ISwitch, Singapore’s biggest independent electricity retailer and a potential foundation customer for Australia’s Sun Cable project, will fold its retail operation as the fallout from spiking energy prices expands in Asia.

The retailer, which put its hand up in 2019 as a likely customer for the $30 billion-plus solar export mega-project backed by tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes, has been hit hard by a surge in wholesale electricity prices that has also hit markets in the UK, Europe, China and India.

Electricity for the Sun Cable project would be generated from a massive solar farm near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory.

“Unfortunately, due to current electricity market conditions, we will be ceasing our electricity retail operations on 11 Nov 2021,” iSwitch said on its website. The company referred media inquiries to Singapore’s market regulator, the Energy Market Authority. The EMA is understood to be working on a statement.

David Griffin, chief executive of Sun Cable, said the crisis showed the value of the sort of stable, long-term prices that the proposed long-distance cable could offer for Singapore, and said the venture had several other options for customers in the island nation.

JAKARTA, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Natural gas supply to Singapore from Indonesia has not fully recovered from disruptions in July, an official at Singaporean oil and gas regulator SKK Migas told Reuters.

The city state's Energy Market Authority last week said disruptions in supply from Indonesia's gas fields in Natuna had contributed to a spike in its spot electricity prices.

"Gas distribution in September has started to improve, compared to July when there was production disruption, but it hasn't returned to normal as it was at the beginning of this year," Julius Wiratno, deputy of operation at SKK Migas said.

"This is due to decreasing gas production rate in one of the fields."

"We are working... to restore the well's performance and hopefully in November, West Natuna Transportation System producers will be able to supply gas in accordance to Singapore’s demand," Wiratno said.

Wiratno said at the moment, gas distribution is averaging 305 billion British thermal units per day.

The July disruptions were blamed mainly on an unplanned shutdown at the Anoa field and planned maintenance at the Gajah Baru field, both located in Natuna.

Production in Natuna is down 27.5% from its previous peak to 370 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), SKK Migas spokesman Rinto Pudyantoro said.

Output from Sumatra is around 360 MMSCFD versus a plateau in 2018 at 420 MMSCFD, Pudyantoro said.

It has been reported that four companies are vying for the lucrative tender to be issued by the Malaysian Army for 400 6×6 Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC). The companies mentioned were FNSS (Turkey) , PT PINDAD (Indonesia), General Dynamic Land System (Canada) and Hyundai Rotem (Korea Selatan).

FNSS is offering Pars 6×6 APC which will share many commonality with DEFTECH/FNSS AV-8 Gempita 8×8 Armoured Wheeled Vehicle in which 257 vehicles have been built locally at DEFTECH manufacturing campus at Pekan, Pahang.

PINDAD is offering a Malaysianised variant of its APS-3 Anoa called the Rimau. General Dynamic on the other hand will be pinning on its hugely popular and battle proven LAV 6×6 APC.

Another sstrong contender will be South Korea Rotem which had previously supplied 111 K200A1 MIFV to the Malaysian Army.

The K806 6×6 APC is designed to enhance the mobility and striking power of infantry over the slower K200 and K21 tracked vehicles, with the K806 is intended for mobile strike and reconnaissance missions in the rear.

Aroundc100 K806 have been ordered by the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) beginning from 2018. Representatives from the Malaysian Army have tested the vehicle in South Korea some time at the end of 2020.

Since 1984, the Army has operated 186 Sibmas 6×6 Armoured Fire Support Vehicle (AFSV) with Cockerell 90mm gun as well as specialised Sibmas 6×6 Armoured Recovery Vehicle (ARV) or Kembalik. There is also 460 Radpanzer Condor 4×4 APC with 36 of these being deployed to Lebanon to participate in the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission.

Of these, the Gempita replace almost a third of the vehicles while a separate tender to procure 4×4 APC is on going for the peacekeeping Condors.

Any of the successful bidders is required to establish local production to facilitate transfer of technologies as well as eases the flow of spare parts and components.

PUTRAJAYA: Tahap kekuatan pasukan bersenjata udara negara pada ketika ini sudah pun ‘dipintas’ oleh banyak negara miskin yang lain di seluruh Asia.

Tidak ketinggalan, Bangladesh yang dikritik antarabangsa kerana isu penempatan pelarian Rohingya, tetapi, pasukan bersenjata udaranya gah di posisi ke-23 di Asia dan ke-53 di dunia.

Asian Community menyenaraikan China masih unggul di benua ini dan di peringkat sejagat, diikuti India, Korea Selatan, Jepun, Pakistan, Korea Utara, Arab Saudi, Taiwan dan Thailand.

Sepuluh negara pula yang paling lemah pertahanan udaranya di Asia ialah Bhutan, disusuli Kyrgizstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Kemboja, Tajikistan, Laos, Lubnan, Turkmenistan dan Sri Lanka.

Kedudukan Malaysia yang agak sederhana itu secara tidak langsung mendedahkan kenapa pesawat tentera China mampu menceroboh ruang udara negara yang dianggap agak rapuh.

Situasi ini jauh berbeza apabila sejumlah jet China cuba ‘melintasi’ Kepulauan Natuna milik Indonesia di Laut China Selatan hampir digempur pesawat pejuang dari negara republik jiran itu.

The Defence Minister said this was decided at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (May 5).

He said the continuation of the construction project would protect 1,600 local workers from losing their jobs and more than 400 vendors comprising Bumiputera SMEs.

"If the construction of this LCS is not continued, it will have a negative impact on the workers and the Bumiputera vendors involved.

"It will also affect the Armed Forces Fund Board, which is a shareholder in Boustead Holdings Bhd," he said in a statement Friday (May 7) night.

Ismail Sabri also said that if the project was not continued, it would indirectly affect the contributors who are military personnel and the bank that gave the loan to this project would also suffer losses because Boustead Naval Shipyard could not afford to pay the loan.

It was reported that the Defence Ministry had conducted an in-depth investigation into the failure of Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Boustead Holdings, to supply six LCS for the Royal Malaysian Navy. - Bernama
