SINGAPORE — After failing to hire a prostitute in Geylang because prices were too high, Patian Sohag saw a 53-year-old woman sleeping on a chair in a back alley and decided to repeatedly molest her.

When the victim — who works as a sex worker and had taken some drugs — did not respond to his request for sex, Patian decided to move her to a more secluded area to have sex with her anyway.

The victim only found out when she woke up the next morning and called the police.

Patian, 40, was on Friday (Sept 16) sentenced to three years and six months’ jail as well as three strokes of the cane. The Bangladeshi's sentence was backdated to March 6 last year when he was remanded.

He pleaded guilty to one count each of outraging the victim’s modesty and abducting her to force her to have sex with him.

Another charge of misappropriating her property was taken into consideration for sentencing.

Patian was originally charged with rape, but he did not face any rape charges on Friday. No details were given in open court as to why the charge was dropped.

VICTIM TOOK 'POWER PILLS'
The court heard that Patian, who had worked at a chemical plating factory here for the past 16 years, was drinking alcohol with some friends in the Bedok North area on Feb 28 last year. They then took a taxi to Geylang.

Deputy Public Prosecutors (DPPs) Delicia Tan and Phoebe Tan told the court that Patian intended to look for prostitutes there but could not find one because he felt the prices quoted were too high.

Patian’s friend then left because he had to work the next day, while Patian continued roaming the area in search of prostitutes.

As for the victim, a Singaporean who cannot be named due to a court order to protect her identity, she consumed some “power pills” that day at a coffee shop along Lorong 10 Geylang.

The court heard that these pills made her feel alert. Her blood and urine were later found to contain dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant, and nitrazepam, which is typically used as a sedative.

Both substances had side effects that included agitation, confusion, disorientation, dizziness, lethargy and sedation.

After meeting some friends along Lorong 20 Geylang, she dozed off while sitting on a chair at around 12.15am.

At around 3.20am, Patian spotted the victim in the chair, still asleep and alone.

First, he tried to wake her up by calling out to her.

Upon realising that she was deeply asleep, he molested her by touching her breasts and private parts under her clothes.

He then lifted her up from the chair and carried her away to a secluded area, which was surrounded by potted plants.

Closed-circuit television footage, which was played in court, showed Patian groping her and carrying her away. The video footage did not capture them at the area by the potted plants.

The prosecution told the court that Patian placed her on the ground, kissed her and had sex with her. He left the scene six minutes later.

About a minute later, the victim was seen staggering back to her original seat, where she dozed off after adjusting the belt buckle on her jeans.

After waking up later that morning, she felt a wet and sticky substance on her underwear and jeans. She then made a police report, stating that she was raped and her mobile phone was missing.

Patian was arrested about a week later on March 4. His sperm was later found on the victim’s vaginal swabs.

DEEPLY SORRY FOR ACTIONS
Prosecutors sought a jail term of between three years and four years and three months, along with three strokes of the cane.

They pointed to several aggravating factors that included the victim being unable to consent due to her state, Patian brazenly committing the offences in public, and him checking his surroundings several times to ensure no one else was around.

Mr Ashwin Ganapathy, who was assigned to represent Patian pro bono under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, asked for about three years’ jail with three strokes of the cane.

The defence lawyer told the court that Patian was “deeply sorry for his actions” and had vowed not to repeat his mistakes.

"The victim has suffered greatly and our client must be held accountable. He fully accepts the wickedness of his actions... and takes full responsibility," Mr Ganapathy added.

In sentencing Patian, District Judge Ronald Gwee commended Mr Ganapathy for his “very balanced and very fair approach”.

For molestation, Patian could have been jailed up to three years, fined, caned, or punished with any combination of the three.

For abducting the victim to compel her to have intercourse with him, he could have been jailed up to 10 years and caned or fined.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a husband and wife for public mischief and criminal intimidation.

The couple was caught on video damaging a car following a misunderstanding between two stall operators at the OUG morning market at Jalan Hujan Rahmat 2, Taman OUG here.

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Amihizam Abdul Shukor said they received a report about the incident at 8.51am on Saturday (Aug 27).

"A video of the incident has gone viral. The one-minute and 24-second long video shows individuals placing several baskets of vegetables on a car as well as throwing an umbrella on the vehicle.

"The incident allegedly caused the front windshield of the car to crack and scratch," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 29).

He said the incident was sparked by two stall operators fighting over a location to set up their stall.

"Police personnel were dispatched to the location and advised the individuals to lodge a police report.

"We have arrested a man and woman at around 1pm on the same day to assist further investigations," he said, adding that the case was being investigated as criminal intimidation and public mischief.

He urged those with information on the case to contact the Brickfields police hotline at 03-2297 9222 or the City police hotline at 03-2115 9999.

Just recently, volunteer worker May shared a story on Facebook saying that a man has eaten the dog he had initially agreed to adopt from her.

