Laptop review listing - gather your opinions

Hey all,

I am the one who responsible for this thread - Mobile GPU class listing

I could hardly spend my time on the forum nowadays and i am very sorry for that. Anyway, the purpose of this thread is to introduce an alternative that I could think of. I am working to setup a site (non-profit, so everything is there for free) that use the power of crowd/community to gather info rather than depends on one man's work. Since the first post or frontpage should be gradually updated by a thread starter or the thread won't do any good especially with like 50 pages on thread with solutions/tips/tricks scattered within random pages.

So basically I welcome any ideas from all of you. Basic features of the site will be community (social network alike) and dynamic directories. See some screenshots for rough idea on what I am talking about:

add list/spec page:

Click for full size - Uploaded with plasq's Skitch

list page:

Click for full size - Uploaded with plasq's Skitch

review page (below list page):

you can rate and review your laptop here. I will include a more specific details like "do you own this laptop?" on this area.

Click for full size - Uploaded with plasq's Skitch

community profile page:

Click for full size - Uploaded with plasq's Skitch

So basically that is what i have for the moment. I have few areas that would need you guys ideas so badly.

1) What other field should I include? GPU listing? and if so please I would appreciate if someone could help me on it.

2) Anyone wants to be admin/mod for the site? It's not even in beta so, I would appreciate active users to join.

3) Any big features should I add? I want to avoid forum since lowyat is very good at doing that already so, let me know what you think.

btw, It covers more than laptop. So far I have collections of blogs, education (universities listing in plan), games and more. Let me know what you guys think. You guys could create clans or groups on the community sections, share pictures and more.

To admin/mod - I have read both forum and section Rules and Regulation and by far I don't find anything that violate the rules. By if I do, please, please inform me before deleting or anything. It took my about a year spending time learning web making and cater it to solve the problem and couple minutes writing this post. Thank you.

List of Malaysian Societies all over the world

Hi all,

The purpose of this thread is to gather opinions and suggestions from you guys about my collections of Malaysian Societies (typically called MASA - Malaysian Student Association) which I believe would expose us closer to the higher education experience.

I am senior year actuarial science student at one of the universities in the U.S. So far I have been collecting Malaysian Societies from all over the world that I could found. Before asking for detail opinions or suggestions, take a look at the screenshot of my current collections:

Click for full size - Uploaded with plasq's Skitch

Yes it's a site. Why you may ask because like how wiki succeed, the idea is to use the crowd/community to help gather any info that we found rather than one people listing searching for everything, updating which is very time consuming. It's non-profit, everything is there for free.

My questions are:

1) I haven't collect local malaysian societies or universities site, should I do that?

2) What kind of field you want to see? So far I have links and country. Should I include contact or anything?

Click for full size - Uploaded with plasq's Skitch

3) Basic features are community (like social network abit) and dynamic directory (can add list, reviews, rate, comment and more!). What else should I put? Forum (i think lowyat did a good job on that already so..)

Click for full size - Uploaded with plasq's Skitch

Please advise and thank you very much.

The poll explained the intention.

So what's your verdict? So far I haven't make up my mind, so feel free to convince me one or another. Be sure to take note that upgradable option and put that into account as well. Perhaps we could imagine if it's not upgradable to anything at least in a year. Let me your answer and why. Thank you in advance guys.

Hi all,

This thread is made for sharing ideas about anything related to workstation (and show off as well) between LYN forum members. We already have a desktop version under Computer segment, so I was thinking why not Mobile Computing?

Please read the following:

1) I hope we all could MINIMIZE one liner replies, for instance: "derred, nice setup" or "yo dude, nice chair".

2) Asking questions like where to buy the chair or table is acceptable since the purpose of making this type of thread is to share among us.

That's all I have to say my fellow friends, it's just a guidance rather than rules so now go ahead show-off ur LAPTOP/NOTEBOOK workstation ..!!!

