Putin: Russia is ready to use nuclear weapoms

Moscow is ready to use nuclear weapons if there is a threat to the existence of the Russian state but “there has never been such a need,” President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with state media published Wednesday.

The Russian leader made the comments to Rossiya 1 and RIA Novosti ahead of presidential elections on March 15, in which he is widely expected to sail through to a fifth term in office, and as his full-scale war in Ukraine grinds into a third year.

Putin said that from a military and technical standpoint, Russia is ready for a nuclear war, though he didn’t say one was imminent.

He warned that if US troops were deployed to Ukraine, Russia would treat them as interventionists.

“Apart from (US President Joe) Biden, there are enough other experts in the sphere of Russian-American relations and strategic restraint. So I don’t think that everything is going to go head-on here, but we are ready for it,” Putin said.

Putin said the United States is also developing nuclear forces but that doesn’t mean they are ready to “launch a nuclear war tomorrow.”

“They are now setting tasks to increase this modernity, innovation, they have a corresponding plan. We know about it too. They are developing all their components. So are we,” Putin said.

Participants of the mega rally in support of Palestine have started to gather in front of Menara Tabung Haji at Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur.

Prayers can be heard over a loudspeaker while participants mill around holding placards, waiting for the event to begin.

Stalls have also mushroomed up in the vicinity, selling Palestine-related merchandise such as shirts expressing support for the cause and fake keffiyehs.

There are also stalls selling food and cold drinks amid the hot weather this afternoon.

People are giving out small and large Palestine flags for participants to hold.

Norway’s King Harald hospitalised in Malaysia after falling ill

OSLO: Norway’s King Harald has been hospitalised in Malaysia for an infection, the Norwegian royal household said in a statement today.

The 87-year-old monarch had been on a private trip to the southeast Asian country.

“His majesty the king has fallen ill during his holiday stay in Malaysia, and is hospitalised there, with an infection.

The king receives good care from both Malaysian and Norwegian medical personnel,” the royal household said.

King Harald has been Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991 and is Europe’s oldest living monarch.

He has repeatedly been hospitalised with infections in recent years, and has also undergone heart surgery.

Crown Prince Haakon presides in his father’s absence.

Hamas finally admits 6,000 operatives were killed

A Hamas official based in Qatar tells the Reuters news agency that the group estimated it had lost 6,000 fighters during the four-month-old conflict, about half the 12,000 Israel says it has killed.

Hamas can keep fighting and is prepared for a long war in Rafah and Gaza, says the official, who requested anonymity.

“Netanyahu’s options are difficult and ours are too. He can occupy Gaza but Hamas is still standing and fighting. He hasn’t achieved his goals to kill the Hamas leadership or annihilate Hamas,” he adds.

The comments are a rare acknowledgment from the terror group that it has suffered significant losses in the Gaza fighting and appears to mark the first time that they have differentiated between combatants and civilians in a death toll from the fighting.

According to official figures from the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry 28,985 Palestinians have been killed in the war.

However, these figures cannot be independently verified, and are believed to include both civilians and Hamas members killed in Gaza, including as a consequence of terror groups’ own rocket misfires.

The IDF says it has killed nearly 12,000 operatives in Gaza, in addition to some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.

The IDF says 235 Israeli soldiers have been killed in the Gaza ground offensive.

US President Joe Biden is said to have called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “bad f*cking guy,” according to people who have spoken with the president and who were cited in a Politico report today.

The report cites White House officials on events surrounding Biden’s support for Israel in the war against Hamas and the political backlash with some in his party and among voters.

Politico reported that Biden has grown suspicious of Netanyahu as the war, triggered by Hamas’s October 7 massacre, enters its fifth month, and has privately called him a “bad f*cking guy.”

Andrew Bates, Biden’s spokesperson, told Politico “the president did not say that, nor would he,” noting the two leaders’ “decades-long relationship that is respectful in public and in private.”

China executes couple who threw two children

China has executed a couple for throwing two young children out of the window of an apartment building, in a case that caused nationwide outrage.

Zhang Bo and Ye Chengchen were previously found responsible for the fatal falls of the two-year-old girl and one-year-old boy from the 15th floor of a residential tower in Chongqing, south-west China.

Zhang, who was the father of the two children, had begun an affair with Ye, who was initially unaware he was married and had children.

She then urged Zhang to kill his two children, who she “regarded as obstacles” to them marrying and a “burden on their future life together”, the Chongqing No. 5 Intermediate People’s Court said in a statement.

In November 2020, Zhang threw his children out of the window of the apartment in the absence of their mother, with whom he had agreed to divorce.

Both were found guilty of conspiring “to kill his daughter and younger son by staging an accidental fall from the 15th floor of his apartment building”, the state-backed newspaper China Daily reported last year.

The couple were sentenced to death in December 2021 and executed on Wednesday, the court said.