In an exclusive interview with WORLD OF BUZZ, May reveals that she used to help out with rehoming dogs at a Shell petrol station but because of the pandemic, she started to walk around with the puppies to see if anyone would like to adopt them.

One day, I stumbled across Mr. Lee (unsure if the given name is real or fake), he sells soy milk near Taman Connaught and when I approached him, he seemed to be very interested,” May recounted.

“I explained to him about adopting the dogs and he said he loves dogs. I asked if he stays at a landed property and he told me yes. He even told me to not worry as the dog will be well taken care of,” she said.

She then passed the dog to him and left. Yesterday (August 5), she stumbled across Mr Lee and asked about the dog’s condition.

“I asked him and he just laughed and said no more. I kept asking, and he eventually said that he eats dog meat,” she said.

She then took her phone out and pretended that she was listening, and proceeded to record him.

In the video she asked:

What happened to the dog? And he said that he gave the dog to his uncle and they slaughtered it and made stew. He said that they enjoyed the meal.”

“I asked him why didn’t he give the dog back to me if he didn’t want it and he said: “You gave me the dog, what I want to do with the dog is my business.””

“He said that he is from Guang Xi, China and they’re okay with eating dog meat,” she explained.

In the interview, May told WORLD OF BUZZ that she didn’t expect this to happen.

She said: “It’s my mistake that I forgot to ask him for his number, I would usually ask adopters for their numbers so they could update us on the condition of the dog.”

“They can also return the dog to me if they find that they’re unable to care for the dog, I just didn’t expect that this man will cook and eat the dog.”

When asked about what actions she had taken since the incident, May has said that after she recorded the video, she saw a policeman nearby and went to ask for some advice.

Unfortunately, the authorities couldn’t do much as there wasn’t enough proof. Her only hope is that she will be able to get justice for the poor dog through social media.

May has also told us that she will no longer help with rehoming dogs as this incident has dampened her spirit.

Now more than ever, the advertising and marketing of a business is crucial in playing a huge part in attracting potential customers, which could translate into sales and profits.

However, sometimes, it is best to review your advert and the themes around it before you present it to the world.

Recently, a local Japanese and sushi chain restaurant released an advert where they were promoting the launch of their first ever outlet in the Northern side of Peninsular Malaysia.

The video featured a local content creator along with a group of friends trying out the sushi. The content creator is then seen with sellotapes on the sides of his eyes to make it more slanted.

In one of the scenes, he was seen struggling with chopsticks to which he threw them away and used his hands to eat the pieces of sushi instead.

Called out for being offensive

The video has not gone down well with Malaysians who were quick to point out the lack of respect for Japanese food and culture.

Racist and offensive to no end. You sell Japanese food but you want to support such stupid influencers with stupid content. He even sellotaped his eyes to make it look slanted. Are you stupid? What kind of branding is this,” said a user.

Another listed out a few points on why the advert is so horrific and said, “This is such a racist and insensitive sushi advert.”

“The usage of the Japanese language is incorrect and playful. Why does he blurt out random brands.”

The advert also captured the attention of well known food reviewer Ceddy who said that even though the influencer has tons of followers, this isn’t the best way to promote the restaurant.

“No need to use cheap gimmicks. You sell Japanese food so be a bit more respectful with their culture, is there a need to make the slanted eyes in the video,” he asked.

A delivery worker in Singapore has discovered that his wife of 10 years has been having an affair while he was out working.

Youngest son was fathered by someone else
According to Sin Chew Daily, which cited Shin Min Daily News, 27-year-old Lin first found out about the affair his wife, 29, was having when he witnessed his wife hugging another man in May 2022.

Earlier in March, he had noticed that his wife was leaving their home early and returning late at night.

When he recalled that his youngest son, who's around 10 months old, has a different blood type from both him and his wife -- the doctor at the time had said it's not uncommon for kids to have a different blood type from their parents -- he decided to do a paternity test, under the encouragement of his relatives and friends.

The test revealed that he had no blood relations with his son.

"When I saw the report, I was devastated," he said.

Mother-in-law knew about the affair
In June, his domestic helper had also sent him a text while he was overseas.

She said a man had stayed overnight at their home, and even sent a photo of the said man lying on the bed in a state of undress. She also said she had already told his mother-in-law about the matter.

Lin subsequently called his mother-in-law, who admitted that she saw the man before, but "couldn't bear to let him know".
Lin's helper had apparently already suspected his wife of bringing a man home, and had conveyed her suspicions to Lin, but had not been able to take any picture proof as his wife had always locked the bedroom door.

"My helper has a husband and kids of her own too, and she thought that my wife shouldn't have done what she did, so she helped me (uncover the affair)," Lin said, adding that his helper had initially wanted to quit as she thought his home was too "messy".

She eventually agreed to stay for the time being after he sought to retain her as she was responsible and good at taking care of the children and managing household chores.

Willing to take care of all three kids
During a confrontation with his wife, his wife admitted that the child was not his, but said the child "had nothing to do" with the man whom she was cheating with.

