Retail management

So I recently got a retail assistant position at a small chain thanks to a friends recommendation. What I had in mind was to do some retail work for experience and then use that to stepping stone but I feel like there are some skills that retail work wont teach me that would be important to someone higher up.
Current goal is to gain the experience needed to take over some responsibilities at the family business.

Is it worth doing retail work first? My parents said most people get promoted based on their skills within the company within 3 months to 2 years.
What are some important things to learn related to retail management? How much of must be learnt on the job?
