because of the economic uncertainties.

“The people prefer to eat at hawker centres where there are no sales and service tax, ” he said.

Konishi said the group would not plan a huge budget for its operations next year.

“We want to spend less money, stay cautious and reduce headcount through a rationalisation plan, ” he said, adding that the group employed over 6,000 workers.

Konishi added that the group would also control its inventories and shorten the period of credit to control trade receivables.

“The group is still healthy as it is able to generate between RM30mil and RM40mil in cash annually from all its business divisions.

“We have been doing that for 26 years, ” he added.

Konishi added that the group’s industrial and polymer engineering divisions were hit by the US-China trade war.

“Our customers have delayed orders due to the conflict between the US and China. The food division is the only one expected to generate a small profit this year. We will allocate RM10mil to expand the umber of barramundi fish farms in Myanmar, ” he said.

For the nine months of the 2019 financial year ended Sept 30, the group posted a RM6mil after-tax loss on the back of a RM844.5mil turnover.

According to the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index Q2 2019, produced in collaboration with Nielsen, recessionary sentiment in Malaysia remained high in second-quarter 2019, with 70% of consumers believing that the country is currently in a recession – in line with 69% in the preceding quarter.

“Among those who think the country is in a recession, more than a third (38%) are optimistic about an economic recovery in the next 12 months, ” the report says.

The report added that in the second quarter 2019, a vast majority of consumers (87%) said that they have adjusted their spending habits to save on household expenses.

“They save by spending less on new clothes (48%), trying to save on gas and electricity (44%), switching to cheaper grocery brands (43%), cutting down on out-of-home entertainment (42%) and reducing holidays and short breaks (36%), ” the report added.

A MALAYSIAN student at the University of Pennsylvania has been awarded the reputable Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford.

Nurul Ezzaty Hasbullah, 23 will be pursuing a Master’s in social data science followed by a Master’s in public policy starting next year.

Established in 1903, the Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest international scholarship programme in the world, aiming to develop future leaders through postgraduate studies at the premier university. To date, only five Malaysian students have received the scholarship.

Hailing from Kota Damansara, Selangor, Nurul Ezzaty is currently completing a degree in health and societies majoring in global health at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Arts and Sciences.

She has a strong passion for public policy, gender and healthcare.

“In my own experience growing up as a woman in Malaysia, I have always felt like women are placed and treated as second to men.

“This manifested in the smallest experiences, from my sister’s inability to be the class monitor because her teacher said that it’s only for boys, to the largest - my own experience as a sexual assault survivor who faced severe hurdles to get justice until today.

“For the longest time, I thought that is just how the world works. It wasn’t until I came to the United States and saw the powerful calls for gender equality that I felt truly empowered to challenge the faulty gender status quo in Malaysia.

“I dream of a future where no Malaysian woman would have to go through the same trauma that I did and that all of us can live in a society where we are treated as equals,” said Nurul Ezzaty.

Through education, the 23-year-old came to discover the importance of policy making.

“Public policy is truly a powerful mechanism to implement structural change that could leave a personal impact. If we want to create a fairer society for all regardless of gender, class, race, or religion, policies that promote this need to be put in place.”

Nurul Ezzaty believes that the Rhodes Scholarship will serve as a great platform to give back to the society.

China Company CCCG, launches first project!

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 25): China-based China Communications Construction Group (CCCG) and joint venture partner WCT Holdings Bhd has launched Core Residence @ TRX in Kuala Lumpur today.

Being developed under joint venture company Core Precious Development Sdn Bhd, the project is CCCG's first property development in Malaysia.

Located on a 1.65-plot at the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) development, Core Residence is a high-end freehold project with a gross development value of RM1.4 billion.

It comprises 700 serviced residences within three blocks. Built-up sizes range from 624 sq ft to 1,022 sq ft while the average selling price is RM2,200 psf.

The 50-storey project features an infinity pool, air gym, indoor playroom, outdoor lounge and a central park on level 7.

“Conveniently located in the heart of the city centre, at the intersection of Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Tun Razak, Core Residence enjoys ultimate accessibility with the integration of transportation services and access to multiple highways, and provides seamless connectivity with prime facilities nearby in retail, entertainment, education, healthcare and so on,” said Core Precious chairman and managing director Zhang Bao at the launch event.

Also present were TRX City Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Tan Hwa Min, WCT Holdings Bhd deputy managing director Goh Chin Liang and CCCG Real Estate Group vice president and CCCG Overseas Real Estate chairman Sui Zhenhai.

The project is slated for completion in 2023 with handover in 2024. Zhang says it targets to fully sell the project by 2022.

“We are targeting international buyers as TRX is going to be the new financial hub of Kuala Lumpur. We are working with some real estate agencies to bring in buyers from Singapore, Japan, China, just to name a few,” said Zhang.

TRX is an integrated 70-acre development touted as Malaysia’s International Financial District. The master developer, TRX City Sdn Bhd is wholly owned by the Malaysian Ministry of Finance and serves as a strategic development company.

According to Zhang, CCCG will continue to develop its real estate business in Malaysia.

“We have a few land banks in Malaysia. At the same time, we are talking to a few local partners for potential joint venture developments. We will be focusing on Kuala Lumpur and hopefully by next year, we will be able to announce our new developments," he shared.

CCCG has been in the Malaysian market for 20 years, focusing on infrastructure construction. It is the builder of the Penang Second Bridge and the East Coast Rail Link.

Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Peter Umbuas (pi) said police are investigating the case from all angles, but neither confirmed nor denied receiving a copy of the video.
