TAIPING: Mahkamah Sesyen di sini, hari ini, menjatuhkan hukuman penjara dua tahun dan denda RM50,000 terhadap seorang bekas tentera kerana didapati bersalah menceroboh hutan simpan kekal tanpa kebenaran dua tahun lalu.

Mahkamah turut memerintahkan tertuduh, A Raman Hashim, 51, dipenjara selama dua tahun lagi jika gagal membayar denda ditetapkan.

Hakim Mohd Sabri Ismail membuat keputusan itu selepas berpuas hati dengan keterangan pihak pendakwaan dan pembelaan dalam kes berkenaan.

A Raman didakwa bersama beberapa yang lain melakukan penerokaan tanpa kebenaran di Hutan Simpan Kekal Pondok Tanjung dekat Gunong Semanggol, Kerian, antara 8 Jun hingga 21 September 2014.

Dia didakwa pada 3 Mac tahun lalu mengikut Seksyen 32(1) Enakmen Akta Perhutanan Negara 1984 yang diguna pakai kerajaan negeri mengikut Enakmen Perhutanan Negeri 1985 dan boleh dihukum mengikut Seksyen 32(2) akta sama.

Sabit kesalahan, tertuduh boleh dijatuhi hukuman denda maksimum RM50,000 atau dipenjara maksimum lima tahun.

Pendakwaan dijalankan Timbalan Pendakwa Raya, Fadhli Ab Wahab, manakala tertuduh diwakili peguam, Mustafa Ghazali.

Advertisements show that the masks in question boast an almost total protection for the wearer, against “present and even future pandemics“.

The extra crucial feature of this style of mask is the ‘one-way valve’ that carefully filters the air breathed in. Instructions make clear that despite the hefty price tag they should be disposed after a single use.

After all, Najib was not convicted for stealing a mere few hundred ringgit (if he had he would have gone straight to jail). He is used to the best things in life, including the best health protection.

However, the maker of this exclusive ‘Swiss’ Xeralife brand, which is in fact manufactured locally in Malaysia and sells for around RM60 a pack of three, has now confirmed to Sarawak Report that the purpose of the product is squarely focused on the protection of the wearer rather than those around him.

Najib’s Mask Like an “Open Air Exhaust”
Indeed there has been considerable concern in recent weeks over the flaunting of these one way valve masks by well-heeled wearers across the globe, compared to the more humble paper products available to the majority of people at the chemist.

In short, according to medical experts “These masks are designed for situations in which the wearers need to protect themselves but aren’t at risk of transmitting infection to others” for example when a doctor is treating a lone infectious patient or factory workers need to avoid dust.

But, as legions of doctors have now explained, in a situation like the present pandemic, where we all wear masks to protect each other, the one-way valve acts as the ultimate selfish accessory that protects the wearer, but nobody else.

This was how experts explained the product to Healthline as more and more global authorities have started to call for people to stop wearing them over the past few weeks:

“Any mask with a one-way valve is only going to protect the person wearing it. It won’t protect anyone around that person from potential exposure to virus particles they exhale,” Dr. Ali Raja, executive vice chair of the department of emergency medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School told Healthline. “It may give the people surrounding them a false sense of security.”

“In the spirit of ‘your mask protects me and my mask protects you,’ a mask with a valve virtually makes that impossible,” said Jessica Malaty Rivera, MS, a microbiologist and contributor at the COVID Tracking Project.

“If you don’t have anything filtering what’s going out, it’s kind of like your mouth is an open air exhaust. And that’s the danger,” she told Healthline.

So as far as Najib is concerned his top dollar mask has been protecting him from all the crowds of supposedly adoring supporters who have circled him at court or indeed now on the campaign trail, but done nothing to protect them in return.

If he turns out to have picked up the virus during all these public events, no one around him will have the expected basic protection when he breaths out, speaks… or worse coughs in their direction.