Thinking that his wife was only saying hurtful things out of anger, he became angry and said he wanted to talk to the other man, but was stopped by his wife.

He later got wind that his wife's lover is in the armed forces, and said he even witnessed his wife bringing lunch for him at the military camp.

Lin said he's willing to take care of all three children after divorcing his wife, even though the youngest son is not fathered by him.

"He's not my flesh and blood, but I love him a lot. For the past month, I'm the one who have been taking care of him as my wife wasn't around much. It was me who fed him and coaxed him to sleep every night, so I'm really close to him," he said.

Wife asked for both house and kids
While Lin initially wanted to save his marriage, and refused to give in when his wife asked for a divorce, he later became disheartened when it appears that his wife was not willing to budge.

At first, his wife said they could split their property in half, and that he could have custody of their two older children. However, she later said she wanted not only the entire property, but also alimony, as well as child maintenance for all three children.

"I suspect it's her lover who influenced her into asking for these things," he said, adding that he would absolutely not leave the apartment and his children to his wife's lover.

Now, Lin said he's trying to look for a good lawyer as soon as possible to take on his case.

Leaves most of his salary to his wife
Lin starts work each day at 10am, and only knocks off at around 2am. He earns about S$6,000 to S$7,000 a month, and after handing S$5,000 over to his wife, would use the rest of the money on petrol, meals and cigarettes. Occasionally, he would splurge on some lottery tickets.

"My wife works in accountancy, so I leave it up to her to manage all household expenses, the housing mortgage and the car loan," he said.

"I love and trust her very much, and hand over almost all my earnings, without leaving much savings for myself."

Lin also said he spent more than S$80,000 on a second-hand seven-seater for his wife to ferry their kids to and from school as he wanted to lighten her workload.

To pay off the car loan, he only rests for one day a week, down from two days previously.

Still wants his wife to return to him
Although it appears that their relationship is broken without repair, Lin said if he could salvage the situation, he would want his wife to return to him, even if it's "for the sake of the children".

"She has complained that I work too much outside, and doesn't spend enough time with her, saying that having a husband is the same as not having one. But we have three kids and a mortgage to pay off. I said I want to give her and the kids a comfortable life, and thought she would be understanding, but things turned out this way."

Lin thinks he has treated his wife well, never hitting her nor having an affair.

When he asked what wrong had he done, she apparently simply said, "There's no communication left between us."

Flash forward to February of this year. Graduated awhile ago, have my degree, have a house, older car but pretty independent. More confident, bolder. Got a relatively stable job whose CEO wanted to start bringing everyone back in the office at least twice a week so that we know the faces of the coworkers we email and also for meetings. Fine. Whatever.

PETALING JAYA: The RM30.75 million contract for replacing 200 lamp posts in the Klang Valley must be explained in detail as it appears to be too costly, says the DAP.

Its public complaints bureau chairman Lim Lip Eng said there is a need for Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to be transparent and provide details of the work involved and the pricing.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the contract was awarded to Sarawak Consolidated Industries Berhad (SCIB) via Ennova Sdn Bhd.

“Paying RM30.75 million for just 200 lamp posts has raised some questions. People are asking if the contract is limited to merely installing them or does it involve other work too.

“Based on the total project price, the cost of replacing one lamp post comes to RM153,750. DBKL must clarify this,” the Kepong MP said.

Lim added that DBKL should also explain if the job was given out via an open tender, adding that the question of why it was given out via a third party, Ennova, should also be clarified.

“Why couldn’t DBKL award the contract directly to SCIB?” he said, of the contractor which is a public listed company.

“DBKL should not ignore these questions as integrity and transparency are vital for any contract that runs into the tens of millions.”

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Tuesday, SCIB said the contract is for project engineering services for the replacement of 200 units of lamp posts in Kuala Lumpur.

DBKL will not be forking out any money for a street lamp project claimed to cost a whopping RM30.7mil.

According to a DBKL spokesman, the project does not involve building any new street lamps, but will integrate additional features that support 5G telecommunication networks into existing ones.

"We will rent out the lamp posts to companies who will integrate it with telecommunication equipment and antennae for better connectivity," said the spokesman.

This was in response to a statement from DAP Kuala Lumpur complaints bureau chairman Lim Lip Eng on Saturday (June 11), who alleged that the project was too costly.

He said according to a report, the project involves 200 lamp posts to be built at a cost of RM30.75mil, which comes up to RM153,750 each.

The spokesman added that they had appointed several companies to maintain and operate these bi-functional lamp posts.

"We are involved with renting out the lamp posts. We are not spending money. Please wait for a proper statement from our corporate communications team," said the spokesman.

Berita Harian reported that a contract was awarded to Sarawak Consolidated Industries Berhad (SCIB) via Ennova Sdn Bhd to construct and operate 200 street lights in the Klang Valley for DBKL.

The project is set to start in June and end by May 2023.
