Coronavirus epidemic 'far from over' in Asia: WHO

BEIJING (Reuters) - The coronavirus epidemic is “far from over” in the Asia-Pacific region, and current measures to curb the spread of the virus are buying time for countries to prepare for large-scale community transmissions, a WHO official said on Tuesday.

Even with all the measures, the risk of transmission in the region will not go away as long as the pandemic continues, said Takeshi Kasai, Regional Director for the Western Pacific at the World Health Organization (WHO).

The new coronavirus first surfaced in central China in late 2019. Infections have now exceeded 770,000 cases worldwide, with the United States, Italy and Spain overtaking mainland China in confirmed cases.

“Let me be clear. The epidemic is far from over in Asia and the Pacific. This is going to be a long-term battle and we cannot let down our guard,” Kasai told a virtual media briefing.

“We need every country to keep preparing for large-scale community transmission.”

Countries with limited resources are a priority, such as Pacific Island nations, he said, as they have to ship samples to other countries for diagnoses, and transportation restrictions are making that more difficult.

Kasai warned that for countries that are seeing a tapering off of cases, they should not let down their guard, or the virus may come surging back.

The WHO does not expect any country to be safe, as the coronavirus will eventually get everywhere, said WHO technical adviser Matthew Griffith.

“Whereas countries and areas in this region have shown how to flatten the curve, outbreaks continue to pop up in new places and importation remains a concern,” Griffith said at the briefing, citing cases in Singapore and South Korea from people who traveled abroad.

The focus of the epidemic is now on Europe, but that will likely shift to other regions, Griffith said.

Samsung Display to end LCD production

Samsung Display will end its liquid crystal display (LCD) production in South Korea and China by the end of the year, the company announced.

Samsung Display, the display-making unit of Samsung Electronics, said the decision was made to provide more resources for its quantum dot (QD) displays.

As part of the decision, existing personnel at its LCD business will be shifted to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and QD display businesses.

The company will continue to supply LCD panels to clients without issue until the end of the year, Samsung Display said.

The factories that still produce LCD panels are based in Asan, South Korea and Suzhou, China. The majority of the LCD panels produced by these factories are used by Samsung Electronics' TV business for the production of its QLED TV brand.

The move by Samsung Display to end LCD production was widely expected following the company's announcement in October to invest $11 billion into QD displays.

Since the announcement, Samsung Display has been already begun reducing its LCD production capacity.

It has also placed orders for equipment that will be used in its new Q1 factory line to produce QD displays, people familiar with the matter said.

The first iteration of Samsung Display's mass-produced QD displays will use OLED displays and quantum dot as a film.

In November, Samsung Electronics announced it had developed a method to use quantum dots as light emitters.

Separately, Hikvision, which is traditionally known for its video surveillance equipment, has launched a new range of LED displays. It is the company's first foray into the commercial display market.

Hikvision's decision to enter into a new business area follows the company being blacklisted from the US market in October last year.

The Chinese surveillance camera giant was added to the blacklist due to allegations by the US government that it was involved in "human rights violations and abuses [related to] the implementation of China's campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention, and high-technology surveillance against Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other members of Muslim minority groups" in the Xinjuan region.

COVID-19: Indonesia records highest death toll

Indonesia's death toll from the novel coronavirus disease COVID-19 jumped to 19 on Wednesday, the highest in Southeast Asia to date, as the government announced that the number of infected people had reached 227.

Health Ministry Disease Control and Prevention Director General Achmad Yurianto said most deaths had been recorded in Jakarta with 12 fatalities, followed by Central Java with two fatalities, while Banten, Bali, West Java, East Java and North Sumatra each reported one fatality from the disease.

Yurianto said the death toll had soared from the reported five on the previous day because several hospitals had failed to submit their fatality reports from March 12 to March 17 and the government had only managed to obtain the updated data on Wednesday morning.

"The total number of [COVID-19] patients who have died from the disease as of 12 p.m. of March 18 is 19," Yurianto told the press on Wednesday afternoon.

The 19 fatalities mean that Indonesia has now recorded the highest death toll among Southeast Asian countries hit by the coronavirus to date.

