An Inconvenient Sequel ... connecting the dots.

After reading the news about the floods in Penang and Kedah, plus the Typhoon Damrey in Vietnam, and the numerous wind, rain & ocean-based natural disasters this year (Hurricane Irma in Caribbean & Florida, Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas, Typhoon Hato in HK, Macau, & China, Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, etc.), I was compelled to watch the sequel to the 2006's An Inconvenient Truth, err ... An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power (2017) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6322922).

In the film, came across the informal term ... rain bomb ... although that's not what happened to Penang yesterday, I hope it won't happen in our country; the formal term is microburst. But I do wonder about the low atmospheric pressure that caused more rain clouds to gather in that area and unleashed their relentless fury .... I ponder about the disrupted oceanic circulation (the ocean conveyor belt system), the rising sea levels .... are they caused by extreme climate changes? How much did they factor into the flooding in our country (besides the lack of better flood mitigation system ala Tokyo's Underground Flood System)?

Nothing to politicize here ... in that documentary, Al Gore even visited one of the Republican city in Texas that could be a model city to embrace 100% renewable energy source ... before their current President threw a spanner into that part of climate control plan ... the Paris Climate Agreement, after the hard work of reaching a deal .... aduh.

How long could we go on like this before it's too late? What can we do as normal people? As citizens of this Earth? Who got the power and authority to initiate changes? What can we learn from other countries like Netherlands and Japan?
Coz it seems like we're not doing enough.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

https://www.wired.com/2017/04/christoffer-r...rainage-system/

Sony STR-DN1080 & Co.

Hi HiFi-ers!

I'm considered a n00b audiophile, although has been using a Logitech Z-5500 for at least 10 years.

Recently I've decided to go full hi-fi due to poisons by colleague and friend.
Colleague, has bought a KEF LS50 + Naim 5Si last year ... been to his house many times, and really enjoyed the higher level clarity of sounds.
Hometown friend, has a home theater setup of assorted speakers and amps ... recently he upgraded his front speakers to Q Acoustic 3020, and thinking of selling off his old KEF Cresta 30.
So, I bought his floor standing KEF Cresta 30, and wanna set up a system primarily for music listening (my Logitech Z-5500 is great for movies, gaming and bassy music but not so for real audiophile music). But I had a hard time deciding between stereo amp, and AV amp ... with budget around RM2K, I could only choose among Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, or Marantz. Then read about Sony STR-DN1080 on WhatHiFI, CNET, Crutchfield, etc. ... with its nice reviews, and its audio enhancements, e.g. Digital Sound Enhancement Engine HX (DSEE HX), etc. ... would be great for my 320kbps Spotify musics, in addition to the usual Pure Direct mode . My thinking is most probably I wanna go the Home Theather path in the near future, and this Sony AV amp seems like a good compromise.

Long story short, with the dizzying range of options from Onkyo & Denon, I chose the easy lazy path ... the only single annual AV amp budget model from Sony; the problem now is, I can't find and buy it from local sellers ... even Malaysia and Singapore Sony Centre (I'd ask even from the flagship Sony Store at 313 Somerset, they don't know when will bring in; and one of the shops at Adelphi Mall said that Sony Singapore prioritize HT integrated set over AV amp). So, I ordered one from Amazon US, coz saw that got USD100 discount the other day. After my unit arrived this week, after playing around with it a bit and listening to music at least 2 hours every night, I thought of looking for Sony AV Amp kaki in LYN here to discuss tips ... but only found Sony STR-DN1050 thread.

Hence, this new thread / topic ... (maybe moderator can merge the Sony AV Amps threads next time).

[attachmentid=9208248]
[attachmentid=9208257]

QUOTE

Arnold Schwarzenegger Returning to TERMINATOR Franchise; Justin Lin to Direct
by Adam Chitwood
Posted:April 26th, 2011 at 4:43 pm

Yep, he’s back. After announcing he was looking for new projects following his tenure as Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to return to The Terminator franchise in a new film. Long rumored to be attached to a new Terminator film, Justin Lin (Fast Five) is indeed directing. Deadline reports that the two are shopping a rights package around town in order to set the new flick up at a studio.

Schwarzenegger has been attached to a number of projects in the past few months, and it was looking like was close to choosing Kim Ji-Woon’s The Last Stand as his comeback project. There’s no word on how soon the new Terminator film would go into production, but one would assume the studio that grabs the project will want to get going as quickly as possible. Hit the jump for more.

After McG’s Terminator: Salvation reboot, the rights to the franchise were in a bit of trouble. Now it looks like the new flick will be set up with a new studio (the report states that Universal, Sony and Lionsgate are “looking hard” at the package). An interesting tidbit in the story, though, is that per copyright law, the rights to Terminator revert back to James Cameron in 2018. While it seems that Cameron really wants nothing to do with the franchise anymore, if a studio were planning on making Terminator films past that date, Cameron would have to sign off.

Nevertheless, this is about an imminent Terminator flick. Personally, I would have rather seen Schwarzenegger take on some new material rather than rehashing a character from his past. After T3: Rise of the Machines , it was pretty clear that you can only do the “robot from the other movies that isn’t really the same robot from the other movies” bit so many times before it becomes a tad tedious.

Lin is expected to be a hot commodity given the strong business that Fast Five is poised to do. The film is doing considerably well overseas and this may be his calling card to be moved up to the big leagues. I’m not a huge fan of the Fast and the Furious franchise, but I can appreciate the guy’s penchant for practical stuntwork, and it looks like he knows how to film action. Not to mention, he directed the “Modern Warfare” episode of Community, which is almost enough to forgive him for pretty much anything he does in the future.

