Clock ticking on Negeri Sembilan crisis as constitutional deadline looms over stalled assembly

KUALA LUMPUR: The clock is ticking for Negeri Sembilan’s political leaders to find a workable solution to the state’s escalating constitutional crisis.

With barely a month remaining before the six-month constitutional deadline lapses on June 5, pressure is mounting on the state government, Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH) and the palace to convene the legislative assembly and resolve the impasse surrounding Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun’s position.

The crisis, which began as a dispute involving the Negeri Sembilan royal institution and the Undang Luak, has since evolved into a wider constitutional and political confrontation involving the state government, Umno, PH, Perikatan Nasional (PN) and the palace.

The immediate concern centres on whether the assembly can legally remain suspended much longer without risking a constitutional deadlock.

Constitutional deadline approaching

Lawyer Mohd Zainuddin Omar said the state constitution clearly requires the assembly to sit within six months of its last sitting, which was held on Dec 5 last year.

“The deadline is June 5, which means there is now roughly one month left,” he said.

The uncertainty stems from the controversial assembly sitting on April 23, which was officiated by Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir but later postponed indefinitely.

Zainuddin said the sitting became contentious as it was held without the attendance of the four Undang Luak and Tunku Besar Tampin – collectively regarded under the Laws of the Constitution of Negeri Sembilan 1959 as co-rulers or “Pembesar Memerintah”.

He said the issue is not merely ceremonial but constitutional.

Under Negeri Sembilan’s unique framework rooted in Adat Perpatih, the convening, postponement or dissolution of the assembly must be undertaken in the name of the “Raja Pemerintah” – comprising not only the Yang di-Pertuan Besar but also the Undang Luak and Tunku Besar Tampin.Undang-undang Perlembagaan & Hak Sivil

“The question is whether the April 23 sitting can even be regarded as legally valid,” he said.

“The matter ultimately needs to be determined by the courts because the legality of Tuanku Muhriz’s position itself is now being challenged following the move by the Undang Luak to depose him.”

Comment:
N9 crisis arose because MB Aminuddin took sides, even though N9 law prohibits him from doing so. In past crises, all previous MB refrained from taking sides (thus the crisis was contained to within Adat/Palace) but the current MB did not, which only worsened the situation (thus spilling into executive side) and destabilizing own administration. A truly good leader would respect the Rule of Law and the Separation of Powers (which exist for a reason) for the sake of the rakyat and the country.

MB Aminuddin is a Crazy fellow who have destabilized his own administration & reduced the chances of PH wining in next election. Those Adat people & their supporter all the while have remained neutral. Some of them may even have voted for PH in the previous GE. Now PKR MB have unnecessarily go open another war front which PH now need to fight. If open state assembly sked kena vote of no confidence, not open the state assembly after 6 month it would auto dissolved. Between a rock & a hard place, PH N9 intentionally putting themself in this situation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked India’s 1.4 billion people to spend less on gold, fuel, fertilizer, and travel, a call for sacrifice that landed like a thunderclap and underlined the severity of the economic crisis caused by the war in Iran.

He urged people to buy less gold, farmers to use solar-powered water pumps instead of diesel, and white-collar workers to work from home.

Invoking Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, he said it is again in India’s national interest for office workers to use online meetings. Less commuting would reduce gas bills, putting less strain on India’s budget.

Speaking in the city of Hyderabad, an information technology hub in one of the few states his party has yet to conquer, Mr. Modi issued a long list of requests, many of them pointed at the urban middle class.

Those who own electric vehicles should use them more, he said, and car pool. Stop taking foreign holidays, he said to the estimated 1 percent who do. That should keep more dollars within India and protect the rupee, which has lost 10 percent of its value in the past year, half of that loss since the U.S. and Israel started bombing Iran in late February.

Mr. Modi is a latecomer to this message in Asia. The Philippines, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, among others, have made similar requests and even demands of their citizens since March. India, by contrast, has cushioned ordinary citizens from the full pain of the energy crunch by running higher deficits and piling losses onto the state-owned oil companies.

Mr. Modi has now signaled that kicking that can down the road is no longer possible. India is missing its budgetary targets by uncomfortable margins, the currency is weakening — as the value of India’s imports rises while its exports stay flat — and inflation is rising.