As of Tuesday, Malaysia had recorded the most COVID-19 infections among ASEAN member states with 673 confirmed cases, but only recorded two deaths. Philippines recorded 14 fatalities, with 187 cases of infection, while Thailand recorded one death with 177 confirmed coronavirus cases.

Singapore, meanwhile, recorded 266 cases of infection but no fatalities as of Tuesday.

Indonesia also reported 55 new confirmed cases of infection on Wednesday, with Yurianto saying that most of them were reported in Jakarta with 30 cases, followed by West Java with 12 cases, Banten with four cases, and Central Java with two cases.

Yogyakarta, North Sumatra, Lampung, Riau and East Kalimantan have reported one new COVID-19 case each while independent epidemiology tests found two positive cases.

“But despite the increasing number of confirmed cases, we can also confirm that 11 people have recovered from the disease and hospitals have allowed them to go home,” he said.

He further urged the public not to panic about the situation since the skyrocketing number of confirmed cases was because more people were aware about the disease and the government had also been active in conducting contact tracing.

Yurianto described the situation as “normal” compared with other countries.

“The number of confirmed cases has dramatically increased because we are just entering the first phase of the contagion. We hope that everything will be under control and therefore new confirmed cases per day will gradually subside in April,” he added. (glh)

Singaporeans stock up after Malaysia announces coronavirus border closure

SINGAPORE (March 17): Singaporeans rushed to stock up on food on Tuesday amid fears of a disruption in supplies after Malaysia announced the closure of its borders to combat the coronavirus spread, though Singapore's government said there would be no shortages.

Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced on Monday that Malaysia would shut its borders, restrict internal movement, close schools, universities and most businesses after its tally of coronavirus cases climbed to 553, the highest in Southeast Asia.

Muhyiddin said the order would take effect on Wednesday and last for two weeks.

Malaysia is a key source of staples for Singapore, which imports more than 90% of its food. Tens of thousands of Malaysians commute every day into the wealthy city-state to work in businesses from restaurants to semiconductor manufacturing.

"Who knows how long this shutdown will go on?" said one 70-year-old retiree loading up his supermarket trolley with packets of noodles.

"We have to stock up to some extent but what's the point of hoarding stuff. No use for everyone to be panic buying."

Long queues started forming at some Singapore shops on Tuesday morning, reminiscent of panic-buying a month ago when Singapore raised its alert response level on the coronavirus, although this time around store shelves were well-stocked.

Singapore has had 243 cases of the coronavirus, with no deaths.

Supermarket chain Fairprice started imposing purchase limits on essentials such as toilet paper, noodles, rice and eggs.

A shopper at another market told Reuters that chicken and pork had run out and prices of some vegetables had spiked.

'DIVERSIFYING SUPPLY'

A Singapore government minister sought to calm fears of shortages saying the country had stocks of proteins and vegetables for more than two months of normal consumption. Stocks of noodles and rice would last for three months.

"We have plans to manage this contingency, with a combination of stockpiling, building up our domestic production capacities, and diversifying our supply sources to many countries," said Minister of Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing.

"While we may have to make some adjustments to our choices, we do have sufficient food supplies for all Singaporeans, so long as we buy responsibly," he told reporters.

Market traders reported brisk business.

Chicken vendor Win Hong said he would stay open for longer because of the unusually high demand. Fishmonger Anwar, who commutes into Singapore from Malaysia every day, said his sales were up 70% but he was not sure if he could come back to work on Wednesday.

Malaysia and Singapore, which separated in 1965 after a brief union following independence from Britain, have close economic ties. About 300,000 people a day move through two land checkpoints and over a strait between the two countries.

Some businesses in Singapore were drawing up plans to keep some Malaysian staff in the city-state for the duration of the border closure.

"I guess some will be staying in Singapore for two weeks while some like me may not have to. I saw people going with luggage bags this morning," said Zuwainah Hashim, a Malaysian engineer at a listed semiconductor company, who commutes into Singapore every day.

Companies that need help for with accommodation for workers could contact Singapore's economic agencies, which were working with dormitory operators and hotels, Chan said.
