Proton CEO Li Chunrong says Geely-based models to be updated – X70, X50 facelift to be launched soon?

Proton CEO Li Chunrong has said during the company’s CNY media appreciation dinner yesterday that Geely-based models will be updated as part of the company’s product strategy. At present, the four models in the carmaker’s line-up that are derived from existing Geely cars are the X50, X70, X90 and S70.

This isn’t much of a surprise given we have seen camouflaged development units of the X50 and X70 in the past. In the case of the X50, spyshots suggest the facelift for the B-segment SUV will follow the Binyue Cool. Meanwhile, the X70 won’t adopt the look of the Boyue Pro or Azkarra, but will instead get changes seen on the refreshed Boyue that surfaced in China in 2022.

As for the X90, the D-segment SUV was launched in Malaysia last May and is based on the Haoyue, which has been replaced with the Haoyue L in China. Given the X90 is not even a year old, it’s unlikely the SUV will get a refresh anytime soon. Instead, a rolling update is more likely and should include support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as we’ve previously reported.

Similarly, the S70 that was launched last November is a fresh product for Proton. Based on the fourth-generation Emgrand but extensively re-engineered for Malaysia to offer turbo power, the sedan could also get a rolling update, although the company isn’t confirming anything (including AACP support) for now.

Next-gen Proton Saga, Persona to be developed in new R&D centre in Hangzhou – to include NEV hybrids too!

At the Proton Chinese New Year media appreciation dinner today, CEO Li Chunrong shared a few updates regarding the national carmaker’s future plans. Notably, these included a surprising announcement concerning its homegrown models, reinforcing the notion that its lineup won’t be entirely replaced by Geely-based models.

Li confirmed that Proton will be setting up a new R&D centre in Hangzhou, China specifically for the development of its homegrown models, currently consisting of the Saga, Persona and Iriz. This presumably means that it will benefit from closer cooperation with Geely, which is also based in Hangzhou.

As yet, it’s unclear if the new models will be a development of the current cars or be based on Geely’s platforms – like the B-segment Modular Platform (BMA) that underpins the X50 and S70.

Whichever route Proton takes, we can safety assume these cars won’t simply be rebadged versions of existing Geely models and will have considerably greater local input. Also unclear is the timeline for the introduction of these new homegrown cars, which has been intentionally left open for debate.

It’s also been confirmed that Proton will be introducing a New Energy Vehicle (NEV, think hybrid or electric vehicle) based not on a Geely platform, but on the Saga/Persona/Iriz platform. This will likely be a mild hybrid model that uses the 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine and 48-volt belt starter-generator (BSG) from the X90.

Perodua D66B SUV Set to Hit the Roads in April – Apple CarPlay/Android Auto Integrated

RECENTLY, news of the impending release of the Perodua D66B, a B-segment SUV, has surfaced. Scheduled for launch in April, this highly anticipated SUV is poised to offer a range of features, including comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). With an expected starting price of around RM73,000, the D66B is set to make waves in the market.

Analyst Wan Mustaqim Wan Ab Aziz from Kenanga Research sheds light on the upcoming SUV, indicating that it will hit the market in April. The timing aligns with previous reports hinting at a launch in the first half of the year. The cessation of Aruz production as early as November last year further supports the likelihood of an April release. Wan Mustaqim stated that “Sime Darby is likely to benefit from the new launch of Perodua D66B and Toyota Yaris Cross which are expected to be introduced by this April.”

Previously known as Model Q, the D66B shares similarities with existing Perodua models and is anticipated to resemble the Perodua Concept X showcased at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) 18.

The D66B will boast convenient features such as an electronic handbrake, a reversing camera, and a 360-degree lens. Additionally, it will offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, although it remains unclear whether these features will be standard across all variants or exclusive to top trim levels.

While engine details are yet to be confirmed, speculation suggests that the D66B will retain the 1.5L Dual VVT-i naturally aspirated engine paired with a D-CVT gearbox. Safety features will be robust, with all models equipped with six airbags, Stop & Go ACC active cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, automatic high and low beams, automatic light adjustment, automatic emergency braking, among others.