Once the operating system is fully reinstalled, follow the instructions in "Reinstalling the Dell MediaDirect Software" to reinstall your Dell MediaDirect software.
Step 1. Preparing the Hard Drive for the Dell MediaDirect Reinstallation
Before you begin installing your Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Vista operating system, you must prepare your hard drive using the software provided on the reinstallation media.
To prepare your hard drive:
1. Turn on your computer.
2. Insert the reinstallation media into the CD/DVD drive, and then restart your computer.
3. If your computer is already configured to boot from the CD/DVD drive, you will be prompted to press a key to boot from the CD/DVD drive. If the "Media Direct Reinstallation" does not automatically start, restart your computer and when the Dell logo appears, press <F12> immediately. This will take you to the boot menu where you need to select CD/DVD drive.
4. When the Media Direct Reinstallation menu appears, select the option to partition the hard drive.
. Select "Option 1" from the menu if you wish to use all of the hard drive for your operating system installation. This is the most common selection and is how your computer was originally shipped to you, unless you specified an operating system partition size at the time you ordered your computer.
. Select "Option 2" if you wish to designate a size for your operating system and have a data partition. This will allow you to specify a size for the operating system partition, leaving the remainder of the hard drive configured as a "data" partition (D:).
5. Once you have prepared the drive and you have returned to the main recovery menu, remove the reinstallation media and replace it with the operating system reinstallation CD. Select the option to reboot your computer.
6. If your computer does not automatically start the media, press <F12> to access the Boot Menu and select the CD/DVD boot option.
7. Install your Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Vista operating system (for help refer to the Windows installation guide), selecting the "Primary Partition" when prompted. If you have two hard drives, select the "Primary Partition" on the same disk where the MediaDirect partition resides. Once you have completed the installation of the operating system, you can begin reinstallation of the Dell MediaDirect software.

Step 2. Reinstalling the Dell MediaDirect Software

NOTE:
Note: You must follow the instructions in "Step 1. Preparing the Hard Drive for the Dell MediaDirect Reinstallation" prior to reinstalling the Dell MediaDirect. Dell MediaDirect requires a special partition which is automatically created under the hard drive preparation process.
To reinstall the Dell MediaDirect software:
1. At the Windows desktop, close all open applications.
2. Insert the reinstallation media into the CD/DVD drive.
The Dell MediaDirect(tm) Powered by Cyberlink window opens automatically.
3. Press <Enter> to reinstall Dell MediaDirect.
When the reinstallation process is complete, a message will be displayed.
4. Press <Enter> to exit the reinstallation window, and then remove the reinstallation media from the DVD drive.
5. Shut down the computer through the Start menu.
6.

QUOTE

It looks like Alienware's decision to announce its latest laptops today was hardly an arbitrary one, as it just so happens that NVIDIA has also chosen the date to get official with its new GeForce 8800 GTX and GTS laptop GPUs, which the Alienware systems are based on. Described as the "World's Fastest Notebook GPU," the 8800M GTX and GTS are each largely identical, with the notable exception of 96 stream processors in the GTX model, as opposed to 64 in the GTS. Otherwise, you can expect full DirectX 10 support from each, along with NVIDIA's PureVideo HD engine for your HD decoding needs, up to 512MB of dedicated memory, and NVIDIA's trademark "PowerMizer technology," which promises to "intelligently" balance battery life and performance. According to NVIDIA, in addition to Alienware, you can also expect Eurocom, Gateway, and Sager to offer laptops equipped with the GPUs in North America before too long, with a handful of other companies also set to trot out systems in other parts of the world. - Engadget

more on that here:

engadget news

nvidia 8800gtx and 8800gts

[attachmentid=334159]

This card comes along together with Alienware's new m15x and m17x.
Alienware m15x vs. m17x

Guys,

The time has come, even to more surprise, an 512mb 8800gtx in a 15 incher ! Alienware skipped 8700m in their mobile lines just like I mentioned they will be months ago in some threads. The price is reasonable enough for the performance offered. So enjoy it !

Alienware m15x - 15.4 incher laptop with 512mb 8800gtx options

Alienware m17x - 17 incher laptop with dual-8800gtx in SLi

And for enthusiasts, please recommend between these two with the pros and cons of having one another. Please do state the reason why should I go 15 incher or why should go for 17 incher.

Thank you in advances.

UPDATED:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/13/alienwa...m-gtx/#comments

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

courtesy of Dreamer from notebookreview: Alienware m15x

Alienware teaser

Alienware teaser 2

Courtesy of notebookreview

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4101

8700m vs. 7950gtx ?