The government has a fresh opportunity to do something about it. More than 150 million people cast ballots in April, and on May 4, when the results of four state elections were tallied, Mr. Modi’s party won a crucial state by a landslide.

Nomura Holdings’ research unit said in a report on Monday that “even with state elections over, there have not been any domestic fuel price hikes yet,” but that the pressure on the Indian government’s finances is “at a tipping point.” The report said that some of the measures Mr. Modi requested with his appeal to duty this week could soon become mandatory.

For years, it has been a hallmark of Mr. Modi’s governance to ask for sacrifices from the Indian public. After he suddenly invalidated 500- and 2,000-rupee bank notes in 2016 to root out “black money” used by criminals, he asked for patience dealing with the disruptions caused.

He won important elections after that exercise, even though economic growth slowed and little black money was seized. Likewise, at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr. Modi imposed some of the most draconian lockdown measures anywhere. They shrank the economy by more than 20 percent, but he remained popular.

Such appeals haven’t always worked out so well. In November 2023, he asked well-heeled citizens to “Wed In India,” to help preserve foreign-exchange reserves. His party’s workers phoned the families of rich brides and grooms to plead for destination weddings within India instead of lavish nuptials in places like Lake Como, Italy, and Dubai.

That effort did not prevent Mr. Modi’s party from losing its parliamentary majority in 2024.

This time, Mr. Modi went a step further. He repeated the call to cut out the foreign weddings and added, “We must resolve not to purchase gold for one year.”

Gold accounts for nearly 9 percent of India’s annual import bill, behind oil and gas. Most Indian families buy it as a way to save money and to celebrate important occasions, like weddings. If they don’t give it up voluntarily, the government can restrict its purchase by other means.

Beliau bersama tiga Undang lain telah mengisytiharkan pemecatan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir sebagai Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan ke-11, berkuat kuasa serta-merta.

Bagaimanapun, Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun dalam kenyataannya pada 20 April lalu menjelaskan bahawa tindakan Mubarak yang menandatangani serta membacakan pengisytiharan menurunkan Tuanku Muhriz tidak boleh diterima atau diiktiraf.

Convicted former Harvard scientist rebuilds brain computer lab in China

SHENZHEN, April 30 (Reuters) - An American scientist convicted of lying to U.S. authorities about payments from China while he was at Harvard University has rebuilt his research lab in Shenzhen to pursue technology the Chinese government has identified as a national priority: embedding electronics into the human brain.

Charles Lieber, 67, is among the world’s leading researchers in brain-computer interfaces. The technology has shown promise in treating conditions such as ALS and restoring movement in paralyzed patients. But it also has potential military applications: Scientists at China’s People’s Liberation Army have investigated brain interfaces as a way to engineer super soldiers by boosting mental agility and situational awareness, according to the U.S. Defense Department.

“I arrived on April 28, 2025 with a dream and not much more, maybe a couple bags of clothes,” Lieber said of his move to China at a Shenzhen government conference in December. “Personally, my own goals are to make Shenzhen a world leader.”

Lieber, through an assistant, declined an interview request, citing “current commitments.” He didn’t respond to written questions from Reuters.
SMART last year appointed Lieber as an investigator, according to a post on i-BRAIN’s website dated May 1, 2025. That news was covered by some media outlets. The same day, i-BRAIN said Lieber had also been appointed its founding director – an announcement that went unreported at the time.

This story is the most comprehensive account of Lieber’s activities since he moved to China. Reuters is reporting for the first time that his lab has access to dedicated primate research facilities and chip-making equipment; that it sits within a sprawling ecosystem of state-backed institutions bankrolled by billions of dollars in government funding; and that it is housed within an institution that is luring top scientific talent back from the United States.

In 2011, Lieber was named the world’s top chemist of the preceding ⁠decade in a set of scientific rankings published by Thomson Reuters, the parent of Reuters news agency. Thomson Reuters, which in 2016 sold the business that compiled the rankings, declined to comment.

A Chinese influencer’s live-stream recounting how she was lured to Cambodia and forced into a cyber scam operation was abruptly cut off, shortly before her social media account was banned.

The 20-year-old, known online as Umi, is a live-stream host from southeastern China’s Fujian province with 24,000 followers on mainland platforms.