Preparations for the D66B’s launch are reportedly in full swing, including training for sales staff, indicating an imminent debut. With its anticipated price point and feature-packed offerings, the D66B is poised to make a significant impact in the market upon its release.

Toyota suspending shipments of 10 models due to testing issues

Ten models use the affected engines globally, Toyota said, including the Hiace van, Fortuner SUV, Innova multi-purpose vehicle and Lexus-branded LX500D SUV.

Toyota, the world's biggest automaker by sales, has been separately seeking to resolve a case of misconduct related to rigged collision safety tests at small car specialist Daihatsu.

TOKYO: Toyota Motor Corp will temporarily suspend shipments of 10 vehicle models after supplier Toyota Industries Corp disclosed certification issues concerning some diesel engines.

An investigative committee found irregularities during horsepower output testing, which took measurements based on computer modules running software that differed from that used for mass production, resulting in values with less variation, the carmaker said in a statement Monday.

The certification issue the latest to beset Toyota, following an announcement by subsidiary Daihatsu Motor Co last month that most of its vehicles weren’t properly tested for collision safety and that the carmaker manipulated the results of tests dating as far back as 1989. As a result, Daihatsu is halting shipments and suspending operations through January.

“Going forward, we will be involved in all company wide activities to help rebuild Toyota Industries and review the situation to thoroughly ensure that safety and quality are the top priorities,” Toyota said of the latest disclosures.

The committee found irregularities during horsepower output testing for three engine models. In total, 10 vehicle models used the engines globally, including six in Japan, according to the company. The committee had initially been investigating Toyota Industries for certification issues related to engines used in forklifts.

Japan’s transport ministry will start an on-site inspection of the company on Tuesday.

Tesla drivers had highest accident rate, BMW drivers highest DUI rate, study finds

Tesla drivers in the U.S. were involved in accidents at a higher rate than drivers of any other brand of vehicle over the past year, according to a new study of 30 automotive brands by LendingTree.

The researchers analyzed quotes from people looking to insure their own vehicles, and did not include accident or incident data involving drivers of rental cars, a spokesperson for LendingTree told CNBC by email on Tuesday.

The study said: “It’s hard to nail down why certain brands may have higher accident rates than others. However, there are indications that certain types of vehicles attract riskier drivers than others.”

With 24 accidents per 1,000 drivers during the period from mid-November 2022 to mid-November 2023, Tesla drivers clocked in with the worst accident rate in the U.S., followed by Ram

drivers who were involved in about 23 accidents, and Subaru drivers who were involved in about 21 accidents per 1,000 drivers during the year.

By contrast, drivers of Pontiac, Mercury and Saturn vehicles were all involved in fewer than 10 accidents per 1,000 drivers during the period of the study.

BMW drivers were the most likely to engage in driving under the influence, the researchers found. They were involved in about three DUIs per 1,000 drivers in a year, about twice the rate of DUIs among Ram drivers, who were the second-worst drivers in this regard.

For driving incidents overall, which included not only accidents but also DUIs, speeding and other citations, Ram drivers had the highest incident rate, while Tesla drivers had the second-highest incident rate in the U.S.

Accidents, DUIs, speeding and other citations can all lead to higher insurance rates for drivers. Lending Tree found that one speeding ticket can bump up the price of vehicle insurance by 10% to 20%, accidents can increase rates by around 40%, while DUIs can lead to a rate increase of 60% or more.

The Lending Tree findings about drivers with the highest rates of accidents and incidents by vehicle brand followed an Autopilot software recall by Tesla in the U.S. that impacts some 2 million of the company’s electric vehicles.

Tesla EVs come standard with an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) marketed as Autopilot. The company sells more extensive driver assistance packages called Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (or FSD) options in the U.S. as well. Those who pay for FSD can also test software features that are not fully debugged yet on public roads.

Tesla’s ADAS technology is meant to help drivers with steering, acceleration and braking. CEO Elon Musk claimed in 2021 that a Tesla driver using Autopilot was about 10 times less likely to crash than a driver of the average car. While Tesla publishes its own safety reports, the company has not allowed third-party researchers to evaluate their data to confirm or debunk such claims.