Hi all,

first of all, I would like to inform us (in case if any of us don't know) that in games, 7950gtx performs much better than 8700m. One of the reasons because 8700m is using 128-bit memory bus while 7950gtx 256-bit. For more details, check this link out where Tom's Hardware compare XPS m1730 (8700m in SLi) with Alienware m9750 (7950gtx in SLi).

XPS m1730 vs. m9750

Note that 7950gtx performs better in native resolution of 1920 x 1200. I know the fact that in notebookcheck.net 8700m in SLi score is better. So does in tomsguide. But that doesn't justify anything. It mentioned the reason why is because the 8700m has the extreme processor which gave 8700m setup more scores than 7950gtx. I would prefer real games comparison since we don't play on 3dmarks, but games. Finish this read before posting some nonsense.

I would want to know any great reasons or findings on which one would be better chosen now for better NEAR future utilization. I don't intend for better future-proofing since proofing or not later it will still becoming obsolete when the time's come. All i want a better system that have the ability to contribute BETTER in the LONGER period of time. Say for example 7950gtx leave me with high settings for all current games for 2 years OR 8700m leaves me with prolly say, Blu-Ray decode or encoding on Vista or whatever you can find one.

Another thing will be, this thread isn't create to compare which brand or system is better. To tell you the truth is truly about the performance that the graphic cards could deliver and their PRACTICAL features that can be use from now until whenever it can. In other words, I want to compare m9750 with another m9750. Here will be the link. You can choose either 7950gtx or 8700m. So there you go:

m9750 (8700m) vs. m9750 (7950gtx)
Gaming laptop for now - Vista or XP ?

As the title suggests, what is a better option for any gaming laptop for now and near future ? Since dx10 card isn't coming yet by now for it and even if it was, Vista isn't ready for it yet. Not just in terms of games, a lot of useful 3rd-party apps aren't compatible with Vista which is really a drawback if you asked me. However, I appreciate any inputs since I don't know every fact about Vista. Probably it would work just fine for some of us here.

ADDED: I asked because I personally think it is better to get Vista now since XP is phasing out anyway after this year. Plus, Vista will be the main OS in the next 2 - 3 years which is just nice in terms of laptop's life cycle especially any newborn gaming laptop starting today.

CORRECTED: I actually copy paste the question. The dx10 card meant was 8800m. Of coz I know dx10 is already out by now even the high-end 8700m in SLi.

We're fairly certain we've held laptop before that are lighter than the Dell M1730's LCD alone. That said, it can certainly pump out the graphics, and the amBX-esque lighting functions are kind of growing on us. An extra perk to the AGEIA PhysX systems is an exclusive Unreal Tournament 3 level with extra explosion fodder, which is possibly one of the best selling points we've heard for the physics card.

Order Now !

http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/p...dhs1&l=en&s=dhs

Dualshock 3(tm) with Rumble

check this out :

QUOTE

Kaz Hirai has come to the Tokyo Game Show bearing good news indeed: Sony's finally putting out a SIXAXIS with rumble, the DualShock 3. The controller will look exactly like the SIXAXIS, and is going to be hitting Japan this November, and North America and Europe in spring 2008. A few games in development have the function already, including Metal Gear Solid 4, and existing games can be updated with rumble over the PlayStation Network. Of course, the beans were spilled by EA earlier today, and Kaz says Sony let developers know about the controller as soon as it was decided upon, which would explain all the other leaks over the year. What Sony has constantly described as a technical difficulty stemming from the motion sensitivity of the controller has apparently been overcome, but it's still hard not to pin it all on that Immersion lawsuit no matter how much spin Sony puts on things. There's no word on price for the DualShock 3; official list of games that will use the DualShock 3 or get a software update to use it follows after the break.