‘Today is truly a good day’
The news came the same day as another high-profile execution. Wu Xieyu was found guilty of killing his mother by repeatedly striking her with a dumbbell in 2015, a statement by a court in eastern Fujian province said.

China keeps data on its use of the death penalty secret, although Amnesty International estimates that the country is the top executioner globally, with thousands executed and sentenced to death each year.

Sentences are frequently handed down for crimes ranging from drug trafficking to corruption and murder, with lethal injection the most common method of execution.

Zhang and Ye’s crime sent shock waves across China for its cold-blooded premeditation, as well as the age of the victims.

Their executions quickly rose to the top of a list of trending topics on the Chinese social media site Weibo on Wednesday, receiving nearly 200 million views.

“Today is truly a good day,” read one widely liked comment under a related post by the state news agency Xinhua.

“The punishment fits the crime,” wrote another.

UNRWA sacks 12 staffers who participated in the

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees said Friday it had sacked “several” employees accused by Israel of involvement in Hamas’s unprecedented October 7 attack on southern communities.

The accusation also prompted the United States to suspend critical funding to the organization.

The decision was taken “to protect the agency’s ability to deliver humanitarian assistance,” said UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini.

“Any UNRWA employee who was involved in acts of terror will be held accountable, including through criminal prosecution,” he said.

Israeli authorities had provided information about the staff members’ alleged involvement, he said.

A senior Israeli official told the Axios news site that the Shin Bet and the IDF provided information that pointed to the active participation of UNRWA staffers along with the use of the agency’s vehicles and facilities in the October 7 terror onslaught.

UN chief Antonio Guterres “is horrified” by the accusations and an “urgent and comprehensive independent review of UNRWA will be conducted,” said his spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

The US State Department said it was “extremely troubled” by the allegations and had “temporarily paused additional funding” while it reviewed the claims and the UN’s plan to address concerns.

Canada took similar measures Friday, halting funding to the organization and saying it was “deeply troubled by the allegations relating to some UNRWA employees.”

While the UNRWA statement did not specify how many staffers it had fired, the US statement revealed that 12 employees “may have been involved.”

The United States was the agency’s biggest bilateral donor in 2022, contributing more than $340 million, according to UNRWA’s website.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke Thursday with Guterres “to emphasize the necessity of a thorough and swift investigation of this matter,” the statement said.

Israel proposes pause in fighting as part

WASHINGTON: Israel has proposed to Hamas via Qatari and Egyptian mediators a pause in fighting of up to two months as part of a deal to free all the hostages being held in Gaza, the US news site Axios reported Monday.

The report, citing unnamed Israeli officials, said the deal would take place in multiple stages, the first of which would see the release of women, men over 60 and those in critical medical condition.

Subsequent phases would involve the release of women soldiers, younger civilian men, male soldiers and the bodies of dead hostages.

The officials said the deal would also see the release of an as yet undetermined number of Palestinian prisoners being held in Israel, but not all of them.

The proposal does not include promises to end the war, but it would involve Israeli troops reducing their presence in major cities in Gaza and gradually allowing residents to return to the territory’s devastated north.

The officials said the deal was expected to take around two months to implement.

PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES: The Hamas resistance group said today its Oct 7 attack on Israel was a “necessary step” against Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

But the group admitted in a 16-page report on the attacks that “some faults happened … due to the rapid collapse of the Israeli security and military system, and the chaos caused along the border areas with Gaza”.

The document was the group’s first public report released in English and Arabic justifying the attacks when they broke through Gaza’s militarised border.

Their attacks resulted in the deaths of about 1,140 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

The group said the attacks were “a necessary step and a normal response to confront all Israeli conspiracies against the Palestinian people”.

The rebels seized about 250 hostages during the attack.

Israel says around 132 remain in Gaza, of whom at least 27 captives are believed to have been killed, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

Israel’s relentless bombardment and ground offensive have killed at least 25,105 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

Hamas urged “the immediate halt of the Israeli aggression on Gaza, the crimes and ethnic cleansing committed against the entire Gaza population”.

And the group rejected any international and Israeli efforts to decide Gaza’s post-war future.

“We stress that the Palestinian people have the capacity to decide their future and to arrange their internal affairs,” the statement said, adding that “no party in the world” had the right to decide on their behalf.

Washington supports Israel’s campaign in Gaza, but despite otherwise close ties, the two allies publicly aired differences again this week over the way forward.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken used the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to renew his call for a “pathway to a Palestinian state”.

But Netanyahu again flatly rejected the suggestion yesterday.

“Israel must have security control over the entire territory west of the Jordan River,” he said. “This is a necessary condition, which contradicts the idea of (Palestinian) sovereignty.”

Netanyahu maintained that “a prime minister in Israel should be able to say no, even to our best friends”.

Washington believes that the creation and recognition of a viable Palestinian state is necessary to achieve security for Israel.

“We obviously see things differently,” national security council spokesman John Kirby said when asked about Netanyahu’s comments.
