I was misunderstood, speech was only for Muslims, says preacher

PETALING JAYA: Preacher Syakir Nasoha, who allegedly made inflammatory remarks against other religions in a one-minute video that has since gone viral on social media, said his speech was taken out of context and misunderstood.

His explanation comes after 3,000 police reports were lodged against him across the country for making such remarks.

He added that his speech was meant for Muslims only.

“The video was recorded back in 2017 at a mosque in Sungai Petani, Kedah. I did not ask for my speech to be recorded. What I said in the video was meant for Muslims only, not for non-Muslims,” he said in a YouTube video today.

Syakir explained that the viral video posted online containing parts of his speech was taken out of context and did not show his full remarks.

“The original video was about one hour and 30 minutes long. The shorter version of the video could have led to the misunderstanding, especially among non-Muslims.

“I would like to explain that in the original video, I was talking about the Quran and the hadith.

“I did not criticise other religions, I was only talking about our beliefs and religion. As a Muslim, I must put the Quran and the hadith above all. That’s my right as a Muslim,” he added.

Recently, a one-minute TikTok video of Syakir saying that “at the end of time, non-believers would be scrambling together to kill Muslims” made the rounds on social media and WhatsApp.

In the video, he also claimed that Buddhists and Hindus were behind the killings of Muslims in Thailand and India.

Bangi: Seorang lelaki warga emas ditemui meninggal dunia ketika menunggu giliran untuk berurusan di kaunter Cawangan Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ), Seksyen 7, Bandar Baru Bangi, di sini, hari ini.

Ketua Polis Daerah Kajang Asisten Komisioner Mohd Zaidi Hassan berkata, pihaknya menerima panggilan kecemasan berhubung kejadian itu pada jam 10.21 pagi.

"Kami dimaklumkan lelaki berusia 76 tahun berkenaan tidak sedarkan diri ketika berada di kerusi tempat menunggu di kaunter JPJ berkenaan.

"Pihak ambulans yang tiba di lokasi kemudian mengesahkan lelaki berkenaan sudah meninggal dunia," katanya dalam kenyataan, hari ini.

Menurutnya, mayat lelaki terbabit dihantar ke Jabatan Perubatan Forensik Hospital Kajang untuk tindakan lanjut.

"Sesiapa yang mempunyai sebarang maklumat mengenai kes itu boleh menghubungi balai polis berhampiran," katanya.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Miss Universe Malaysia 2017 Samantha Katie James is making headlines for all the wrong reasons again.

This time, she is claiming to have never worn a face mask in public despite the Covid-19 pandemic, unless it was necessary.

In an Instagram post, James claimed to only wear a mask when going "undercover around annoying people".

"I will never wear that f****g diaper on my face," she said in a long caption alongside a photo of her and a maskless friend.

James had previously received backlash over her controversial comments on Instagram for telling Black Lives Matter protesters in the United States as they had "chose to be born as a coloured person in America".

She has since apologised for her remarks on the protest which was triggered by the death of African American George Floyd.

The former pageant queen who was known for her nasi lemak-themed outfit at the Miss Universe pageant also claimed that her decision not to wear masks was within her rights to spread "light and sovereignty" in public.

James also claimed others had been following in her footsteps by going maskless in public, upon seeing her without a mask.

In the comment section, one user, @miza.shiad who is identified as the friend tagged in the photo applauded James's move to call the public to go maskless.

"Oh yeah baby!! And that couple that stripped off their (mask wearing emoji) whilst (running emoji) right after passing us by was epic," she wrote.

James replied telling her clinical hypnotherapist-in-training friend to "keep encoding that light".

Today Malaysia recorded 17,672 Covid-19 cases with 174 deaths.

Kuala Berang: Polis mengambil masa lebih sejam mengejar kereta dipandu lelaki yang memandu dalam keadaan berbogel, sebelum ditahan di hadapan sebuah rumah di Kampung Batu 18, di sini, hari ini.

Terdahulu, lelaki yang dipercayai mempunyai masalah mental melarikan diri selepas melanggar sekatan jalan raya (SJR) Perintah Kawalan Pergerakan (PKP) di Kampung Bukit Jong, Kuala Terengganu, pada 12.15 tengah hari.

Ketika melarikan diri, lelaki yang memandu kereta Honda City itu melanggar 12 lampu isyarat, tiga SJR PKP dan tiga kenderaan awam.

