[HELP] : How to create a Desktop Shortcut in Linux

i'm not sure if this belongs in here or the coders' section, but anyway, what i wanted to ask is is there any way at all to create a desktop icon/shortcut in Linux for a C program?

this is for a uni group project BUT isn't part of our marking assessment...in case anyone thinks i'm asking for homework answer.
it's just a little extra feature we were thinking of implementing to make running the program more user friendly, but so far none of us have been successful.
& i'm actually quite curious to know if it's possible & how to do it...just for fun, really.

the program itself is easy enough to run from the command line. when i tried creating a link to it on my PC at home (Ubuntu) & in the labs (CentOS), the Terminal does appear, but the program itself doesn't launch as expected.

TIA!
