PETALING JAYA: Ramadan bazaars in Kuala Lumpur will be allowed to continue operating under the movement control order (MCO), says federal territories minister Annuar Musa.

Speaking at a press conference today, Annuar announced that the permitted business hours are 3pm to 8pm daily, up until Hari Raya begins.

Aidilfitri bazaars will also be allowed to operate from 10am to 10pm daily.

Drones are being used as the "eyes" of the authorities as the Royal Malaysia Police monitor Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP) compliance in Ramadan bazaars around the capital.

A Bernama check at the Desa Pandan Ramadan bazaar in Kuala Lumpur yesterday evening found that drone operations were used to monitor movements, as well as to give warnings and reminders to visitors through loudspeakers attached to the drones.

Stop religious pressure on Orang Asli in Pahang,

PETALING JAYA: Lawyer Siti Kasim has called on religious authorities to stop pressuring and forcing the Orang Asli from the Batek tribe in a village in Pahang to remain as Muslims.

In a nine-minute video uploaded on her Instagram, Siti claimed that the villagers had been coerced into embracing Islam in the 1990s, adding that they knew nothing of the faith and were not practising Muslims.

She said the villagers told her that they had been under the impression that they would be evicted from their village if they did not embrace Islam.

The villagers, she said, now want to go to court to renounce Islam, but have been facing pressure not to do so.

According to the villagers, Orang Asli religious authorities and the Department of Orang Asli Development had since visited them to offer aid, such as rice.

Siti said the villagers were now worried.

Siti said “enough is enough” and that the authorities should not insist on them remaining as Muslims if they did not want to.

Siti urged the authorities to stop applying pressure on the Orang Asli.

“You’re putting fear into them and making their lives miserable. This is wrong,” she said.

Cafe owner fined rm50k, customer let off

KOTA KINABALU: A cafe operator is questioning why his cafe was slapped with a RM50,000 fine but the customer who failed to check-in with MySejahtera had escaped punishment.

Fred Malawa, 50, claimed the incident took place at 9 Cafe in Puterajaya, Sepanggar near here, last month shortly after 11pm that day. A police team conducted a routine check and found that the customer had not scanned the app.

“Without much explanation, the police immediately issued the compound to my partner who was at the shop at the time but strangely enough the customer went scot-free,” he told FMT.

“As far as I know, both should be fined in this instance but my partner did not make a fuss at the time probably because he was panicky.”

Putrajaya extends CMCO in five states and KL

KUALA LUMPUR (April 12): Putrajaya, which today warned that Malaysia could potentially face a fourth wave of the pandemic, has decided that Selangor, Johor, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur and Penang will remain under the Conditional Movement Control Order or CMCO from April 15 until 28.

Sarawak, too, will be kept under the CMCO from April 13 until 26, Bernama reported Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as saying during a media conference.

Meanwhile, the Recovery Movement Control Order or RMCO in Perlis, Melaka, Pahang, Terengganu, Sabah, Putrajaya, Labuan, Perak, Negeri Sembilan (except in Seremban) and Kedah (except in Kuala Muda) has also been extended from April 15 to 28. At the same time, the government has placed Kampung Meruntum, Sabah under the Enhanced Movement Control Order from April 13 to 26, following a rise in Covid-19 cases in the locality.

Ismail Sabri, who sounded the warning of a potential fourth wave of infections, said the possibility is there based on the coronavirus' infectivity rate here as recorded by the Ministry of Health, which is over 1.0.

"The rate of Covid-19 infectivity according to yesterday's daily case nationwide rose to 1.06. We must all comply with the SOPs (standard operating procedures), more so since there are a lot of activities during the Ramadan month, such as the Ramadan bazaars, breaking of fast and Tarawih prayers," he told reporters.

Ramadan bazaars from 3pm to 8pm at 65 locations

KUALA LUMPUR: Ramadan bazaars will operate at 65 locations in the federal capital, with business hours expected to be 3pm to 8pm during the fasting month, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said today.

DBKL said 63 locations will be supervised by the organiser of the bazaar while City Hall will supervise the bazaars at Taman Tasik Permaisuri car park (near Kuala Lumpur football stadium) and Jalan 4/38 A Taman Sri Sinar, Segambut (Wisma Suhati).

“Visitors to Ramadan bazaars are required to comply with rules set by the National Security Council such as wearing face masks, having their body temperature scanned and to check-in with the MySejahtera app,” it said in a statement today.

