Screw you Grabup

I've been using GrabUp to host my images, share my pics with friends
for a number of months now, and the thing I love so much about it was that it was quick, and free.
All I had to do was press SHIFT+Command+4 and it was instantly uploaded AND the address copied into my
clipboard for quick sharing over IM or forums.

Now they've gone and made changes to their business model with adding a Go Pro option.
One of the features with the GoPro option was the ability to upload to my own server. At first I thought
this is great! Cause I can upload it to my own server without hogging theirs... but wait.. I have to PAY
USD20 for it now?!! I thought the whole point was to still give it out free but also have the ability
to lighten their burden server side.

I hate you guys at GrabUp... the whole point that was good about your software was that it was
free and quick. Now it's just quick, but being a few seconds faster doesn't justify the cost.

Sigh, I have so many little little apps that frankly don't cost alot of money each, but slowly they start to add up.
I was counting, Disco, AppZapper, Transmit, Coda...and now GrabUp. All these little apps only do about one thing, cost
little, but still they all are starting to strain me.

End Rant.

But spare me your precious few minutes, for the basis of this article is not to
review to DEATH the two contenders but see how far does a 'name-brand' cheapo earphones compete against a much more expensive
premier class earphones.

So how good is the cheaper contender? Is the price of the Shure justified?
Well you've just got to keep reading to find out.

FIGHTO ON!

David Versus Goliath
Despite what you'd think, Goliath is actually the Sony in this case, with it's much meatier and bassier sound compared to the Shure.
The Sony's specs state a lower frequency response (6hz compared to 25Hz of the Shure), and it was mostly apparent in music with
solid beats like House, Hip Hop and Pop. But just like in the story of David toppling the Goliath, the heavy bass in the Sony is merely
a facade. The heavy bass is sadly there to cover up the low clarity of it's higher frequencies as well as it's poor isolation.
The Shure on the other hand has great clarity and although its bass may seem lacking in compared to the Sony, it's does a very
equal and balanced job for a single driver unit. I would have desired more bass with the Shure, and despite what I tried with
interchanging the sleeves on the nozzle, the foam sleeve provided the best isolation but still no change in the bass levels.
The Shure has the Sony beat when it comes to sound quality but not as much as you might think.
The heavy bass of the Sony does do a good job covering up it's poor high level clarity, but even without the FBI style cover up,
it does stand pretty well on it's own. Just don't expect the Sony to blow your mind with an Eargasm of any sort.

Comfort
My endurance is not good enough. I am only human. I could not bring myself to listen to the Shure for more than an hour with
those foam sleeves stuck in my ear canal. Which brings me to the conclusion that Expanding Force of Foam Sleeves >> Onso's ears.
It Hurts. Alot. The isolation is also so good that I can hardly hear anything on the outside, including deathly hazards like uncoming cars,
motorcycles... or angry bosses. Because it is the so dangerous to be using the Shure outdoors (it's like a hearing handicap), your
only option is to use it indoors, but why would you? If you were sitting comfortably in your own quiet room at home, why would
you need its superior isolation? So the only viable place I think that the Shure can be used is on the plane, bus or noisy public transport.
The Sony on the hand, does lack very much in sound isolation, but it makes up very much with the ability to rest comfortably over
my ears without being painfully stuck in it and still be able to provide good sound. The Sony provides two options of wearing them,
using the detachable ear hangers, or without them. I think this is a very good idea from sony from a design standpoint, giving consumers
more options on how they would like to wear their products.

The Sony isn't without its flaws. Although they are supposedly closed type earphones, I can't help but hear some level of outside noise.
It's good when you are outdoors, but when you need that extra personal quite space, the Sony doesn't do a good enough job sealing
out interfering noise. And because of that, I can't help but crank the volume on the Sony. I am roughly 2 volume levels up on my iPod
on the Sony compared to the Shure. This could eventually save some battery life but it would be rather minimal, but more importantly,
using the Shure could reduce your chances of permanent hearing loss!

Accessories

The Shure for it's RM650 price tag does come with a pretty load of kit. With SEVEN (count them) sleeves in a range of sizes, it trumps
the Sony in terms of customization. Along with a sturdy semi-hard case, ear wax cleaner and extension cord, it seems that the Shure
has got the Sony beat. But are all those sleeves useful? I think for mostly Asian ears (I have fairly small ears), you could only fit the
small or medium sized foam and flex sleeves.

Aside from the Ear Wax cleaner (ewww), the Sony also comes with everything else that the Shure has. It has a nice plastic case and
fits nicely into the included grey pouch. Along with a slightly longer but similar extension cord, it does good for its price although
lacking in the custom sleeves department. Like the custom sleeves in Shure, I was only able to use the small and medium sizes
and they both didn't fit too well. Small was too small, medium was too big. I do wish Sony would've included some nice foam sleeves
that would not only improved fit, but also isolation like Shure.

Price and Conclusion
Although the Shure SE210 isn't the most 'premier' of the Shure range of products, but it may very well be the best value, high
quality earphones within the reach of an average consumer out there. It does lack the bass of its double or triple driver unit
cousin, but also cost significantly less.
But although I say average consumers, there's nothing 'average' about someone who is willing to fork out RM650 for earphones.
The Sony costs only a mere RM119 and although it's almost SIX times less than the Shure, it does come almost half as
close in terms of overall value and sound quality. It may not be the best in terms of sound clarity, but neither is the Shure
when it came to low frequencies. The Shure may trump the Sony in terms of build quality, accessories and sound isolation,
but it also comes with RM500 markup (you could buy iPods for that price).

Where would I spend my money? I can't say cause I already spent it on both.... DURR
But where should you spend your money? Well, if you had the cash to spare, and would like to squeeze a little bit more
sound out of that iPod, I would recommend without a doubt on getting the Shure. But if you don't mind being half as good,
more comfortable and with more money in your wallet, the Sony is the better choice.

From my sincerely and totally unscientific viewpoint,
Onso

*This users opinions are neither professional nor scientific and should be taken with precaution.
User opinion does not reflect the beliefs and political standing of Lowyat.net and are of his own.
In short, do you own research and don't trust everything you read*

I've been looking at a few Pinnacle Systems products that could help do the job, but I
don't know where can you find Pinnacle reseller here.

Any one can provide me help with this? Or any other alternatives to Pinnacle?

I guess so..
Just a comedic stab at bad advertising by the way, I am no way affiliated with Toyota.. or cough cough Honda.

So I got my annual ASNB report today

[attachmentid=326642]
It's a happy depavalli for me indeed. Although, at only 8% a year it's not growing as good as I'd expected.
I must ask, are there any other funds that I could put my money in that does better than this? I heard Prudential has a Prulink investment fund that's has a good return as well as a Medical Card included, how true is this?

Yeah, like a fool I let the software update install Battery Update 1.3.
Now my MBP's battery is totally screwed up. It shuts itself off even if there is
50% of battery remaining.

Still waiting for a fix from apple.
A warning to all of y'all to read the support forums before install mac-breaking updates like this.

I've been aching to play some UT2004 for some time now, since UT3 is taking forever to be released and even if it is, I doubt my laptop will be able to play it.
I'm wondering if anyone is interested to meet up for some UT2004 action... could either be Bring your own Laptop & Equip affair, or could even meet up
in some cybercafe (if they even have it installed). Every where is like f*ckin' Dota this and CS.

Hello,
Could a smart sifu in the Business Forums enlighten me with the
ways to acquire market research information about a certain product/service that I could sell?

I don't have alot of money thus I can't hire a consulting company to conduct mass surveys
and consumer interviews or even product testing. What other avenues that I could venture into
in order to seek such valueble information?
