Former prime minister Najib Razak ‘lost track of time’ with an unexpected visitor, his lawyer said.
KUALA LUMPUR: Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali reprimanded Najib Razak for being late in court again today on the 39th day of the ex-prime minister’s trial on charges of abuse of power and criminal breach of trust.

“I wish to remind the accused that he must be on schedule. Further tardiness will only delay the proceedings,” he said.

The judge, who is known for being patient and speaking only when necessary, said it was unfair to other court officials who were been punctual.

In the past, Najib did not always keep to schedule during short breaks in the morning or arriving late for the afternoon proceedings, but Nazlan had ignored it.

IRB slaps Najib with RM1.5b tax bill

The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has slapped Datuk Seri Najib Razak with an extra tax bill of around RM1.5 billion for 2011-2017.

Sources say the amount is on top of what the former prime minister had paid based on his declared income for that seven years.

The IRB sent a letter to Najib just over a week ago stating the extra tax he has to pay, sources say.

Based on its investigations, the IRB has assessed that Najib had not declared taxable income of close to RM4 billion for the period. Sources say the amount included the infamous RM2.6 billion that Malaysian and the US investigators say originated from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

GEORGE TOWN: Former state Barisan Nasional (BN) chief Teng Chang Yeow today retracted allegedly defamatory statements he once made against former Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

The retraction, which took place at the High Court here, was part of a consent judgment reached between both parties over a defamation suit brought by Lim against Teng.

The suit was over two news reports in the New Straits Times (NST) dated Jan 17 and Jan 19, 2018; and one article in Berita Harian (BH) dated Jan 17 of the same year.

“I hereby unconditionally and unreservedly retract the impugned statements that I made in the press conference convened on Jan 16, 2018 and Jan 18, 2018 respectively, which were later published.

“I regret the hardship and difficulties caused to YB (Honourable) Tuan Lim Guan Eng due to the publication of the above news articles,” Teng said before Justice Rosilah Yop.

PETALING JAYA: Former attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has filed a judicial review against the government for its refusal to allow him to apply for a passport and preventing him from leaving the country.
