LHDN Scam

Anybody received call from 011-7147064 claiming to be LHDN? The dude spoke quite professionally in BM, almost thought it was real until he asked for personal data to "verify" identity.

Some PSA:

1. LHDN never calls individual for outstanding tax payments

2. No legitimate organization will call you and then ask for your personal info. However if you are the one who call, for example banks, they will request your info to verify identity, it should be safe because you already know who you are calling.

3. If you never do anything wrong, there is nothing to be afraid of

4. Ask for everything in black and white for money related transactions, regardless of snailmail, email or whatsapp message

Tips on choosing property for own stay

Haven't actually saved enough yet, just learning a little bit here and there. Owning a cozy place to call home is my dream.

Currently renting with a bad experience, imagined it would be much worse if it were my own property.
Renting a room at upper-middle class condominium, however it is located in the middle of a few low cost flats and has quite a ghetto environment outside of the condo vicinity. Rempits revving bikes everyday, foreign workers lepak at curbs, abandoned cars on the roadside, double triple parking narrows down the three-lane road into one (it is the only road towards the condo), a surau right opposite that broadcasts at max volume until 11.30pm every night (not the usual 5/day call-for-prayers, but super long and loud chanting non-stop). Lmao no wonder rent was cheaper than usual. Now I understand why. I thought the environment outside would not affect the quality of life inside the condo. Was open minded before renting, never expected a surau to go full blast on volume and duration, never had stereotypic view of the surrounding community. Now I know.

How to avoid buying property like such in the future? Is subsales the only way to avoid unexpected "development" in the surroundings? Really don't want to regret after buying a property in the future. Even more so to avoid depreciation due to deteriorating surrounding community. Wearing earplugs while I am writing this goddamnit.

Income tax relief on mobile plan subscription?

After a few years of filing taxes there still isn't a clear definition on "relief on monthly bill for internet subscription". It is obvious that internet subscription includes home internet plans, that is unifi, time, maxis and the likes of it. What about mobile / cellular data internet subscription? A general statement as "monthly bill for internet subscription" should include data plan subscription (obviously for internet access) for tax relief right? These days we subscribe for mobile internet mainly for internet access (the term "subscription" should define as postpaid plans), while the voice calls and sms just comes together in the package. So is it correct to put in mobile plans subscription bills into the bucket for "relief on monthly bill for internet subscription"? So many blogs, articles and "money gurus" cover the topic of income tax filing but there still isn't a clear answer on this. Or maybe I missed the answer. Anybody with a reliable source can please provide some guidance? Thank you.

http://www.hasil.gov.my/bt_goindex.php?bt_...sequ=1&bt_lgv=2

2,500 (Restricted) Lifestyle – Expenses for the use / benefit of self, spouse or child in respect of:
i. purchase of books / journals / magazines / printed newspapers / other similar publications (Not banned reading materials)
ii. purchase of personal computer, smartphone or tablet (Not for business use)
iii. purchase of sports equipment for sports activity defined under the Sports Development Act 1997 and payment of gym membership
iv. payment of monthly bill for internet subscription (Under own name)

2,500 (Restricted) Lifestyle – Purchase of personal computer, smartphone or tablet for self, spouse or child and not for business use
(Additional deduction for purchase made within the period of 1st June 2020 to 31st December 2020)

Anybody use E*TRADE?

*Please delete if irrelevant or duplicate*
Had to ask this because I couldn't find much info from other threads on E*Trade.

Several US MNC in Malaysia offers stock plan or RSU via E*Trade (TD Ameritrade was used some time ago). E*Trade commissions are $0 for Stocks, options, and ETFs compared to TSG:$1.5/order or IBKR(fixed):$1/order. In addition, there is no minimum value or inactivity fee, quite comparable to IBKR Lite (only available for US citizens). Anybody have experience using E*Trade brokerage? (non-ESPP/stockplan account)

Biggest drawback is the withdrawal fee of $25

Job change during uncertain times

First off, a little information about my situation. I have been working for 2 years at my current company. I've thought of changing career path for a long time because I find this job not to my liking and unsatisfied with how the company treat employees. I've already witnessed 6 colleagues resigned since I joined, and now 4 more are going to resign this year. So I could safely assume that the problem isn't with me, and dissatisfactions were felt by many.

I've been job hunting since the beginning of this year and attended several interviews. Only recently I have come upon an offer that is worth considering. The new offer gives a whopping 50%+ increment, although it's an entirely different career path. I'm confused how they could offer such a huge bump to someone like me who doesn't have closely relevant experience in the new industry.

At the same time, my current company finally decided to give me an increment in pay, 7% which is okay considering the current situation. Yes it is my first increment since joining the company. And also one of the reasons I am dissatisfied to continue working here. It is quite an sedentary and uncompetitive job, but super secure as the staff here say this is the perfect place to work until you retire with no worries, if you don't mind the slow growth.

During these uncertain economic situation, I'm trying to consider whether it is worth the risk to change job. I'll need to relocate from Johor to Kedah, which doesn't matter to me as both aren't my hometown, nor have I settled down with commitments. Is it worth the risk and life changes to hop into the new role during these uncertain times? Are there any other aspects I should be concerned of?

Career direction of fresh grad

Hi all. Been reading lyn for quite some time before I decided to create an account. Many posts here have helped me throughout my life so far and I am grateful. Now I am faced with a life dilemma and would like to seek some opinions. Hopefully the replies to this thread will also help others who are reading along.

I am graduating with a bachelors degree in electrical & electronics engineering. Wondering what career path would be suitable for me. As I took certain necessary subjects, I am qualified to be registered with BEM in the branch of Electrical. Now I am considering the pathways I have, based on the information I have gathered.

electrical line:
- Giant OEMs - Siemens, General Electric, ABB, Tamco etc.
- Vendors / contractors - goods and service providers
- Consulting Engineers - mostly on construction projects
- End users (factory or manufacturing plants) - Operation & Maintenance (Electrical Engineer)
- Resarcher / Lecturer / Trainer - R&D and education

electronics line:
- Giant OEMs (May include R&D) - Intel, Flex, Sony, Western Digital etc.
- Consulting / Service provider - more towards IT
- Telecommunications - TM, Maxis, Digi, Huawei, Cisco, ZTE etc.
- End users (factory or manufacturing plants) - Operation & Maintenance (Control & Instruments Engineer)
- Researcher / Lecturer / Trainer- R&D and education

Please correct me if I am wrong as I am still very new to the industry. If experienced sifus would like to give advice, it is very much appreciated. I also hope that this thread will help people in similar circumstances to clear their mind and make a wise decision on their career pathway. Now I am standing at a turning point, presented with so many choices and even more uncertainties. I have a lot of questions in mind to contemplate before making a decision.
1. Which career path is more adaptable internationally?
2. Which path is considered stable in Malaysia?
3. I study engineering because I love technology. Where can I be involved the most?
4. Can I switch career paths half way through? What if I don't have the hard skill for the career path I wish to change to?
5. Which path is more technical, which path is more managerial?
6. If the career is more to managerial, what kind of transferable skills are important?
7. Where do I see myself in 5 years? I aspire to become a focused expert who can lead my team to success and also provide sound insights on my expertise. My far away career dream is to become a CTO with a strong technical background coupled with sound business acumen. Which path is the most related to my career dream? (I am not an entrepreneur kind of person)

Thank you for reading.