LIST OF PS3 TITLES COMPATIBLE WITH DUALSHOCK 3 IN JAPAN
As of September 20th, 2007 (in alphabetical order of company name)

Vampire Rain -Altered Species-
BIOHAZARD 5
Devil May Cry 4
Dark Sector
Burnout Paradise
FIFA franchise (title name TBD, by EA K.K.)
BUMPY TROT2
Dynasty Warriors 6
Fatal InertiaKOEI Co., Ltd.
GI JOCKEY 4 2007
METAL GEAR ONLINE
METAL GEAR SOLID 4 GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS
IMABIKISOU
Blast Factor
echochrome
Folklore
FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION
Go! Sports Ski
Heavenly Sword
MotorStorm
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Resistance: Fall of Men
Super Stardust HD
TOY HOME
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Warhawk

LIST OF PS3 TITLES COMPATIBLE WITH DUALSHOCK 3 IN NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE
As of September 20th, 2007 (in alphabetical order of company name)

The Darkness
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
Soldier of Fortune
BIOHAZARD 5
Devil May Cry 4
N-Cube
Warbit
Dark Sector
Turok
Highlander
Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
Burnout Paradise
FIFA franchise (title name TBD, by EA)
Legendary: The Box Gamecock
To End All Wars Ghostlight
RAGE id Software
WarDevil - Unleash the Beast
Within
Dynasty Warriors 6
Fatal Inertia
METAL GEAR SOLID 4 GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS
Blacksite: Area 51
TNA Wrestling
Unreal Tournament 3
Wheelman
Cops (codename, title name TBD)
Planet One (codename, title name TBD)
Heroes over Europe
Condemned 2
Iron Man
The Club
The Crucible
The Incredible Hulk
Blast Factor
echochrome
Elefunk
Folklore
FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION
Go! Sports Ski
Heavenly Sword
High Velocity Bowling
MLB 08: The Show
MotorStorm
NBA 08
PAIN
Rat Race
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Resistance: Fall of Man
Snakeball
SOCOM: Confrontation
Super Stardust HD
TOY HOME
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Warhawk
WipEout HD
GirpShift Sony Online Entertainment
NBA 2K8 Take Two Sports
Destroy All Humans 3
Stuntman Ignition
Assassin's Creed
BEOWULF
HAZE
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced
Warfighter 2
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas
Prototype
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena - Engadget

http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/19/sony-an...k-3-controller/

iPhone is unlocked !

After the price drop, I managed to get myself an Iphone !

This actually a huge leap since my last phone :

[attachmentid=291136][attachmentid=291137]
[attachmentid=291138][attachmentid=291139]

It has been like almost 3 - 4 years since my first handphone. After a long long wait, it feels so good to be able to get a sub RM1500 that won't have much better option than an iPhone.

So I don't know how to review this or anything, but for my first 10 minutes experience I shall say the activation is pretty easy and neat. Enjoy the pics !

[attachmentid=291146][attachmentid=291144]
[attachmentid=291143][attachmentid=291149]
[attachmentid=291145][attachmentid=291151]
[attachmentid=291148][attachmentid=291147]
[attachmentid=291150]

ADDED:

Pictures taken using the iPhone:

[attachmentid=293017][attachmentid=293018]

More pictures of the iPhone :

[attachmentid=293019][attachmentid=293020]
[attachmentid=293021][attachmentid=293022]
[attachmentid=293028][attachmentid=293032]
[attachmentid=293033]

My simple review on first few days with the iPhone:

1. software stability : so far everything is flawless. Safari works well, iPod have no complain about it. Other's such youtube, google map, weather everything works fine.

2. ease of use : This is my 2nd phone since 3 years of using the red Nokia (hav no idea what series, perhaps 6xxx ?). With my lowest knowledge in phone I still manage to figure out how to use it in minutes. So typical Apple user-friendly product.

3. signal strength : Signal strength ? the best provider in my specific place is indeed AT&T so it has been awesome. Wifi works almost everywhere I go (there are Wifi all over the place here) except for some places that doesn't have (and I will needs EDGE then). Online has never been so flexible and such addictive.

4. built and durability : So far no complain coz I got no guts to throw or do any durability test. Have seen ppl drop it tho (on concrete/tars). Nothing not even a scratch.

5. battery standby and actual usage time : Pictures above prove this part. Rite now Usage is about 5 hours 18 minutes with batt half full or half empty. Standby total of 14 hours 46 minutes. Call Time has current period of 2 hours 37 minutes. Average max batt life was told from 6 - 9 hours of non-stop calling time.

6. screen quality : Screen is small (used to laptop) but good enuf for a phone.

7. voice call quality : haha watch AT&T ads u will know how..

