Smallest livable apartment size?

What is the smallest size of (in term of sqft) livable for a young family (husband + wife + infant/<5 years old)?

I had different opinion with my friend, he thinks at least 900sqft while im okay to settle down with smaller unit. Wondering which of our opinion is majority's opinion.

*Assuming a very practical layout

Cheers

Was thinking, which matters more, in term of density, the area or the development itself. Feel free to share your opinion. Thanks!