DBKL said the Aidilfitri Bazaar, previously held at Jalan Raja, will now resume operation at its original site, Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman, from April 17 to May 12. It was postponed last year by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The bazaar will be open from 10am to midnight, with 208 traders operating at the stretch from behind Campbell complex to the junction with Masjid India.

The Lorong TAR night market every Saturday will be shifted to Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman on April 17, April 24, May 1 and May 18.

A portion of Jalan TAR, from Jalan Esfahan (after Sogo) to Jalan Melayu, would be closed on Saturdays to make way for the night market.

Lost sound after lightning strike.

Hi Sifus,

Last week we had some heavy rains and there was a lightning strike that caused a power trip in my home. It was pitch black before I went down to reset the power. However before I could get down I could smell wire burning smell. I made a mental note of it and came back up to see what happened after resetting the power. It became clear that my external speaker that was attached to my Desktop via USB was not working anymore. Found that the power indicator was blank on the 3 pin plug, so I knew that the 3 pin plug was burnt. It was of those cheap China made plugs without a fuse (I think). There were no screws to open and check if the fuse was blown so I guessed this must be the non-fused types. Anyways I bought the same type of plug again from Lazada for the same rating and received it today. When I replaced the plug I was happy that the speaker was able to be powered on. However there were no sounds. When I played on an audio file or the Youtube videos, there is no sound even though the speaker icon is under working condition and not disabled. We can also see the mixer bars moving up and down as the music played. Only thing is there is no sound coming from the speaker.

Here is what I did on my own;

1. Deleted the sound driver and re-installed it using the Device Manager.
Didn't work.

2. Used System Restore to set the PC to an earlier date where everything was working.
Didn't work.

The drivers had been updated to the latest ones. Still didn't work at all.

What went wrong and how to get the sound to be working again? I have attached the pic of the plug and the sound icon with the working mixer bar - to show that it works but no sound is coming.

Appreciate any ideas. Thanks a lot.

MCA unaffected by ridicule in kopitiams

“This was certainly the saddest moment in our party’s history. This episode keeps me grounded to the Chinese proverb which says the people’s voice determines whether you float or sink.

“We have no other choice aside from fighting to fulfil the people’s needs.

“Most importantly, being a Chinese-based party does not stop us from fighting for the interests of other races,” he said.

Chong said it was more challenging for the party under the circumstances as it was faced with both the attacks from the opposition and the burden to preserve political stability.

He said they were aware that the current political landscape is filled with uncertainties, adding they had to do the right thing to recover the people’s mandate.

“If we serve the people and do the right thing, they will surely notice and realise that all the slander and insults thrown at MCA do not take away the sweat and tears in service to the people.

“So don’t lose hope, don’t stop working. We saw how Pakatan Harapan collapsed within two years from their own greed and power struggles to a point where the people’s mandate for reform was pushed to the back.”

Chong said MCA will use core values such as freedom, democracy and justice to win back the support of Malaysians. These core values were also that of Malaysia’s founding fathers.

“We will open a new page under the current complicated political climate so that MCA will return to be the choice of Malaysians.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Facing the prospect of being declared a bankrupt, women, family and community development minister Rina Harun has settled her multimillion-ringgit debts to a Paris-based film and television programme production company.

Lawyer Mark Ho Hing Kheong, who represented Sarl Novovision, said the exact outstanding amount, which he declined to disclose, was paid last week.

“We received a cheque on Wednesday and it was cleared the following day,” he told FMT when contacted.

A statement of claim against Rina was filed on Nov 8, 2018 by the French firm and that the full amount must be paid by July 31, 2019.

The claim was for several films, comedy shows and documentaries in the comedy genre sold to three companies in which Rina was director.

The documents also stated that an interest rate of 5% per annum was imposed from the date of the statement of claim.

She was served a bankruptcy notice for debts owed to the company to the tune of RM1,340,642.02 as of Nov 17, 2020.

According to the background of the case reported by a news portal, Rina, who was one of the directors of now-defunct companies Eurofine (M) Sdn Bhd, Fine Mobile Network Sdn Bhd and Fine TV Network Sdn Bhd, had purchased several comedy shows and documentaries from the company.

Rina and another company director, Ida Rahayu Md Noor, had in May 2014 entered into a guarantee agreement with Sarl Novovision that they would personally and jointly undertake all liabilities of the companies.

However, the companies were closed down between December 2013 and August 2015, respectively.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has urged the people to be wary of those who manipulate racial sentiments for political expediency.

Launching the National Unity Plan and National Unity Action Plan (Blueprint) 2021-2030, Muhyiddin said this was the biggest challenge of countries with a multiracial population.

