President Donald Trump went after big-name conservative media figures Thursday over their criticism of his handling of the war in Iran, calling some of his former allies “low IQ," “losers” and "nut jobs."

Trump criticized Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens and Alex Jones, who have all broken with him over the war.

“They’re losers, just trying to latch on to MAGA,” Trump wrote on Truth Social before dishing out personal insults.

"They’re stupid people, they know it, their families know it, and everyone else knows it, too!" he wrote.

He said Carlson "should see a good psychiatrist," called Owens "crazy," described Jones as saying "some of the dumbest things” and referred to Kelly as having "nastily" asked him about his past remarks about comedian Rosie O'Donnell.

Owens responded by posting a screenshot of Trump’s post on X and writing, “It may be time to put Grandpa up in a home.”

“Trump’s mad that he’s wrong. He’s mad that he got set up by Israel," Jones said on his show.

Pakistan succeeded in brokering a ceasefire between the US and Iran on Tuesday by crafting a bridging proposal that softened the language of a 10-point Iranian proposal that had been swiftly rejected by Washington a day earlier, two government officials familiar with the negotiations told The Times of Israel on Thursday.

Pakistan feared that the talks were on the verge of collapse on Monday after the US notified Islamabad of its complete rejection of the Iranian proposal, the two officials said.

At that point, only one day was left before US President Donald Trump’s deadline to blow up Iranian energy sites if Tehran didn’t agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistan subsequently rushed to put together a bridging proposal that kept many of Iran’s positions intact, while using language that Islamabad believed would be easier for the US to swallow, the two officials said.

After receiving the bridging proposal from Pakistan on Tuesday, the US quickly accepted it as sufficient to serve as the basis for negotiations on a long-term deal, the government officials said.

One of the officials told The Times of Israel that they were surprised at how quickly Washington got on board with the bridging proposal and said it pointed to how badly the US wanted a ceasefire, despite Trump’s threat that “a whole civilization will die” if Iran didn’t agree to terms.

The two government officials familiar with the negotiations confirmed to The Times of Israel that the 10-point plan published by the supreme national security council was not the bridging proposal crafted by Pakistan but instead much more similar to the original Iranian offer that was swiftly rejected by the US on Monday.

Singapore - infamous for its widespread use of air-conditioning - has told government employees to bring up the temperature in offices to at least 25C (77F) as it grapples with rising energy prices caused by the Iran war.

The city-state's public offices will also install power-efficient technology like LED lights and smart sensors to help conserve energy.

Singapore joins other countries in South East Asia that have taken steps to save energy, like Thailand, which also asked people to keep air conditioners at 26-27C.

The region is heavily reliant on oil and gas shipments that pass through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively shut since the war began.

In 1999, Lee Kuan Yew, widely seen as the founding father of modern Singapore, famously credited air-conditioning with having "changed the lives of people in tropical regions" by enabling work indoors despite the heat outside.

The former prime minister is quoted as saying: "The first thing I did upon becoming prime minister was to install air conditioners in buildings where the civil service worked. This was key to public efficiency."

Lee, who died in 2015, is often credited as being the mastermind of Singapore's post colonial transformation from a resource-scarce island to one of Asia's most advanced economies.

Today, there are very few offices in the country without air-conditioning - though some will argue that its use tends to be quite excessive.

It is not uncommon for employees to bring in cardigans or sweaters to wear in office hours because temperatures are maintained at such low levels.

And unlike many cities in South East Asia with open-air shopping streets, Singapore's malls are almost entirely air-conditioned.

In fact, pedestrians on Singapore's streets will often find themselves blasted with a shock of icy cold air as they walk past entrances to malls and department stores.

All the city's buses and trains are also air-conditioned.

Most homes are also fitted with air-conditioning units - often left on overnight.

Singapore's Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment said on 8 April that the government was "taking the lead" in its energy-saving effort as the Iran war has hit global fuel supply chains.

Government employees are being told to set the air-conditioning to 25C and closely manage how long they are in use.

"Each degree raised reduces energy needs by around 10%," the ministry said.

Workers are also being urged to switch to fans and to take public transportation to cut the use of fuel.

SINGAPORE: Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore (APBS), which produces Tiger Beer, will scale down brewing operations at its Tuas plant as part of a business transformation.