Ketua Polis Daerah Hulu Terengganu, Deputi Superintendan Mohd Adli Mat Daud berkata, sebaik melanggar SJR di Bukit Jong, lelaki berusia 45 tahun dari Taman Sinn, Semabok, Melaka itu dikatakan memecut kenderaannya menghala ke bandar Kuala Terengganu sebaik menyedari kenderaannya dikejar kereta peronda sektor Balai Chabang Tiga, Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah (IPD) Kuala Terengganu yang sedang membuat rondaan Ops Covid-19.

"Lelaki terbabit juga tidak mengendahkan arahan berhenti yang dikeluarkan polis sebanyak tujuh kali sebaik kenderaannya melalui persimpangan lampu isyarat Jalan Tuanku Mizan berhampiran Perpustakaan Awam Negeri sebelum menghala ke persimpangan lampu isyarat Bukit Besar.

"Kenderaan terbabit kemudian terus memecut memasuki Jalan Kuala Berang dan melanggar 12 lampu isyarat dan tiga SJR sebelum ditahan di Kuala Berang," katanya dalam kenyataan, hari ini.

Mohd Adli berkata, ketika melarikan diri, lelaki terbabit turut merempuh kenderaan lain, iaitu sebuah kereta dan dua motosikal.

Katanya, kemalangan pertama membabitkan sebuah kereta dipandu seorang wanita di persimpangan lampu isyarat Kampung Kubang Parit, manakala kemalangan kedua membabitkan sebuah motosikal ditunggangi seorang lelaki.

Menurutnya, pihaknya belum dapat memastikan kecederaan dialami dua mangsa terbabit.

Katanya, kemalangan ketiga berlaku di KM 30, Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Bukit Besi berhampiran Kampung Bukit Perah, Ajil, di sini, selepas kenderaan terbabit melanggar SJR PKP di Batu 18 Ajil.

"Mangsa seorang wanita yang menunggang motosikal Yamaha NVX biru patah bahu kiri dan luka di bahagian kepala.

"Kerani berusia 46 tahun dari Kampung Batu 24, di sini, dikejarkan ke Hospital Hulu Terengganu untuk rawatan lanjut," katanya.

Mohd Adli berkata, berlaku sedikit pergelutan sebelum lelaki terbabit berjaya ditahan sebelum dibawa ke hospital bagi mendapat rawatan segera selepas mengalami luka kecil di kepala, pipi kiri, kaki dan tangan.

"Kes disiasat mengikut Seksyen 42 APJ 1987 kerana memandu secara berbahaya dan melulu. Semakan rekod mendapati lelaki terbabit menghidap masalah sakit mental iaitu Schizophrenia.

"Ujian air kencing, darah dan ujian saringan Covid-19 turut dilakukan dan keputusannya negatif Covid-19," katanya sambil menambah siasatan lanjut masih dijalankan.

KUALA LUMPUR (June 22): Serba Dinamik Holdings Bhd today conducted a press conference — the second one after the company's audit issues have been made known. The company seemed to have sprung a surprise by announcing its civil suit against external auditor KPMG, on grounds of negligence, breach of contractual and statutory duties.

The legal action was taken after KPMG red-flagged several issues on Serba Dinamik's bills and transactions to the tune of RM4.54 billion in the 12-month period ended Dec 31, 2020.

The press conference was attended by its newly appointed chairman Datuk Mohamed Ilyas Pakeer Mohamed, Serba Dinamik group managing director (MD), chief executive officer (CEO) and largest shareholder Datuk Dr Mohd Abdul Karim Abdullah, and Serba Dinamik legal counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.

The following are the main issues that the host addressed in the slightly more than an hour long briefing:

Why is Serba Dinamik suing KPMG?
Shafee (legal counsel): We found no infringement of law or non compliance of provision. The key content is missing for KPMG to do whistle-blowing to the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC). As a result of unfavourable red-flagging of issues, the SC acted purely on what KPMG said and raided the premises of this company.

We hope that KPMG takes the cue that the relationship is no longer tenable, and they will resign as the auditor. Another suggestion is for the board of directors to suggest for shareholders to ask for an EGM (extraordinary general meeting) to remove them. That is the fastest way to do so and to ensure the audit process can be completed quickly.

Mohamed Ilyas (chairman): KPMG has been negligent for many times, and kept the company in a lurch for 59 days [without response]. There is negligence, plus the red flags on trivial issues.

