It is often said that the study of medicine and dentistry requires strong academic foundation. As linguistically challenging fields of study where Latin terminology peppers the students’ vocabulary, the journey to becoming a doctor or dentist is indeed not an easy one.

In 2020, Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM), formerly known as Melaka-Manipal Medical College, made the bold decision to honour high calibre future doctors and dentists in their pursuit of their MBBS or BDS by introducing the MMMC Scholarship Awards. A total value of RM 1.5 million in tuition fee scholarships awaits Malaysian citizens wishing to pursue their MBBS or BDS with the College.

“It is a recognition of a student’s achievements, academic and non-academic prior to the start of their degree,” said Prof. Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of MUCM.

Twenty-seven MBBS and BDS in-coming students were awarded with scholarships ranging from RM 172,500 to RM 10,000. For Joanne Francis Xavier of Penang, winning the BDS College Scholar award is a blessing towards financing her degree and obtaining the education necessary to improve the lives of the people that she’ll work on as a dentist in the future. She said, “MUCM is consistently recognized for its excellence in education and I will get to know how the real dentistry world works and gain first-hand experience through interaction with the patients and staff.”

The selection process for these scholars with a specially convened panel was gruelling. While academic prowess was merely an eligibility criterion in this process, these scholars had to demonstrate that they are indeed all-rounders in their academics and co-curricular activities. They also impressed the panel with their skills as eloquent communicators and lateral thinkers.

MBBS College Scholar, Tharmaraj a/l Vallaiathamlingam who hails from Seremban, said, “This provides me greater incentive to excel in my medical studies at MUCM. It has also made me realise and appreciate the value of education more.” Tharmaraj, who is also a student from the Foundation in Science programme added, “The scholarship, for me, is not the end but just the beginning. Receiving the scholarship is not just receiving money for me; it tells me I have potential to deliver much for the future of our society.”

Tharmaraj’s sentiments of the future echoes the ambitions of the MUCM Scholarship. “MUCM scholars are expected to be the best of the best for their intake. With that, comes the expectations that they will continue to shine in their journey as an undergraduate student and beyond in their careers as doctors and dentists,” said Prof. Dr Jaspal.

For P’ng Xiu Hui of Selangor, claiming the coveted College Scholar award strengthens her goals and dreams of one day becoming an outstanding surgeon. “I hope to be exemplary in all that I do and contribute to the community and society in the future,” she said.

The MUCM Degree Scholarship is available yearly for MBBS and BDS programmes. The scholarship application closes 3 months prior to intake commencement.

KUALA LUMPUR: The private and public healthcare sectors should one day form a single cohesive system rather than operating separately, according to the Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia (APHM).

While the private and public sectors work together in certain cases, such as government hospitals outsourcing some non-Covid-19 cases to private hospitals during the pandemic, APHM president Dr Kuljit Singh said the idea of “partnership” should one day become a thing of the past.

“The system should work in such a way that the partnership is no longer a partnership, but one holistic healthcare system,” he said at the “Future Hospital” forum here today.

He said there would come a time, though not in the immediate future, when the government would only act as a regulator and take care of public health – such as dealing with pandemics and health campaigns – while the private sector would take over the operation of all hospitals and clinics.

“All clinical treatments should be privately managed, because you can contain costs, and give better care to patients,” he said.

Payments could then come from a national insurance scheme, similar to that seen in some Western countries or a system where costs are split with the government.

“Of course, there should also be some social support for those who cannot afford treatment, and this is where the government can intervene.”

Kuljit envisions this model being adopted around the world, as the “dichotomy” between the private and public sectors is unsustainable.

The Public Service Department, in a statement, said the scholarship would be divided equally for Masters and doctorate levels, for studies in science and technology, economics, law, and Islamic finance.

The scholarship application which opens today at 5pm, is applicable for students seeking to further their studies at local or overseas universities approved by PSD according to the courses.

"The application can be made by filling in the form online at the http://esilav2.jpa.gov.my portal.

"The application form and supporting documents must be submitted to PSD representatives by hand or post before or on April 9," the statement read.

It added that priority would be given to candidates who have exceptional skills such as mastery in several languages and are active in extra co-curricular activities or community activities.

"Those who have produced creative and innovative works such as in writing; art design; technology and, others will also be given priority," it said.

Other requirements included outstanding academic results who have secured a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 3.75 or first class or equivalent at the Degree or Masters level.

"All applicants must be Malaysian citizens and aged below 35 years old on Jan 1, 2021.

"The applicants must have received a full time offer to study or have started their full -time studies in the year of the offer at an institution of higher learning listed by the JPA according to the field of study.

"For Masters level, applicants must be on research mode only which requires the preparation of a research paper or dissertation or thesis," it said.

KOTA KINABALU: Seorang ibu merayu orang ramai menderma darah untuk membantu anaknya yang menghidap Talasemia.

Selly Onong berkata, kesukaran mendapatkan bekalan darah jenis “O positif R1R1 JKA” menyebabkan proses pemindahan darah Neowell Van Houttan, 20, terpaksa ditangguhkan bulan ini.

“Pandemik Covid-19 turut menyebabkan proses pemindahan darah anak saya terjejas sehingga mengakibatkan dia bertambah lemah.

“Memandangkan dia adalah orang kelainan upaya ‘Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder’ (ADHD), saya agak risau sekiranya proses pemindahan darahnya lambat dilakukan setiap bulan,” katanya ketika dihubungi.

Beliau berkata, kali terakhir anaknya menjalani pemindahan darah pada 19 Jan lalu dan Neowell sepatutnya berbuat demikian 5 Feb lalu.

Selly berkata, anaknya dikesan menghidap “Talasemia major” ketika berusia empat tahun dan sejak itu, beliau perlu menjalani pemindahan darah setiap bulan.

Katanya, ada kalanya Neowell terpaksa menunggu bekalan darah dari Pusat Darah Negara di Kuala Lumpur disebabkan kesukaran mendapatkan darah sepadan.

“Jika darah yang diterima tidak sesuai dengan Neowell, badannya akan mula beruam dan bengkak. Atas sebab itu, dia betul-betul perlukan darah yang sama, iaitu ‘O positif R1R1 JKA’.

“Saya tidak mahu hanya terus menunggu bekalan darah dari hospital, saya perlu berusaha merayu penderma darah untuk tampil agar proses pemindahan darah anak saya dapat dilakukan secepatnya.

“Rayuan saya ini bukan hanya untuk anak saya saja, tetapi juga anak-anak lain yang turut menghidap Talasemia dan perlu melakukan pemindahan darah setiap bulan.”

Beliau berkata, sebelum ini ada penderma darah tetap, namun ada kalanya jenis darah yang diterima tidak sepadan.

Mereka yang mempunyai darah sepadan dan ingin menderma kepada Neowell ke Hospital Queen Elizabeth 1 atau hubungi Selly di talian 014-7357915.