The move is expected to affect about 130 jobs over the next two years.

Announcing these plans on Tuesday (Mar 24), Heineken, which owns APBS, said large-scale brewing operations at Tuas will be phased down progressively by the end of 2027.

"Production will be reallocated to established regional breweries in Malaysia and Vietnam to support a more agile regional supply approach. Over time, the Tuas site will be redeveloped to support regional logistics and innovation activities, including a pilot brewery," it added.

Malaysia, Vietnam and China are among the top source markets.

Germany turns to Indian workers

Germany is continuing to struggle with a shortage of skilled workers, as elderly staff retire, and there are not enough young candidates to fill their roles. To try to alleviate the problem the country is increasingly turning to workers from India.

For Handirk von Ungern-Sternberg, it started with an email that dropped into his inbox in February 2021. It had come from India.

The gist of the message was: "We have lots of young, motivated people looking for vocational training and we're wondering if you're interested."

Von Ungern-Sternberg was working for the Freiburg Chamber of Skilled Crafts in southwest Germany, a trade body that represents skilled workers, from bricklayers and carpenters, to butchers and bakers, and the companies that employ them.

The email arrived at an opportune moment.

"We had a lot of desperate employers, who couldn't find anyone to work for them," says Von Ungern-Sternberg. "So we decided to give it a chance."

His first call was to the head of the local butchers' guild. Butchers all over Germany were having a particularly hard time. It was a sector in marked decline.

From 19,000 small, family-run businesses in 2002, there were fewer than 11,000 left by 2021. Employers were finding it almost impossible to recruit young people to take up an apprenticeship.

"The butchery trade is hard work," says the butchers' guild head, Joachim Lederer. "And for the last 25 years or so, young people have been going in other directions."

Back in India, at Magic Billion, the employment agency that had sent that initial email, it managed to recruit 13 young people, who arrived in Germany in the autumn of 2022 to begin their butchery apprenticeships in small towns along the border with Switzerland. They would spend part of their time at college.

Among them was 21-year-old Anakha Miriam Shaji. Like many of her cohort, it was the first time she had ever left India.

She remembers her excitement. "I wanted to see the world," she says. "I wanted to make my living standard so high. I wanted good social security."

Anakha had come to work for Lederer in the town of Weil am Rhein, in the far southwestern tip of Germany, up against both the Swiss and French borders.

Three years later a lot has changed. Von Ungern-Sternberg no longer works at the chamber.

He has instead set up his own employment agency, India Works, in partnership with Aditi Banerjee, of Magic Billion, to help bring more young Indian workers to Germany.

From those original 13 there are now 200 young Indians working in German butchers' shops.

Germany is suffering a crisis of demographics. The economy needs to attract 288,000 foreign workers per year, according to a 2024 study. Otherwise the workforce could shrink by 10% by 2040, said the report by the Bertelsmann Foundation think tank.

As the last of the baby boomer generation edge into retirement there are not enough young Germans to replace them, due to a low birth rate. But there are plenty of young people in India.

"India is a country with 600 million people below the age of 25," says Banerjee. "Only 12 million come into the workforce every year. So there's a huge labour surplus."

India Works is preparing to bring 775 young Indians over to Germany this year to begin their apprenticeships. The range of professions they will join is extensive. There are now road builders, mechanics, stonemasons, and bakers, to name four.

It has been easier for skilled Indian workers to be able to work in Germany since the two countries signed the 2022 Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement. Then at the end of 2024, Germany announced that it would increase the skilled work visa quota for Indian citizens from 20,000 per year to 90,000.

Official Germany figures show that in 2024 there were 136,670 Indian workers in the country, up from 23,320 back in 2015.

Young Indians who have found employment in Germany via India Works offer similar explanations for their decision to try their luck in a new country - the difficulties of finding a job in India, the higher salaries available in Europe, and the ambition to make their own way in life.

There's Ishu Gariya, for example, a 20-year-old who after finishing Indian high school was contemplating a university degree and a job in computers. "But I didn't want to waste my money on this degree and then find work in a company for a low wage," he says.

So he swapped a Delhi suburb for a village in Germany's Black Forest region, where he's a baker's apprentice. His shift didn't finish until three in the morning and he's ensconced in a hooded down jacket to keep out the winter weather. But he's happy.