Mohd Abdul Karim (MD and CEO): One of the issues raised is that the auditor did not look at alternative procedures to determine the amount disputed. The issues raised by KPMG could have been resolved if KPMG resorted to the usual method of meeting the clients, raising the issues one by one and to see if the client would be able to answer the issues raised.

If we do not pursue this legal path, there are so many restrictions by the authorities against things like issuing statements. Now we do have that freedom to express our side of the story.

Some say the suit against KPMG is a distraction to the actual issue by Serba Dinamik. Can you comment?
Mohamed Ilyas: I don't know where you get your information from, but I think you should verify your information. If KPMG can mislead our directors, Bursa and the SC with trivial issues, I don't think we are supposed to work with them anymore. This is why we took the decision to take legal action on them.

Plus they (KPMG) mentioned they were going to stop the audit process. How can you work with your auditor when you pay them a few hundred thousand ringgit and they dictate what to do? They should be working with us, not taking our money and behaving like this.

They are behaving like official gangsters, hiding behind the veil of whatever act they have. I have got all the information, I spoke to SC and I spoke to Bursa. I think you better clarify your information.

What is the latest update on the appointment of EY for the independent audit review?
Shafee: This process of appointing an independent reviewer and whether it will be EY, they are still [deliberating].

The idea [for a review] was started by KPMG, and KPMG started with a completely wrong process and a lack of investigation. It is therefore in the interest of the company to set aside the sort of ideas that the auditor has suggested.

Why did Serba Dinamik have to appoint three more independent directors when it already had three?
Mohd Abdul Karim: Independent directors play an important role… we need credible and more qualified independent directors to help the company face these difficult challenges. We cannot be just sitting in the room and conducting videoconferences, but there is very minimal effort to speak to authorities, substantial shareholders like EPF (Employees Provident Fund).

It has to be a more action-oriented motion to be taken, talking to people and also to explain the real issue behind this. We feel the additional independent directors with the relevant qualifications and experience and network will play an important role to sail through these difficult times.

Would Serba need to provide for the disputed amounts in the accounts [soon]?
Mohd Abdul Karim: It is very premature to make that kind of assumption. In terms of the auditing process, there are always alternative ways to determine whether the amount outstanding is really as stated. This is one of the issues raised, as to why the external auditor did not look at those options to verify those figures.

Wouldn't you be worried that the lawsuit will further delay an independent review?
Mohd Abdul Karim: What has been announced on the independent review is status quo, and it will remain as what it is (the board agrees in principle to appoint EY for the independent review). In terms of the timeline, we will work out the necessary timeline to meet the deadlines imposed onto the company. It should be manageable.

We have done nothing wrong. The company has very strong fundamentals. We hope this will put the company in a position [to conduct] business as usual. We have a lot of ongoing projects and prospects we are working on. The position of the company at the moment is quite successful, in which we are speaking to a number of governments of the day in several countries.

Former US President Donald Trump has described bitcoin as a “scam” and claimed that the cryptocurrency competes with the US dollar. Unsurprisingly, he said he wanted the dollar to be “the currency of the world”.

“Bitcoin, it just seems like a scam,” Trump said on Fox Business, according to the BBC. “I don’t like it because it’s another currency competing against the dollar.”

This isn’t the first time that the controversial “America First” politician has spoken against cryptocurrency. In 2019, back when he was US president, he slammed cryptocurrencies, including Facebook’s proposed digital coin Libra.

According to Reuters, he wrote on Twitter, “I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies, which are not money, and whose value is highly volatile and based on thin air.” Trump, of course, is now banned from the social media platform due to his public support for insurrectionists who attacked the US Capitol on 6 January.

While his claim that bitcoin competes with the US dollar will certainly be disputed by experts, he’s not alone in carrying a dim view of cryptocurrencies. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said cryptocurrencies “have no intrinsic value” and pointedly told potential investors to “buy them only if you’re prepared to lose all your money.”

Ironically, Trump’s archnemesis, China, has embarked on a massive clampdown on cryptocurrency even though the country is a major global hub for bitcoin mining. Furthermore, crypto-enthusiast Elon Musk’s Tesla pulled an awkward 180 on its decision to accept bitcoin as payment for its cars.

All that has sent the price of bitcoin falling since early May, the BBC said.
