Just some thought on IT jobs

Nowadays saw a lot of job ads for IT jobs but from what I can say working as a programmer is very shitty. I do know some large company treat programmer/IT professionals well but holy cow most of the other smaller companies treat them as slave. Some people will say IT graduates starting pay is high that's what I thought at first but after going through it myself, I will say don't judge a book by its cover. Some companies when interview will say your job scope is only coding/programming only but when you start working you will get asked to meet clients, provide customer support and etc which are not included in your job scope.

And another scam that you shouldn't believe is that when those companies say they provide WORK-LIFE BALANCE. Let me say there is no work life balance in this field, well not in Malaysia at least. When they tell you they provide work life balance what they mean is that you will have to work at home during whatever day or time it is, be it public holiday, weekends, on leave, vacation, when you are sleeping in the middle of the night or even your family member's funeral. That is what they meant when they tell you they provide WORK-LIFE BALANCE. I think they should call it NO-LIFE BALANCE better.

Another thing is your health, please before you decide to work in this field especially as a programmer/software developer do know that your health will get worse and worse. One of my friend working as a programmer got admitted to a hospital of working OT all the time and get fatigue and even get diagnosed with some stomach problem because eating irregularly and staying up all night. Some employers will not care about you whether you are having your lunch/dinner or whether you are asleep. They will just keep bothering you with some silly questions that they have answer to it. There was one instances where I got woke up in 3am in the morning just to fix a line of codes that my boss wrote which is written wrongly .

I am writing this so that other people know that this could happen to them. You can say I am unlucky but let me tell you a lot of my friends also share similar experiences. If you want to enter this field especially as a programmer/software developer, please be prepared to face all this dumb and shitty situations if not don't join . But luckily I am out of this field now and I couldn't feel more happier . Thanks for reading my small rant

Feeling overwhelmed at my new job

So i have started my new job as software engineer since monday and i am feeling very overwhelmed by it. This is not my first job but this is the first i felt this kind of emotion and I dont know what to about it.

I was assigned 5 tasks to me on my first day of work and i was told that i have to deliver it by friday as the tasks was actually some other guy’s tasks but they fired him last week. So i was told to take over his tasks. The things that the company is working on is very new to me and how the company operates is very different from other software engineer job for example they do their testing differently etc. I did brought my work back home to do it but i found myself worry about coding standards that the company set and there is barely any progress

Now i am left with 2 days before the presentation and I dont think i will be able to finish it planning, verifying the previous guy work, coding and testing for the remaining tasks. I have asked for more time from my senior but he quickly rejected it stating the tasks is easy. So do I talk to my hiring manager now cause I am very spooked and worried about the consequences?

Is my boss asking too much?

Hey guys, so i just joined a start up fintech company 3 weeks ago as a junior programmer. So far my working experience there is not good because of bad planning, bad coding and bad structure in the project they are doing. There are no senior programmers there to oversee and monitor the project and the project is handled by my CTO who has not much technical programming skill and 2 junior programmers before I joined the company.

So for the past 2 weeks, I found out that my CTO aka my boss always like to assign task last minute and ask the team to complete it during the weekend. For example, he will ask/inform us to fix a new bug or add new features for the project on friday evening and say that we will have to complete it over the weekend as the due date is Monday. I know as a programmer sometimes I will need to work in the weekend if there are emergency issues but do I have to really give up my weekend for my job?

Because during weekend I have other commitments for example I am taking Japanese language course on Saturday or maybe sometimes I am going to attend some talks or workshops. The company also did not compensate us programmer for working in the weekend even though they say if you work in the weekend I can get a replacement holiday but some of colleagues say most of the time they did not get the approval for replacement holiday from the CTO. I even told my boss during my interview with him that I have other commitments in the weekend. But I am getting a negative reaction out of him when I told him yesterday that I cant complete it during the weekend and he even ask me to quit my studies and stop attending for talks in the weekend. How should I deal with this?

P.S: This is my second job, my previous job OT is super rare (once in 2 years) so I am not familiar on dealing with this problem.

Should I talk to my boss?

So I started my new job with a new startup company and I was given the chance to look at their current project. They were developing a business solution using a PHP framework but when I took a look at their code, all I saw was very raw PHP coding and they did not utilize the functionality that comes with the framework. Both the PHP team and the manager do not know much about the framework.

So for the past 2 days, my manager had conducted meetings with the PHP team to discuss some security issues for the project and my manager had asked me whether I can fixed it since I have the most knowledge about the framework. I did managed to fix the security issues easily(thanks to the framework ) but today in another meeting they thought about another problem and ask me to fix it but because the PHP team did not utilize the framework (if it is utilize well, can fix it within 20 minutes) it is very very hard to code it and I am not good at using raw PHP coding and they want it ASAP.

The project is a large scale project and already went live. I am also not clear what is the flow of the project as the coding of the project is very very messy (nightmare to read) and i just join the company for 4 days. So should I tell my manager that I am not able to do it on time? Or any other suggestions how to face this problem?

Coding test or (Any skill test)

Does coding test or any skill test really important for a company to determine which candidate to hire?

A lot of my friends failed these kind of test when they attend a job interview and the company did not hire them but when they went to an interview with no test they often received a job offer. One of my friend ask his manager why he did not test his coding/programming skill during the interview, his manager said he knew his skill was fine without testing him. Even my current boss also gave me the same answers.

I think a lot of companies that included skill test in an interview always miss out very high potential candidate for the job and I dont think they should take the test results as the main indication to see if they should hire a candidate or not. What you guys think about skill test?