"We have high wages here," he says. "So I'll be able to help my family [back home] financially."

And he says he loves the clean air in the German countryside.

Ajay Kumar Chandapaka, 25, came from Hyderabad to sign on with Spedition Dold, a haulage company based in a village outside the city of Freiburg. He has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.

"It was very difficult for me to get a job in India," he says. "So I thought that Ausbildung would be a better role for me." Ausbildung is the German word for training or apprenticeship.

Lederer, who took two of the original cohort, now has seven young Indians working for him. He says that his new recruits have saved his business.

"When I started out 35 years there were eight shops like mine within a 10km radius," he says. "Now I'm the only one left. I wouldn't be in business today without India."

Up the street at the town hall in Weil am Rhein the mayor Diana Stöcker, from the conservative Christian Democratic Union of Germany party, is also about to hire workers from India. The municipality have identified two young men who'll be coming to Germany later this year to work as kindergarten teachers.

"We've been looking for teachers all over Germany," she says. "But they're really hard to find."

Once a member of the German Bundestag, Stöcker was elected mayor in 2024. She acknowledges the difficulty Germany has in finding young talent across the board and says there's only one solution. "We have to look overseas. It's the only possibility."

There are 'growing indications' that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the first wave of the US and Israeli strikes earlier today, it is being claimed.

Israeli media outlet Channel 12 said unnamed Israeli sources had revealed there were 'growing indications' the leader had been killed during this morning's air strikes or that he was 'hurt at the very least'.

Khamenei has not been heard from since the US and Israel launched their dual attack on Iran on Saturday morning.

Israeli sources said today that President Donald Trump specifically targeted Iran's supreme leader in its first wave of joint missile strikes with Israel.

The initial blasts are believed to have taken place close to the offices of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the capital, Tehran.

Bill Gates apologized to staff of the Gates Foundation over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, admitting he made mistakes that had cast a cloud over the philanthropic group while insisting he didn’t participate in Epstein’s crimes.

In a town hall on Tuesday, the Microsoft co-founder acknowledged that he had two affairs with Russian women that Epstein later discovered, but that they didn’t involve Epstein’s victims. “I did nothing illicit. I saw nothing illicit,” Gates said, according to a recording reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

Gates said images in the recently released Epstein files showing him with women whose faces are redacted were pictures that Epstein asked him to take with Epstein’s assistants after their meetings. “To be clear I never spent any time with victims, the women around him,” Gates said.

“It was a huge mistake to spend time with Epstein” and bring Gates Foundation executives into meetings with the sex offender, Gates said. “I apologize to other people who are drawn into this because of the mistake that I made.”

The billionaire said he met with Epstein starting in 2011, years after Epstein had pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting a minor for prostitution. Gates said he was aware of some “18-month thing” that had limited Epstein’s travel but said he didn’t properly check his background. Gates said he continued meeting with Epstein even after his then-wife Melinda French Gates expressed concerns in 2013.

“Knowing what I know now makes it, you know, a hundred times worse in terms of not only his crimes in the past, but now it’s clear there was ongoing bad behavior,” Gates told staff. Speaking of his ex-wife, he added: “To give her credit, she was always kind of skeptical about the Epstein thing.”

Gates told staff on Tuesday that he continued meeting with Epstein through 2014, flew on a private jet with Epstein and spent time with him in Germany, France, New York and Washington. “I never stayed overnight,” he said, or visited Epstein’s island.

He said Epstein “talked about the kind of intimate relationship he had with a lot of billionaires, particularly Wall Street billionaires,” and that he could help raise money for causes like global health.

Gates said because Epstein had other prestigious people at these meetings, that “made it easier for me to feel like this was a normalized situation.” He said he realizes that his association with Epstein also helped the sex offender to burnish his reputation.

Gates admitted that his ties to Epstein and newly disclosed emails from the Justice Department files had cast a cloud over the Gates Foundation and its reputation.

“It definitely is the opposite of the values of the Foundation and the goals of the Foundation,” he said. “And our work is very reputational sensitive. I mean, people can choose to work with us or not work with us.”

A Gates Foundation spokesperson said Gates holds town halls twice a year and he “spoke candidly, addressing several questions in detail, and took responsibility for his actions.”
