Code optimization VS hardware expansion

When it comes to system optimization, there will always come a time when one has to decide path to take in order to improve the system.

Code optimization can only do so much, there will be a limit to how much you can optimize the codes. However, hardware expansion is infinite (technically) as you can keep increasing the RAM and CPU.

Based on my experience, companies prefer to spend more time in trying to optimize the codes than spending more on the hardware. In their perspective, they have already paid for coders, so the coders should do the job. Hardware expansion can get really expensive though, as it grows exponentially.

Just curious to see what are your thoughts on this topic.

As for me, I think spending some time in code optimization is good together with some refactoring, but there should be a limit of time spent on it.
