Thailand deploys dogs to sniff out covid-19

Faced with the threat of infection from coronavirus mutations, Health Authorities in Thailand have now deployed a canine squad to detect the lethal virus.

Faced with the threat of infection from coronavirus mutations, Health Authorities in Thailand have now deployed a canine squad to detect the lethal virus. The special dog squad, which consists of six Labradors, has been given special training to sniff out an odour that COVID-19 patients might give off. Researchers at the Veterinary Faculty at Chulalongkorn University, who trained the dogs, have said that the results so far have been impressive and the method could bolster the country's COVID response if continued.

Thailand, with its cramped up prison cells and cluttered marketplaces, has been seeking methods to detect and slash the coronavirus virus. The Southeast Asian state, famous for its tropical beaches, is now battling hard to keep its economy afloat. On May 21, it detected its first case from coronavirus variant first detected in India, pushing its COVID caseload to 126,118 with over 759 dead. Meanwhile, Thailand has so far administered 2.2 million doses of vaccine to front-line workers and high-risk groups.

As per the researchers, trained Labradors need only a few seconds to detect whether the person had contracted the infection or not. For this purpose, the dogs are made to sniff sweat samples placed in metal containers. If the dog simply walks past the sample, then the person does not have an infection. However, if the canine sits in front of the sweat sample, the person is declared to have COVID-19.

The researchers have touted that this method could prove significant for those incapable of moving out of their houses for COVID testing. Suwanna Thanaboonsombat, a volunteer who collects samples told Associated Press that such people could simply put a cotton ball under their armpits to collect sweat samples and then send it to the labs. "People can simply put cotton balls underneath their armpits to collect sweat samples and send them to the lab. And the result is quite accurate," Suwanna said. The researchers now plan to send the canine team out to communities suspected of being new COVID-19 hotspots. The dogs will work inside a mobile unit, while the collecting team can comb through the community collecting samples, the researchers said.

https://www.republicworld.com/world-news/re...-infection.html

Nice technology. Malaysia should also implement this.

Study how Thailand kept unemployment rate low

LETTERS: THE Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), at the end of last month, revealed the status of unemployment in Malaysia between 2020 and March 2021.

Unsurprisingly, the unemployment rate has significantly risen due to the fall in local production outputs, low consumption demand, diminishing business activities and reduction in international trade activities, caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, which forced the authorities to implement the first Movement Control Order in March last year.

The unemployment rate for last year was at 4.5 per cent, an increase of 1.2 per cent from the preceding year (3.3 per cent in 2019). Based on past records, our unemployment has always hovered around three per cent, indicating a stable, natural unemployment rate (3.3 per cent in 2018, 3.4 per cent in 2017 and 2016, and 3.1 per cent in 2015).

The most staggering jobless position, however, was among the youths. According to DOSM, youth unemployment, those aged between 15 and 24 years, is at 12 per cent.

This means 314,000 youths were unemployed last year, an increase from 10.5 per cent the previous year.

The latest figures in March this year showed that unemployment rate was at 13.4 per cent or involving 321,100 youths. Before assessing further, we have to understand a few basic things:

FIRST, it is very common for youth unemployment to be the highest among jobless groups of people in most of countries around the globe.

In the United Kingdom, the Office of National Statistics revealed that youth unemployment for March was at 14.3 per cent (581,691 people), while in the United States, the Bureau of Labour Statistics reported 11.1 per cent of youth unemployment.

In Indonesia, the rate almost reached as high as 25 per cent. Last but not least, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development countries recorded an average of 13.3 per cent of youth unemployment in the same month.

SECOND, most of the youths have to undergo "unemployment period" because of some logical reasons.

They may have just graduated and are looking for suitable jobs to match their interests. They may also lack experience and are not able to be immediately recruited by employers.

However, those factors only suggest why youth unemployment rate is generally higher than the national unemployment rate.

What is worse is that the youths are getting the lowest salary rates.

A study by the Higher Education Ministry showed that fresh graduates' salary had ranged from RM1,001 to RM1,500 per month for the past 10 years!

This is shocking since it is nearly close to the minimum wage of RM1,200 per month. Such a low wage bracket and rising cost of living contribute to lower fertility rates among Malaysian women and the reduction in the size of households.

Women's fertility rate dropped to 1.8 per woman (translated to two children produced on average by a mother during her fertility age) and household size was at 3.9 (around or nearly four persons in a house, including parents).

This is a worrying trend. There should be urgent efforts to address this issue. Perhaps one solution is to follow Thailand's move by providing more opportunities for youths to open up businesses in the street.

As youths have to wait a longer time for firms to hire them during this pandemic, such business opportunies would allow them to gain income and experience for future employment.

This has enabled Thailand to have the lowest unemployment rate in the world at only one per cent.

https://www.nst.com.my/opinion/letters/2021...d-kept-rate-low

Malaysia gov should give more chance to youths just like Thai gov did.

Thailand missed chance ahead Msia as film location

The coronavirus pandemic has shut down film production across the globe with studios in the United States and Europe closed because of government introduced lock down.

As a result, studios in Hollywood, the United Kingdom and France are increasingly looking to Asia as locations for productions.

Thailand, with its mature production services industries and its successful response to Covid-19, has the infrastructure necessary to accommodate large scale movie productions.

The country has, in the past, already served as stand-ins for other locations around the world. Most recently, Thailand was used as a stand-in for Bangladesh in the Chris Hemsworth film Extraction.

Vietnam and Malaysia are also being considered by directors and producers in the west as possible filming locations amid the coronavirus pandemic due to its successful government response.

Both countries, especially Malaysia, have courted Hollywood by passing beneficial and friendly tax rebate and tax exemption schemes for Hollywood productions to come and film in their respective countries.

However, Thailand still lags far behind both in terms of the tax schemes offered and also the government initiative to court foreign productions.

Thailand’s government under the current administration has not made courting filmmakers a priority before the demand went up during the pandemic.

Filmmakers and producers coming into Thailand have voiced concerns about legal loopholes authorities have used in the past to extort and tax productions.

The government also doesn’t understand the opportunity that one-hundred million dollar productions presents unlike their Malaysian counterparts who under former Prime Minister Najib Razak passed legislation after legislation to court foreign productions.

At a time when the economy has tanked due to low tourism numbers and the after-effects of the coronavirus lockdown, lucrative Hollywood productions could go a long way in filling that gap.

But unless the government begins to address the concerns producers have when it comes to tax law and tax rebate schemes, Thailand will not be able to capitalize on the interests from Hollywood.

https://www.thaienquirer.com/19094/thailand...-film-location/

Not bad. Finally one thing malaysia better than Thailand. Good job finas.

Mother turned her front porch into mini bangkok

Do you sometimes miss the good old days when we can just pack our bags and go on a vacation? While it is best to remain where we are and limit any sort of unnecessary travel, we can, sometimes, turn to our creativity to make the best out of things. This Malaysian mother creatively turns her front porch into Bangkok, with the aim of providing her children a Thailand holiday experience. So, let’s check out the photos and see if they remind you of Bangkok.

Mini Bangkok Right On The Front Porch
Posted on her Facebook, Siew Yi Low reenacted an entire Thailand holiday trip for her little ones. From paper passport to cardboard airplane, Tuk Tuk, Thai street food, and more, her effort clearly portrays what it was like when we could all travel with ease.

https://bkkfoodie.com/malaysian-mother-turn...h-into-bangkok/

I also miss thailand a lot.
