'Baju Raya' sales move online

Earlier this month, Malay Mail spoke to traders at Aidlfitri bazaars, who lamented that sales this year were down as more customers turned to merely window shopping — something they cited was down to the rising trend of online shopping.

This came as online shopping platforms launched campaigns to target customers during the festive period, such as Shopee's "Raya Bersama Shopee”, Lazada's "Jualan Raya Fantastik Lazada” and Zalora's "Zaloraya 2024”.

Tan noted that with Shopee, dominating the fashion category of top purchases were Malay traditional wear such as tudung (headscarf), samping (a short sarong worn after wearing a Baju Melayu) and baju kurung, demonstrating consumer preference for these customary garments and the desire to embrace cultural traditions.

"Search volume for baju Raya, ladies’ shoes, handbags, baju kurung and men’s sandals demonstrated a strong focus on fashion items.

"Notably, baju Raya searches surpassed 70 million during Shopee’s Raya campaign period held from March 19 to April 4,” he said, underscoring a significant increase in consumer demand for Hari Raya apparel in the lead-up to the holiday.

The Star Media Pivots to Real Estate

KUALA LUMPUR (April 1): Kenanga Research has maintained its “underperform” rating on Star Media Group Bhd at 42 sen with an unchanged target price of 31 sen and said Star Media is pivoting towards real estate and offering niche weekly publications.
In a note on Monday, the research house, however, said it is still early days as these ventures require time to show meaningful earnings traction.
“As such, we remain cautious of sustained losses in its traditional media business due to adex (advertisement expenditure) share erosion by digital media,” it said.

PETALING JAYA: Teachers in Sarawak are looking forward to having an assessment exam akin to the now defunct Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR), says Sarawak Native Teachers’ Association president Zulkiflee Sebli.

The union, which has more than 5,000 members teaching in national schools in Sarawak, said that the absence of such an assessment exam made it difficult to assess students or analyse the academic performance of pupils at the primary level.

Employers urged to give one off sum/increment

SINGAPORE – To help workers cope with rising living costs, employers should consider giving a one-off lump sum payment to employees in the year ahead, said the National Wages Council (NWC) on Tuesday.

It is the first time in over a decade that the council has included this recommendation in its annual guidelines. It also called on employers to consider giving a larger sum to lower- to middle-income employees.

The guidelines, which were accepted by the Government, cover the period from Dec 1, 2023, to Nov 30, 2024.

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush employed college-aged interns to design the electrical systems for the Titan submersible that vanished on June 18, according to The New Yorker.

The New Yorker reported Saturday that Rush ignored numerous safety warnings from experts and hired interns from Washington State University to work on the Titan.

"The whole electrical system — that was our design, we implemented it, and it works," the former intern Mark Walsh told Washington State University's college newspaper in February 2018.

Walsh graduated in 2017 with a degree in electrical engineering, according to the college newspaper. He started as an intern before joining OceanGate full-time as their electrical-engineering lead.

Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes Is Convicted on 4 Counts
FOR THREE YEARS, Elizabeth Holmes has faced the court of public opinion, as countless books, articles, documentaries, and TV shows have squeezed every last drop out of the saga of the blood-testing startup Theranos. Now, an actual court has delivered the final verdict. On Monday, after seven days of deliberations, a jury in San Jose, California, found her guilty on four counts of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty on another four counts, and it could not agree on three.

The four guilty charges involve Theranos’ investors, who say they were misled about the company’s capabilities, and who lost millions of dollars after its demise. Holmes now faces up to 20 years in prison for each conviction. (The judge has not yet set a hearing for sentencing.)

Over the past three months, the prosecution made its case that Holmes knowingly “chose fraud over business failure,” convincing her investors to sink more money into the company despite its failings. Twenty-nine witnesses took the stand, including former employees who testified that when Theranos’ technology did not work as promised, Holmes encouraged them to cover it up. One former product manager said the company faked demos and removed abnormal results when sending reports to investors. Another revealed that Holmes exaggerated partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, made up nonexistent military contracts, and pasted pharmaceutical logos onto Theranos’ reports, confusing investors and potential partners about who was vouching for the blood-testing technology. A journalist from Fortune, who wrote a cover story about Theranos in 2014, said Holmes failed to correct numerous errors in the reporting because it benefited the company to appear more capable than it actually was.

Mountains of evidence—including text messages, emails, and company documents—showed that Theranos’ technology was in disrepair and failed to live up to its founder’s vision as the future of blood testing. But the case hinged on whether Holmes, as the company’s CEO, knowingly deceived investors and patients, or if she acted in good faith as a struggling entrepreneur. “The battle ground is Holmes’ mental state: whether or not she had the intent to commit fraud,” says James Melendres, a former federal prosecutor and a partner at business law firm Snell & Wilmer. “You have 12 jurors—12 people off the street—who sit in a room and decide what was in Holmes’ mind.” The jury found Holmes not guilty on the counts involving patients, two of whom received bogus test results from Theranos’ blood testing technology.

The case may be a reminder that there is a limit to how much startups can get away with—and that the government is watching.

The defense called three witnesses, including Holmes herself, who spent seven days on the stand diffusing the blame across Theranos’ many scientific advisers and board members. Many of Theranos’ employees had years of experience working in biotechnology; Holmes, by comparison, dropped out of Stanford in her sophomore year.

She testified that Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, her former business partner and former boyfriend, was responsible for preparing falsified financial reports and overseeing the company’s labs. Holmes also said that Balwani controlled and abused her, affecting her mental state during her later years at Theranos. Balwani faces his own criminal trial later this year.

Holmes’ case has been viewed as Silicon Valley’s trial of the decade, as well as an indictment on startup culture itself: When does a founder’s hubris become fraud? Melendres calls the decision a “bellwether,” noting that it could become a landmark case in the Department of Justice’s handling of startups.

For the rest of Silicon Valley, the case may be a reminder that there is a limit to how much startups can get away with—and that the government is watching. “The government usually wins these things,” says Jennifer Kennedy Park, a partner at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton. She also notes the vast resources and subpoena powers that can give prosecutors an advantage. This case shows that founders are not off-limits.

Friday Evening Randoms - A story of growth

So the story begins like 2 months ago, where I have this unusual wound near my pink finger. The strange thing is, these wound doesn't seem to clot

I tried just putting plaster over it but always seems like a very thin membrane covers it, and at a slight resistance or bend of my finger the wound will reopen.

After a while cyst start to form. Quite nice to picit and explode but as you know it's a bad idea and looking back should've seen a doctor by then to solve it.

As usual I thought just sapu some of those cream and put plaster over it can solve the problem. Turns out that's not the case :

Then one day I decided shit this thing will not go away naturally once I realize I might end up with a new finger

So what to do time to kill it before it morphs to a living entity and start taking over my body

Although remove dy, somewhat sad it's gone as it's a part of me for 2 months. I watch it grow from a small insignificant entity to a major part of me.

In conclusion, ts bodoh go underestimate what a small infected wound can do.