“We should stay clear of politicians who try to raise their political stock by exploiting racial sentiments,” he said in his speech streamed on Facebook.

He said the government will not compromise on matters which threaten unity and this was why it set up a national unity ministry.

Muhyiddin also lauded the unity and empathy demonstrated by the people and frontliners who cared for one another regardless of race or religion in the battle against Covid-19.

“This empathy needs to be strengthened as it can help us overcome challenges to race relations more effectively.”

He called on the people to strengthen efforts to ensure they remained united, saying “the quest for unity is a journey not a destination”.

He said the National Unity Agenda is based on the concept of “Unity in Diversity”, and that long-term strategies have been outlined to harness, strengthen and maintain the unity among the people.

The three objectives of this agenda are strengthening national integration based on the Federal Constitution and Rukun Negara, building a national identity, and developing a sense of appreciation for unity among the people.

This agenda will be supported through the 10-year National Unity Plan and National Unity Action Plan (Blueprint).

Muhyiddin said the support of all parties, especially NGOs, the private sector and other stakeholders, is needed to ensure the National Unity Agenda’s objectives are met.

Is my account being hacked?

Since yesterday I have received countless alerts from Microsoft Account Team informing about my Microsoft Account password being reset. It seems someone wants to gain access to my Microsoft Account. I have not been resetting the password. Since I have linked my email to my Microsoft Account, their resetting of the password seems like unsuccessful because the account password reset code was repeatedly sent to my email. My email I have activated 2 step verification using my phone and they would need the code sent to the phone in order to gain access to my email. So far I think my email is secure because they were unable to use the Microsoft Account password reset code that was sent to my email. There were about 4 or 5 attempts to reset the password but the reset code was repeatedly sent to my email.

SO what should I do? Is action needed to be taken? What needs to be done?

Hi Sifus,

If you have closed down your business some 7 years back, I understand that we need to keep the tax returns for the past 7 years. How about the docs related to the business? Like the receipts, invoices, etc that was related to the business. This is the 7th year I closed down my business @ 2014. If possible we want to discard all the stuffs related to the business to clear the room in our house. There are tonnes of related docs/ receipts / invoices etc as it was a restaurant business that I had for a decade. I have asked my accountant but his answer is not clear. As I understand from him only the income tax returns are supposed to be kept for the past 7 years. About the receipts / invoices / doc s & stuffs don't know what he blabbered. His answer is not clear.

Any ideas from Sifus? Should the receipts / invoices / docs & stuffs be kept after 7 years?

Singapore repatriates radicalised Malaysian

A 33-year-old Malaysian was repatriated to his home country in August 2020 after investigations revealed that he was a supporter of the so-called Islamic State (IS) militant group.

The Singapore Internal Security Department (ISD), in a statement today, said the man’s wife, however, was issued with a restriction order under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for a period of two years in August 2020 after investigations found that she had been radicalised by her husband.

PETALING JAYA: Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) has voiced concern over the systemic corruption among civil servants following the crippling of an immigration syndicate which involved Immigration Department officers.

In a statement, the anti-graft watchdog’s president, Muhammad Mohan, said the systemic corruption does not augur well for Malaysia in the Corruption Perception Index score.

“It appears the rot is deep within the Immigration Department, with regular arrests taking place as the nation struggles with porous borders and being earmarked as a migrant smuggling destination,” he said.

Yesterday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission crippled an immigration syndicate with the arrest of 46 people, including 27 immigration officers.

The syndicate, which has been active for the past year, catered to employers of foreign workers who wanted them to remain here or return to their home country.

Mohan said he hoped the Immigration Department and MACC will continue weeding out corrupt officers in the department and the rest of the civil service.

“We also encourage the government to consider signing the United Nations Transnational Organised Crime Smuggling of Migrants Protocol, which will help us coordinate, legislate and fight transnational smuggling of migrants,” he said.

Former TI-M president Akhbar Satar, meanwhile, told FMT that enforcement agencies must have strong internal monitoring mechanisms in place.
He said those in supervisory roles must keep track of those under their charge.

“They must also carry out spot checks on their officers on the ground so they know they are being monitored,” he said.

Guaranteed job security in place and guaranteed salary whether covid or no covid, yet rasueh cannot be avoided.

Malaysian teacher Samuel Isaiah, who came to national attention for his work with Orang Asli communities, has been named among the Top 10 finalists of the Global Teacher Prize 2020.

The prize is a US$1 million (RM4.4 million) award given to an exceptional teacher who has made a monumental contribution to their profession.