To the contrary, the valve acts to funnel and turbo-charge the virus right at them!

It is not as if such products (generally described as an N95 mask variety) have not been widely reported on and officially warned against. In the US the leading agency in the field has strongly condemned their use:

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says “Masks with exhalation valves or vents should NOT be worn to help prevent the person wearing the mask from spreading COVID-19 to others.” [health news hub]

Likewise in India:

Rajiv Garg, Director General of Health Services in India wrote to all health authorities saying “the use of valved respirator N95 mask is detrimental to the measures adopted for preventing the spread of coronavirus” [Times of India]

Airlines have also started banning their use on flights:

“Any mask with an exhaust valve is not approved as an acceptable face mask for customers travelling on any Delta operated flight,” the airline announced last week, with United Airlines and JetBlue sharing similar announcements. On Wednesday, Alaska Airlines also updated its mask policy, listing “face coverings with direct exhaust valves” under its “unacceptable face coverings” section.

Delhi bus gang-rapists to hang on Friday: lawyer

Four men convicted of the 2012 gang-rape and murder of a New Delhi student will be executed on Friday, the victim's lawyer said after a court dismissed a final last-minute petition to delay the hangings.

The brutal attack on Jyoti Singh aboard a city bus sparked nationwide demonstrations and shone a spotlight on the alarming rates of sexual violence in India.

A trial court in Delhi, which had already postponed the hangings three times, on Thursday dismissed another plea to delay the executions scheduled for 5:30 am (0000 GMT) Friday.

"The court rejected their petition and said they have exhausted all their legal rights. The hangings will take place on Friday at the scheduled time," Singh's lawyer Seema Kushwaha told reporters.

Singh's mother Asha Devi welcomed the ruling and said her "daughter's soul will finally rest in peace".

The convicts had filed numerous petitions seeking delays to the executions.

One challenged the rejection of his mercy plea by the president, the last remedy available to death-row convicts in India.

The Supreme Court said it found no reason to interfere with the president's decision and rejected his petition.

Thursday's ruling came amid widespread support for the executions.

The media has also been full of grisly details about the hangings, including that the nooses will be smeared with banana and clarified butter to soften them.

Singh, 23, was returning home from the cinema in the evening with a friend when they boarded a bus, thinking it would take them home.

The five men and one juvenile knocked the friend unconscious and dragged Singh to the back of the bus and raped and tortured her with a metal rod.

The physiotherapy student and the friend were then dumped on the road. Singh died 13 days later in a Singapore hospital from massive internal injuries.

The suspected ringleader was found dead in his prison cell in a suspected suicide, while the 17-year-old juvenile spent three years in a detention centre.

Almost 400 people are on death row in India, but no one has been executed since 2015.

BANGKOK: The Thai baht has gone from being Asia’s top-performing currency in 2019 to dead last in January.

Finishing in the middle of the pack may be the best that can be expected this year as the central bank and a host of other forces line up against it.

The currency’s 9% surge in the 12 months through December was more than double that of its closest rival, the Philippine peso.

It was also a threat to the nation’s economic competitiveness that rang alarm bells in Bangkok.

Bank of Thailand Governor Veerathai Santiprabhob put the market on notice in a recent interview that this year will be different.

He plans to rein in the baht by easing curbs on foreign-currency deposits, letting exporters keep more of their proceeds overseas and allowing insurance companies to increase investment abroad.

The central bank isn’t the only thing that’s set to curb the currency.

Declining exports, low agricultural prices and a drop in international visitors loom as risks to growth over the next 12 to 18 months, according to Kobsak Pootrakool, secretary of the Council of Economic Ministers.

The outbreak of a new coronavirus in China may compound problems for the key tourism industry. Chinese travelers are the biggest foreign spenders in Thailand, accounting for about 30% of tourist receipts last year, according to government data through November.

A voting irregularity in parliament has delayed approval of the annual budget. This may harm economic growth if government expenditure is held back too long.

