Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe made history by becoming the first athlete to run a marathon in under two hours in a competitive race to win the London Marathon.

Sawe broke the world record to complete the London Marathon in 1:59:30.

His time shatters the previous world record, held by the late athlete Kelvin Kiptum, who finished the Chicago Marathon in 2:00:35.

A sub two-hour marathon has long been one of athletics major barriers, comparable to the four-minute mile.

Eliud Kipchoge, also from Kenya, became the first man recorded to run a marathon in under two hours in 2019. However, his time did not count as a record as the race was held under controlled conditions.

On Sawe’s heels for much of the race was Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia, who faded during the marathon’s final stretch to take second place.

Yet Kejelcha also finished the race in under two hours, with a time of 1:59:41.

Asked if he had envisioned breaking a world record, Sawe told the BBC after the race, “We start the race well and approaching the end of finishing the race I was feeling strong.”

“I am so happy,” he added.

Also at the London Marathon on Sunday, Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia set a new women’s world record, crossing the finishing line with a time of 2:15:41, beating her own record set the previous year in London.

Her feed just popped in my media and the thought occured to me...even in Japan she is shown with Halal food and as far as I know...she isnt a Muslim...yet her social media is just full with only Malay cuisine, wearing kebaya and stuff...I dont believe they just eat Malay food...they just presenting the side that earns them money. It just comes across as super fake....kinda exploitative and presenting a false image of themselves.....

Every time I cross over from Singapore to JB I feel JB is very run down. The JB sentral area is very overcrowded and chaotic. Traffic is a mess. Many other parts of JB are run down, many malls are dying or died, the buildings around are frequently run down, traffic is always bad at the city center. The newer places are quite nice but then the older parts are left to rot and not maintained. For such a large city, the public transport system is terrible, the bus are frequently in bad shape, no proper public bus terminal, just overall horrible.

I compare with other cities in Malaysia, KL, Penang, Ipoh, Melaka. I think they are in better shape than JB. JB just gives me that dark, gloomy, broken down, shady kind of feel. It seems like I'm stepping into Gotham city sometimes.

Is JB the worst city in Malaysia or did I miss out on another city in Malaysia which is worse?

Ukraine adopts law paving way for ban of Russia-linked minority church

KYIV, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Ukrainian lawmakers on Tuesday paved the way for a ban against a Russia-linked minority Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) which Kyiv has cast as complicit in Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
A majority of Ukrainians are Orthodox Christians, but the faith is split into one branch traditionally tied to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and an independent church, recognised by the world Orthodox hierarchy since 2019

Ukrainian leaders have accused the Moscow-linked UOC of abetting the Kremlin's 30-month-old assault by spreading pro-Russian propaganda and housing spies.
A bill passed into law in parliament on Tuesday bans the Russian Orthodox Church on Ukrainian territory, and a government commission will assemble a list of "affiliated" organisations whose activities are not allowed. The list is expected to target the UOC specifically.

The decision to ban them would be made by a court.
A total of 265 lawmakers voted in favor of the bill, with 29 against, parliamentarian Yaroslav Zhelezniak said on Telegram.
"Today we have embarked on the inevitable path of cleansing from within the Kremlin's agent network, which has been hiding behind the mask of a religious organisation for decades," lawmaker Roman Lozynskyi said on Facebook.
There was no immediate reaction from the minority church but it has said in the past that it had cut ties with the ROC, which is an open supporter of Moscow's war, after the February 2022 invasion.

Ukrainian officials dispute that claim and have launched dozens of criminal proceedings, including treason charges, against dozens of their clerics. At least one has been sent to Russia as part of a prisoner swap.
The legislation still needs a signature from President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who described the move earlier this month as "aimed at strengthening Ukraine's spiritual independence".
He said the law should guarantee "there will be no manipulation of the Ukrainian Church from Moscow".

Johor-Singapore SEZ: Special passes for ‘industry captains’ could ease manpower and congestion concerns, suggests Johor chief minister

ISKANDAR PUTERI, Johor: Special border passes for company executives could help ease firms’ manpower and congestion concerns ahead of the proposed Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JSSEZ), said Johor’s chief minister.

These passes will allow senior management officials of firms which are part of the SEZ to travel between Singapore and southern Johor efficiently, said Mr Onn Hafiz Ghazi on Thursday (Aug 15).

“We are trying to accelerate the success of the JSSEZ and (part of that is facilitating) movement of goods and services, mainly the movement of people,” he added.

“We need to have special passes for captains of industries when they travel between Singapore and Johor.”

Mr Onn Hafiz was speaking during an Invest Johor event at Forest City in front of more than 600 delegates, some of whom were company representatives from Singapore. The event was organised by RHB Bank.

He did not provide any details on whether these passes would allow travellers to clear immigration via a special lane or priority clearance.

These concerns generally related to sourcing skilled and technical workers as well as congestion at the land crossings delaying the movement of people and goods.

The chief minister acknowledged that alleviating congestion and increasing the pool of skilled workers in Johor are part of “drastic changes” the state government is pushing for to maximise potential of economic cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore.

He also outlined upcoming developments that would also improve transportation around and within southern Johor.

This included the widening of the North-South Highway in Johor from four lanes to six by 2025 and a public transport network in Johor Bahru town which will be integrated with the Johor-Singapore RTS Link.

In January, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the JS-SEZ, which is expected to offer both fiscal and non-fiscal incentives such as tax breaks and easier travel between the two countries.

The MOU also outlined that the SEZ would facilitate passport-free travel between Singapore and Johor which include the use of a QR-code system for immigration clearance and digitised processes for cargo clearance.

Speaking to CNA on the sidelines of the Invest Johor event, RHB Bank group chief executive officer Mohd Rashid Mohamad stressed that policies which ease movement of people and goods, such as the special border passes are “very key” to the long-term viability of the JS-SEZ, and Johor as an investment destination.

During his speech at the event, Mr Onn Hafiz said that government officials from both Singapore and Malaysia would attend a workshop from Aug 28 to Aug 30 to discuss the details of the SEZ agreement.

He added that the attorney-general chambers from both countries will then meet in September and that the final agreement is expected to be signed and announced in the fourth quarter of 2024, during the Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat.

“Even though the agreement will be signed by the end of the year, we are taking actions to ensure we will have a smooth roll-out,” he added.

CNA understands that the leaders’ retreat is slated to be held in Singapore in December 2024.

RHB Bank’s Mr Mohd Rashid told CNA that the developments in which the SEZ proposal was being discussed by both countries was a signal that there is commitment from both to push through the agreement.

“It takes two to tango. Now it’s not just Johor and Malaysia, it’s also Singapore realising that it's a good time for us to work together,” said Mr Mohd Rashid.

“There is now a lot of room to collaborate, rather than to work in silos. The conversation now is different from what it was three to four years ago,” he added.

Mr Onn Hafiz said in a fireside chat after his speech that the JS SEZ proposal is being discussed at an opportune moment when the “stars are aligned” and that there is political will from both sides to see through the negotiations.

“There is political will that the Johor special economic zone can happen now, maybe it's because the new Yang Di Pertuan Agong happens to be from Johor. We have the royal backing from the Johor palace for this SEZ (to come to fruition),” he added.