The rights package for the new Terminator should be picked up quickly by a studio, after which a screenwriter will be hired and you can bet the flick will be fast-tracked. Here’s hoping they find an original angle with which to bring Schwarzenegger back into the loop.

Sos chili

This became a reality from the mid 1980s onwards as PC owners with modems began to dial in to communities of common interest and give and seek advice from their peers. These were a new breed of "Netizens":

There are people online who actively contribute towards the development of the Net. These people understand the value of collective work and the communal aspects of public communications. These are the people who discuss and debate topics in a constructive manner, who e-mail answers to people and provide help to new-comers, who maintain FAQ files and other public information repositories, who maintain mailing lists, and so on. These are people who discuss the nature and role of this new communications medium. These are the people who as citizens of the Net, I realized were Netizens."

When will /k be mentioned in the annals of famous online forums, and how?
Best Long Take Shots

The Greatest Long Tracking Shots in Cinema / Motion Picture by Directors or Cinematographers

http://www.bspcn.com/2007/05/10/the-long-t...hots-in-cinema/

Haven't watch all the films mentioned in the aforesaid webpage before, but for those I did... :-

1) Boogie Nights (1997) – The Opening Shot in the Club – dir. Paul Thomas Anderson
- Paul Thomas Anderson like to do that, as his more well-known films are an ensemble cast film; it's a nice way to introduce all the characters in one go. Same as with Magnolia (1999).

2) Goodfellas (1990) – The Copacabana – dir. Martin Scorsese &
Raging Bull (1980) – Pesci and De Niro Walking to the Fight – dir. Martin Scorsese
- hmm...can't remember. Maybe still a n00b when watched it last last time.

3) Oldboy (2003) – The Fight with the Hammer – dir. Chan Wook Park
- This is memorable ...

4) Children of Men (2006) – The Car Chase – dir. Alfonso Cuaron
- as the webpage said, don't watch the clip in order to avoid spoilers. But to those who watched it already, nice leh...I like the rescue the baby part better, like reality show like that.

5) Hard Boiled (1992) – The Hospital Shootout – dir. John Woo
- Heheh .. the famous long take scene .. a bit campy tho.

6) Breaking News (2004) – The opening shootout – Dir. Johnny To
- ok lor, dun really remember.

7) Strange Days (1995) – The Opening POV Chase – Dir. Kathryn Bigelow
- was following Ralph Fiennes career, didn't know who Kathryn Bigelow is coz haven't watch Point Break before that.

8) Kill Bill Vol 1 (2003) – The 5,6,7,8′s – Dir. Quentin Tarantino
- ah, Quentin ... another director who likes complicated camera setups. Yeah, that scene is obvious ... the follow everywhere. Not so obvious one is a scene from Pulp Fiction, the part where Bruce Willis character went thru a fence to get to a place? I remember asking myself, how did the camera follow thru?

9) Snake Eyes (1998) – The Opening – Dir. Brian De Palma
- the webpage mentioned Brian De Palma a lot ....

Not mentioned (yet) in the list, coz maybe not considered long take (got cut n spliced back during editing or used cgi) but nice nevertheless :-

1) Kung Fu Hustle (2004)
- Chow Sing Chi kinda follow Quentin's style a bit ... the opening where it begins in the police station n follows thru to the street.

2) El secreto de sus ojos (The Secret in Their Eyes) (2009)
- the foot chase scene and the drop from the stadium.

3) Contact (1997)
- the scene where the young Ellie Arroway rushed up the stairs and trying to get to the medicine cabinet which has a mirror. I tot that was a cool way to shoot ... how did they hide the camera? After a while, only did I read from internet that it's a computer assisted shot.

4) The Green Hornet (2011)
- the multiple split-screen spread out the bounty news part ... nicely done, but headache tho.
.
.
.
What else? Can't remember for now ...
To be Continued ...

RIP Gary Gygax, Father of CRPG & somesay MMORPG

RIP Gary Gygax (1938-2008) .... without whom, western RPGs or even most MMORPGs nowadays would be totally (icewind) poles apart ... here's to the faithful departed, though he might've failed the final saving throw in this passing plane/life, may he always roll a full d20 in the next.

If one analyze (too much free time), eastern-created MMORPGs namely MapleStory, Lineage, etc., still borrow from the D&D and AD&D systems e.g. rolling dice to create character stats, party-dungeon crawling, combat system, experience points, leveling, etc. ... in addition to obvious western MMORPGs:- WoW, Everquest, etc. .... in further addition to CRPGs:- Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, Planescape Torment, Fallout, The Elder Scroll series, Wizardry, Ultima, KotOR, The Witcher, Diablo, Dungeon Siege, Titan Quest, among numerous others. Even some JRPGs e.g. the early Final Fantasy & Dragon Quest are kinda influenced by D&D style (not in the character creation dept. though), IMO.

One could say, if J.R.R. Tolkien popularize the western fantasy-myth world, Mr. Gygax & his co-creator Dave Arneson enabled us to play in it (by taking the settings and materialize them into adventurable & playable system anyone with imagination could partake in).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Gygax
http://blogs.forbes.com/digitaldownload/20...tes-to-gar.html
http://pc.gamespy.com/articles/856/856893p1.html (include tributes from Blizzard's CEO & Bioware's GM)
http://www.simplytl.1up.com/do/blogEntry?b...cUserId=5380367
http://www.roleplay.org/articles/rpg-intro/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_role-playing_game
http://www.freeyabb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.ph...=trolllordgames (1st breaking of the news)
