NEW DELHI: The Mi4i, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi's latest offering, made its international debut in India on Thursday, breaking the company's tradition of launching products first in its home market and underscoring the growing importance of the South Asian nation for global handset vendors.

Priced at 12,999, the Mi4i will be available from April 30 on its own website as well as ecommerce portals Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal, and brick-and-mortar stores of The Mobile Store and Bharti Airtel, in India. Xiaomi also launched the Mi smartband and promised to introduce more 'made for India' products. The smartband is priced at 999, but the first 1,000 units will be sold at 1 under a preview programme.

"India is extremely significant to Xiaomi," said Lei Jun, founder and chief executive of the Beijing-based startup valued at more than $45 billion. "It is our largest international market outside of mainland China. We are launching Mi4i first in India, followed by our other global markets. We will launch more products for India going forward," he added.

Mi 4i will be available from April 30 in India, before any other market. Though the device will not be launched in mainland China, it will be sold in markets like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia later in May.
Xiaomi Mi 4i sports a 5-inch Full HD display and is powered by a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 64-bit octa-core processor backed by 2GB of RAM.

The smartphone runs Android 5.0 Lollipop and comes with 16GB storage and has a 13MP rear camera with dual-tone flash and a 5MP front shooter.
Mi 4i gets its power from a 3,120mAh battery. On connectivity front, it supports 3G, 4G, Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-and GPS.
"This is a flagship product that has drawn a lot of inspiration from India. A lot of tweaking has been done keeping in mind the Indian consumers and is made for India," Xiaomi Vice President Hugo Barra said here.

Xiaomi Mi 4i vs Mi4: Processor Xiaomi Mi4i houses the second generation 64-bit class based Snapdragon 615 Octa-core SoC (System on Chip), manufactured by industry leader Qualcomm. One advantage of having 64-bit processor is that the phone performance and RAM management will more be optimized and efficiently used among the apps. Users are less likely to face lag during multi-tasking. New Android applications starting this year will rollout with 64-bit architecture compliant codes, making Xiaomi Mi 4i future-proof. The flagship smartphone Xiaomi Mi4 houses a super-fast 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 series quad-core CPU.

Xiaomi Mi 4i vs Mi4: Storage Xiaomi's Mi 4i flaunts a 2GB DDR3 RAM and 16GB inbuilt memory. Where as Xiaomi Mi4 has a 3GB LPDDR 3 RAM. One downside is that Mi4 features only 16 GB (12GB available for use) in-built memory with no slot for microSD card.

Later, it will be made available across other partners, Amazon India, Snapdeal, The Mobile Store, and also on the official Mi store (online).