Earlier this year, she gained national attention after being found in distress in Cambodia and returning safely to China in January.

Three months ago, a netizen spotted a woman with a leg injury near a hotel in Cambodia, identifying her as Umi after passport details circulated online.

Photographs depicted her looking gaunt, exhausted, and filthy, clutching a CAT scan.

According to mainland outlet Jimu News, her father, surnamed Wu, a farmer, reported that the family had long believed she was working in Zhejiang province, having sent her over 80,000 yuan (US$12,000) over time after repeated requests for money.

Wu stated that he approached the police after the photos emerged and he could no longer reach his daughter.

Investigators later found that Umi had travelled to Cambodia in April last year.

The Chinese embassy in Cambodia subsequently located her at a hospital, facilitated her transfer for treatment, and her mother later brought her back to China.

Doctors in China later confirmed that she tested positive for drugs and indicated her leg issues were likely caused by nerve compression after a prolonged period of immobility.

After returning home, Umi gradually resumed her social media activity and live-stream business.

On April 3, she reportedly launched a live-stream titled “The Turbulent Story of Cambodia,” offering her first public account of how she ended up overseas.

Speaking in a frail voice and in fits and starts, she recounted how she was lured abroad by a woman she knew with promises of a high-paying job, only to have her passport confiscated and her movements restricted upon arriving in Cambodia.

She stated that she was forced into so-called “keyboard work,” a euphemism widely associated with telecom fraud.

“I was deceived by that woman, and she still hasn’t been caught,” she told viewers.

Umi remained evasive about many details, repeatedly mentioning that she would explain more later, adding only that she “really regretted it.”

The live-stream cut off after about 30 minutes, likely due to the sensitivity of the subject, but authorities have not verified her claims.

Days later, her social media account was banned, reviving online concern over the increasing number of young Chinese being drawn into scam operations in Southeast Asia.

One online observer commented: “I hope Umi can one day emerge from this dark chapter. Her story is a warning to everyone: there is no easy money.”

Cyber scam operations across Southeast Asia have surged in recent years. A United Nations report estimates that about 300,000 people from 66 countries, including China, have been trafficked into fraud compounds throughout the region.

These networks typically operate bogus high-paying job offers and impersonation scams.

1. Fuel => Gov could reduced the RM50 billion per per year subsidy
2. Electricity => Gov could reduced the RM11 billion per per year subsidy.

The Strait of Hormuz crisis would only end AFTER the Apocalypse.

As of early April 2026, the Malaysian government is spending approximately RM4 billion per month on fuel subsidies (petrol and diesel) to maintain the price of RON95 at RM1.99

RM16 Billion divided by 700,000 worker = each get RM22,857 per annum (Monthly RM 1,904)

In total how much those 700,000 get ?
(Fuel Subsidy + Overpaid price) / Automotive worker
(RM 48 billion + RM16 Billion) / 700,000 = RM91,428 per annum (RM 7,619 per month)

Assuming the 700,000 figure from gov is bullshit & the actual number is only 150,000

Tungsten Soars 557% Amid Middle East War

When nations go to war, the military-industrial complex springs into action. Relatively obscure tungsten is often on the front lines.

A combination of tight supply, Chinese export restrictions, and heavy demand from military spending, including the current war with Iran, has jolted tungsten prices by 557% since last February, a far bigger increase than commodity stars like gold, silver, copper or oil.

The exceptionally hard, scarce metal withstands extreme temperatures, making it essential for applications ranging from lighting and electronics to aerospace, automotive, and defense. Canada, the United States, and the European Union have all classified tungsten as a critical mineral.

The super-dense material is a key component in drilling equipment and armor-piercing weaponry. It is also used in helicopters, fighter jets, and ammunition. Tungsten alloys are commonly utilized in missile components, counterweights in aircraft and helicopters, artillery shells, grenades, and bullet-proof vehicles.

Military uses are set to increase 12% this year, according to Project Blue, a market intelligence firm focused on critical minerals.

Tungsten is a good example of why the United States and other countries must diversify supplies of critical minerals from China, which has controlled most of them for decades.

According to the US Geological Survey, in 2025, China produced 67,000 tonnes of tungsten out of a global market of 85,000t. The next closest competitor was Vietnam at 3,000 tonnes.