There are pros and cons but some of the cons are not even applied to me personally as I am no phone enthusiast. I will say this phone is good for common users or internet junkies; but still lacking more features for high-end phone enthusiasts. Nothing to worry, 3G iphone is coming out real soon. Seriously for me, this is more than enough and that means good news as I don't have to fork out few hundreds more (thousands RM) just for features I will never use (GPS, MMS etc). The only things that bugs me out is the ringtones. However at their site they mention that the ringtones customization will be available real soon. So I shall say this is a good buy and I am satisfied with it ( I risk it and I was really afraid that it will disappoint me, but so far it keeps on impressing me).

Special thanks to eddy230379 for the review layout

MORE ADDED:

Unlocking Iphone

iphonesimfree.com <--- more on that here, click on the links !

QUOTE

After numerous delays and endless cries of "hoax!", it looks like the iPhoneSIMfree iPhone unlocking software is finally available for purchase from four online retailers around the world. Wireless Imports in the US, iPhoneWorldwideUnlock in Australia, 1digitalphone in Germany, and iPhone4arab in Saudi Arabia (currently down) have all purchased bulk licenses from the iPhoneSIMfree team and are selling individual unlocks for around $100 (Update: that price is just from the US etailer, it seems; looks like the Aussies are letting it go for under 50 bucks American. Also, the Hackint0sh community is already busy at work trying to snatch these sites' code as we speak). Go nuts, and let us know your initial experiences below...

Update: The Hackint0sh guys claim they will not be reverse engineering the iPhoneSIMfree software. Ok, well, whatever.

http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/10/iphones...nlocking-begin/

Video proof

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/iphone-so...p?autoplay=true

UPDATED:

there are more and more simhacks for free out there. To name a few google iBrickr or try nullrivers.com

I won't be posting alot about that because the softwares work varies with the user self-preference. For example one who use AT&T but just want 3rd-party software like NES etc, would only need iBrickr for his/her iPhone. And just for that type of user, he/she still has options whether to choose EDGE with carrier (AT&T) or not. So that means u need to find a software to disable EDGE. I have not gotten into simhacks yet as they are useless for me for the time being; not until I need to do it that is.

Plus, the updates for Wifi stores icon is here by now so, don't know if that will caused problem for like relocking the iphone. So far I am using the iTune 7.4.2 and nothing have change by far.

Get 'em while the getting's good! Oh, and yeah, that means the Apple Store is finally back up, after an extended hiatus, so feel free to plunder your checking account with all of Apple's new wares. - Engadget

more on that, here: http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/05/apple-k...-supplies-last/

ah my 700 posts ruined by this post..

ADDED:

I almost created a new thread just for this, but I think it is not necessary. So here it is guys:

[attachmentid=290072]

QUOTE

Here she is, the iPod touch! It's definitely thinner than the iPhone, and feels completely solid (as we'd hope it would). The home button is far smaller, the face is completely flat, and generally the whole thing feels far more angular than the iPhone -- but it's all familiar territory. We were kind of hoping the touch would have a matte rear screen, but that just isn't the case, it's all chrome. - Engadget

QUOTE

Well, what do you know. Turns out the iPod touch is a reality after all. While we initially assumed that Mr. Jobs wouldn't be so kind as to bless us all with two new full-fledged iPods in a single day, we're elated that he had other ideas. The new flagship iPod has "the same size screen as the iPhone, but it's even thinner" (eight-millimeters, for those taking notes), and it also touts the "same multi-touch interface" found on the firm's handset. Additionally, it boasts a 3.5-inch widescreen display, the ability to "flick through your photos," and you even get the "slide to unlock" feature, too. And yes, this thing actually has WiFi. Of note, the built-in wireless antenna isn't exactly attractive, but if it means that we can surf the web (YouTube included) and buy tunes on our iPod, we suppose it may be an acceptable flaw. As for battery life, the touch is said to last 22-hours when playing back audio and 5-hours when watching video, but only time will tell how draining web surfing will be. The iPod touch will be arriving in 8GB and 16GB flavors and will be priced at $299 and $399, respectively, when they ship "worldwide in a few weeks." -engadget

The iPhone without the phone features, more on that here: http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/05/ipod-to...first-hands-on/

http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/05/ipod-touch-gets-official/

Thirdly, iPod nano 3G.