Meanwhile, deep political divisions could deter fund inflows from overseas, and widely reported plans for British supermarket chain Tesco Plc to sell its Thai operations have also whacked the currency.

After briefly spiking to around 29.54 per dollar earlier this month, the baht has returned to its 30.00-31.00 range.

Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg project it to reach 30.2 by the end of the year.

“We expect the baht to soften in the coming months -- it is over-valued based on our models, ” said Chang Wei Liang, a macro strategist at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore.

“The government has also flagged concerns over the strong baht, putting a brake on gains.”

Even improving economies and the easing of trade tensions between the U.S. and China are weighing on the currency, which benefited as a haven last year.

December balance of payments figures due this week are a bright spot. They are forecast to show another large current account surplus -- a trend that is likely to continue in 2020, providing some support for the baht.

Thailand has overtaken Russia and India as the most unequal country in the latest survey by a Swiss bank.

Banyong Pongpanich, chairman of Phatra Securities, posted on Facebook on Wednesday the findings of the Credit Suisse Global Wealth Databook 2018 conducted on 40 countries.

He expressed concern about the trend. Two years ago, Thailand ranked third in the report, after Russia and India.

“In 2016, the 1% richest Thais (500,000 people) owned 58.0% of the country’s wealth. In 2018, they controlled 66.9%, overtaking their peers in Russia whose wealth share fell from 78% to 57.1%,” he wrote.

The richest in Turkey also did well this year even though the economy was bad. “The wealthiest people there control 54.1%, outstripping second-ranked India, which fell to the fourth from 58.4% to 51.5% this year,” he wrote.
Apart from these four, there are no other countries in the world where the richest 1% controlled more than half of their countries’ wealth.

The most equal countries are Belgium, where the top 1% had 20.1%, followed by Australia (22.4%).

At the other end of the scale, the 10% poorest Thais had 0% wealth. Mr Banyong noted if debts are taken into consideration, their net worth might be negative.

Meanwhile, 50% of the poorest Thais (25 million people) had 1.7% of the country’s wealth while 70% (35 million) controlled 5%.

My Banyong pointed out the Gini index also confirms Thailand’s rankings. It stood at a whopping 90.2, where 100 means one person has it all and 0 means everyone has the same share.

Taekwondo chief clarifies flag controversy

"KUALA LUMPUR: Following the Malaysian flag fiasco during the opening ceremony of a Malaysian Basketball Association (Maba) competition, the poster of an international taekwondo competition has made the news for the wrong reasons.

A Facebook posting of the CK Classic International Open Taekwondo Championship, which depicted a five-star Jalur Gemilang had drawn criticism.

The tournament, organised by CK Club, and sanctioned by Selangor Taekwondo Association, is to be held at Malawati Stadium in Selangor from Aug 14 to 16 next year.

Organising chairman C.K. Karan, who is the president of both CK Club and Selangor Taekwondo, clarified today that it was a logo of Selangor and Malaysia colours and the national flag.

“What we have displayed on the poster is not a flag but a logo created to embody both Malaysia and Selangor, being the host country and the state for the said event,” said C.K. Karan yesterday.

“The five-pointed star (part of the Selangor flag) was to show the event is being organised by Selangor, and to show that the participants are from five continents. It was an artist’s impression.

“Our main objective to stage this event is for local athletes to compete and gain exposure.

“We would like to move forward and will change the star.”

Karan said he had sent a letter of explanation to the relevant authorities.

Earlier, Maba came under fire for a flag fiasco during the opening ceremony of their National Under-15 Championship in Kuala Lumpur where a national flag with a five-pointed star was displayed on a giant screen at the stadium.

The flag also showed 10 red and white stripes instead of 14 stripes.

Maba have apologised for their blunder and terminated the services of the contractor engaged to run the live stream of the event.

Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, who is also Maba’s patron, has also urged the authorities to act against the company involved.