Musk has also touted Tesla’s systems as if they are already, or will soon be, safe to use hands-free — yet Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems still require Tesla drivers to remain attentive to the road and ready to steer or brake in response at all times.

A two-year investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that Tesla’s Autosteer feature, which is part of Autopilot and FSD, had safety defects that may cause an “increased risk of a collision.” The NHTSA said it found that Tesla drivers can too easily misuse the cars’ Autosteer feature and may not even know whether it is engaged or switched off.

According to filings with the federal vehicle safety regulator, Tesla did not concur with the NHTSA’s findings but agreed to conduct a voluntary software recall, and promised to make safety improvements to Autosteer with “over-the-air” updates. The updated software will nag drivers to pay attention to the road more often, and lock drivers out of using Autopilot if Tesla’s systems detect irresponsible use.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment about the Lending Tree study and why the accident and incident rates may have been so high among Tesla drivers in the U.S. over the past year.

Perodua Aruz Production Axed For Yaris Cross-based D66B?

Thanks to an unnamed insider source, production of the Perodua Aruz 7-seat crossover at the national brand’s plant in Rawang has supposedly ended. Our source adds that the existing line for the Aruz will now undergo upgrades to produce the upcoming new D66B model.

First launched in 2019, the Aruz was positioned as an affordable 7-seat family crossover. Moderate success prompted a refresh in 2021, but by then this offering based on the third-gen Daihatsu Terios/Toyota Rush slowly lost favour due to the ‘maturing’ consumer trend.

Whilst the Aruz’s demise may be bad news for some, the next set of details we were clued in to by our source should offset things...

Regarding said new D66B model, our source indicated that it will both underpin the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform and feature a hybrid powertrain. The latter will make the D66B stand as the first hybrid vehicle (HEV) to be produced locally by Perodua too.

Given the details, we’re certain that the D66B will in fact be a rebadged version of the new Toyota Yaris Cross HEV. Said DNGA-based compact crossover SUV recently debuted in neighbouring Indonesia and Thailand earlier this year, with the latter solely in electrified HEV form too.

Certainly, this is an exciting development by the national automaker, which also aligns with what its President, Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, stated prior about Perodua’s gradual shift towards adopting hybrid (HEV) powertrains.

To date, Perodua has only offered its groundbreaking best-seller the Ativa in hybrid from, albeit on a limited scale through a special ‘subscription’ program that doubled up as a long-term consumer study. Just 300 units of which were made by Daihatsu and imported from Japan specifically for this.

The move to axe and upgrade the Aruz’s line seems logical, especially considering the high demands other Perodua-badged DNGA-based models – Ativa, Alza, and Axia – continue to garner. And given how the model is specced in the Kingdom north of our Peninsular’s borders, things look promising.

As a refresher, the DNGA-based compact crossover SUV entered the Thai market powered by the combination of a 1.5-litre 4-cyl petrol mill paired with a hybrid electric motor system, altogether delivering 91 PS and 121 NM.

Typical of DNGA-based models, said outputs are sent to the front wheels via an e-CVT transmission too. Headlining fuel economy figures here include a claimed average 26.3 KM/litre – 3.8 litres/100 KM – that easily sees the Yaris Cross stand as one of the most frugal in class.

Based on Perodua’s efforts rebadging other DNGA models, we can expect plenty current features and tech offered. Highlights include full-LED lighting, fully digital dash display, touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay at least, electronic parking brake (EPB), and automatic climate control.

Moreover, we can also expect a barrage of active driving assistance (ADAS) features as seen in the AV-trimmed Ativa crossover, Alza MPV, and more recently the second-gen Axia supermini. Expect to see adaptive cruise control (ACC) with stop-go function, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), and more.

At this stage, Perodua remains naturally tight-lipped regarding the D66B, especially regarding its market introduction timeline. Given its knack at delivering highly desirable mobility solutions are highly affordable and accessible price points, this certainly is one offering worth waiting on for many.
