Water cuts in Klang Valley next week? It actually starts today

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 — Klang Valley residents will be hit by yet another water disruption today as Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) announced the temporary closure to Sungai Selangor Water Phases 1,2 and 3 Treatment Plant due to odour pollution.

This is the latest episode of water woe to hit the Klang Valley after Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) — the parent company of Syabas — had, earlier this week, announced that it will shut the Sungai Selangor Phase 1 Water Treatment Plant from July 23 to July 26 for much-needed improvement works.
Both temporary shutdowns will affect several areas in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat.

Members of the public may obtain the latest information and status updates through the company’s website at www.syabas.com.my, Air Selangor smartphone application, or via Facebook and Twitter.

https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/201...s-today/1773097

Malaysia favourite destination for African student

Malaysia an increasingly favourite destination for African students, says ambassador

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 ― More Africans are choosing Malaysia as their favourite destination to pursue their higher education in this country, said Egypt's Ambassador to Malaysia, Gamal A. Metwally.

He said education is one of the most important fields where cooperation could be strengthened between the 54 African countries and Malaysia.

Metwally said Malaysia’s multi-racial, multi-ethnic and multi-religious composition are similar to African countries and is an advantage in attracting students from Africa, who are increasingly seeing Malaysia as a destination for good quality, yet affordable, education.

“The Africans don’t feel like strangers here. There is cultural tolerance here. Lifestyle is more or less the same. The cost of education and cost of living is much cheaper in Malaysia compared to other parts of the world like United Kingdom, Australia or the US,” he said.

The Egyptian Ambassador was speaking to Bernama International News Service on behalf of the 21 African Heads of Mission recently in conjunction with Africa Day, which was celebrated in Malaysia on June 27. Egypt is the current chair of the African Union (AU), which has 55 members.

ADVERTISING

inRead invented by Teads
Metwally said offers and provisions of more grants and scholarships on both sides will create more opportunities for cooperation between African countries and Malaysia in the field of education.

“Universities in Africa and Malaysia should also explore the possibility of launching programmes for exchanging professors, teaching staff and students and explore short academic programmes and courses,” he said.

Metwally estimates that there are currently between 20,000 to 25,000 African students in Malaysia and around 15,000 Malaysian students in Egypt.

“Education is a long term investment. For example, students who graduated from Al-Azhar in Egypt is in a very good position, once (they) returned to Malaysia, on how to further promote Malaysia-Egypt relations,” he explained.

Metwally said among the challenges facing the African continent ― which has some 1.3 billion population ― is combating terrorism, climate change and its impact on African countries, funding for projects, and also the issue of poverty which he described as a major challenge even now although it is generally declining.

The ambassador also acknowledged the lack of awareness about Africa among Malaysians – mainly on its culture, political system, food and lifestyle.

He said Malaysia could help African countries in the empowerment of women as well as skills and human capacity development.

Regarding South-South Cooperation, he explained that Africa and Malaysia have good partnerships such as through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), a mechanism which he described as playing an important role in fostering better people to people relations.

Metwally remarked that there is also a need to have more cooperation in the field of sports, culture and tourism, adding that Malaysia is increasingly an attractive destination for honeymoon among Africans.

“If there are direct flights between African major cities and Kuala Lumpur, I think the flow of people and interaction will be greater and (there will be) more growth in two-way tourism,” he said. ― Bernama

Speaker under fire as son is LGE’s press sec

Speaker under fire over son’s job as Guan Eng’s press sec

KUALA LUMPUR: The opposition today questioned the impartiality of Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof after the speaker acknowledged that his son is the press secretary of Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Opposition leader Ismail Sabri Yaakob (BN-Bera) had asked Ariff if his son was working with Lim, to which the speaker said yes.

“It is not something I have hidden,” he said.

“My son is 31 or 32 now, and he is free to work anywhere. More importantly, I act freely and uninfluenced in this house.”

Ismail then asked Ariff if this was not considered a conflict of interest, and whether his son’s job was related to the lack of action against Lim over his remarks on the goods and services tax (GST) refunds last year.

Lim had accused the previous Barisan Nasional government of misusing RM19.4 billion meant for GST refunds.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said earlier this week that no money was missing although a violation had been made of the Goods and Services Tax Act 2014 where the money was transferred into a Consolidated Revenue Account instead of the GST Refund Account.

However, Ariff maintained that there was no conflict of interest involved. He was supported by RSN Rayer (DAP-Jelutong), who said even PH members did not know about the matter.

“This was purposely brought up by the opposition,” he added.

Ismail Mohamed Said (BN-Kuala Krau) said Ariff was duty-bound to declare all of his interests, as well as those of his spouse and children.

He said based on his admission, Ariff should recuse himself from making any ruling related to Lim, or even the opposition’s proposed motion for a debate on the PAC report on GST refunds.

He said while Ariff had rightly told Lim that it was wrong to say “robbing” and that he should retract it, the finance minister had insisted “no, no” when the ruling was made.

“At that time, when Lim said ‘no, no’, it appeared as though you had a conflict of interest. I am emotional about this as there are MPs that refuse to follow the rules.

“It is a black mark in my history as an MP, especially as I was once a deputy speaker. How does a person make a decision when the other person is the employer of his son?”

But Ariff said the motion related to revisions of his rulings would be chaired by his two deputies anyway, as one of them involved a revision of his ruling on Lim.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...engs-press-sec/

Over 3,000 new HIV cases recorded last year, says health ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 3,293 new HIV cases were recorded last year, the deputy health minister told the Dewan Rakyat today.

“Of the sum, 47 are individuals below the age of 18,” Dr Lee Boon Chye said in response to Azalina Othman Said (BN-Pengerang) who asked about the latest statistics on children infected with HIV/AIDS.

To Azalina’s supplementary question on whether Putrajaya would enact a law to protect those with HIV, especially children, from discrimination, Lee said the ministry would look into it.

He also cited figures from the 2015 National Health and Morbidity Survey which showed a high incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension among Malaysians over 18 years of age.

He said about 17.5% of Malaysians suffer from diabetes, 30.3% have hypertension and 47.7% suffer from hypercholesterolaemia.

He was responding to Mastura Mohd Yazid (BN-Kuala Kangsar) who asked about chronic diseases affecting the youth.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...ealth-ministry/

Up to Azmin to take leave or not, says Dr M

UALA LUMPUR: Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said it is up to PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali if he wants to take leave or continue working, as individuals are innocent until proven guilty.

“The whole thing is about a political scheme, not about exposing someone’s wrongdoing but more to prevent someone from succeeding in politics,” he added on the sidelines of the Beyond Paradigm Summit 2019 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre here.

The prime minister’s comments come a day after PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin hinted that Azmin should take leave pending the police probe into a series of gay sex videos targeted at the economic affairs minister.

Former Santubong PKR Youth chief Haziq Aziz had named Azmin as one of two individuals seen engaging in homosexual activities, claiming that he was the other.

However, Azmin strongly denied the claim, saying it was part of a conspiracy to end his political career.

When asked about talk that Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, the political secretary of PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, had been picked up by the police along with two others yesterday, Mahathir said: “This is the first time I’m hearing (of it).”

On remarks by the Chinese government that both countries should have “friendly consultations” on any problems following the transfer of RM1 billion from the account of China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Ltd to Suria Strategic Resources Sdn Bhd, a finance ministry-owned company, he said: “We are ready to talk to China all the time.”

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...-not-says-dr-m/
