LTE Repeater/Booster

Hi Peoploids,

Not sure if this posting should be on this forum or Telco Talk, but here goes:

Anyone here have any feedback on the usefulness of LTE/mobile network repeaters (or sometimes known as boosters)?

Basically a setup with a directional external antenna, a repeater/booster box specific to one band (although some Triband boxes are also available) and an internal antenna.

Fed up with trying to get a decent signal at home. This is also the problem at the in-laws house and it seems at a few of my colleagues as well. Waiting for the Telco to fix it is a waste of time. If it works it will be worth the RM 200 to Rm350 to address this once and for all.

Anyone knows how to change the router admin and user passwords, from the default for both?

Isn't absolutely critical, but the paranoid side of me just screams 'bad idea! bad idea!'

Recommendation for a repair shop in LowYat Plaza

Yo peoploids,

I have an aging Acer Aspire 5741G notebook that is still functioning fine with the exception of constantly overheating. I believe it's just the thermal paste failing after so long. However, instead of trying to DIY it I would like to send it to a shop to do it for me.

Any suggestions at Low Yat Plaza?

Thanks in advance!

Dish washer - recommendations/caveats?

Hi forummers,

Background:

- maid left, too costly/risky to bring another in.
- 3 adults & 2 pre-schoolers at home
- cooks 2 meals a day pretty consistently

Seriously considering getting a dishwasher (a 12-place free-standing model) to free up the approx 1 hour a day we spend doing dishes (for the 2 meals).

Any suggestions/caveats? The Beko & Elba models look interesting.... both about RM2,500.

Thanks in advance!

<WTS> Fujifilm X-E1 (Silver) Body only - SOLD

Item(s): Fujifilm X-E1 (Silver) - body only

For those who don't know about this camera, suggest you look at DPReview's detailed article on it. Bottom line is: this is a FANTASTIC camera for the size & price, capable of taking STUNNING photos, especially of people (skin tone). Does really well in comparatively low light (very acceptable grain all the way down to 3200 ISO). Takes nose-bleed sharp photos if you use a quality lens. Focus is tack-sharp but has some problems in low-light situations and fast-moving subjects... you can mitigate this with some planning & pre-focusing.

Package includes: Camera body, original battery & charger, body cap, original strap, box (please note box is for the kit; however, *not* selling the lens), purchase receipt

Price: SOLD

Warranty: expired - original Fujifilm Malaysia. You can of course test it out to your heart's content before closing the deal.

Dealing method: COD

Location: Klang Valley

Contact method/details: PM please
---

Item(s) condition: Cosmetic : 9/10 (very minor scratches on certain corners; please refer to photos)
Functional: 10/10 (minimal removal of lens, always facing down to reduce/eliminate dust from entering the camera)

Picture: *PLEASE NOTE: Sale is for BODY ONLY! Apologise for including the lens in the photos.... didn't want to introduce dust into the camera
[attachmentid=6223764]
[attachmentid=6223766]
[attachmentid=6223778]
[attachmentid=6223786]

Reason for sale: Upgrading to an X-T10 to improve taking photos of my twin toddlers

Hi peoploids!

Was wondering if anyone has experience installing/using these made-in-China GPS tracker devices, eg. TK103, TK103, GPS106. They are priced within the RM200 to RM500 region, and provide features such as tracking by SMS or data, control via SMS, and some even have additional components that can cut off the oil pump and/or power systems via an SMS.

Any idea who installs these things?

TIA!

YTL Yes Rebates: the ugly facts ... CAVEAT EMPTOR

Forumers,

If you are considering YTL Yes, you would do well to read this....

What their website says:

QUOTE

Yes data rebates are given for data usage.
So far so great

Just to report....

Got Yes 3 days ago.... using it at two locations (Bangsar and Lake Fields Sg Besi -- near the Selangor Turf Club race course) ... signal is between 3 to 4 bar pretty much anywhere throughout the house.

At 4 bar in Bangsar:

Using Huddle because I was told by the sales team at Lot 10 that the dongle is not compatible to Linux... their technical team had tested, they said. Couldn't provide me with a test dongle, even though I brought my notebook there.... A bit disappointing, as the more sophisticated desktop distros like Ubuntu have really strong compatibility with pretty much every device eg. works off any USB Wifi and 3G modem I'bve thrown at it.... no 3rd party drivers needed. (Lucid and Maverick).

But just an interesting find: the Huddle is primarily meant for Wifi linkup (it's configured for it out-of-the-box) but also comes with a USB cable which can be used as a charging source, as well as for Windoze cabled linkup. I plugged it in for charging and lo & behold.... it links up flawlessly to Linux/Ubuntu! Once again, no driver install.

Makes me wonder if I had only been given the opportunity to test the USB dongle, might have been able to save RM300.... (well kinda, I signed up for the RM1,199 package, so technically the Huddle was free).

Summary: I echo the findings of this thread:

- the best performance wireless broadband currently available in Malaysia.... honestly, I think very competitive even if compared worldwide
- like all wireless broadband, latency is not good... around 150ms to 250ms is usual. Hardcore FPS gamers can give this a miss.
- cost is cheap if you are a very low volume user.... I would say under 2GB a month.... i don't think any other offering can compare price/performance at these volumes. Even Screamyx is more expensive (eg. RM60 for the combo package, and that only gets you a very unreliable 512Kbps )
- cost is bonkers expensive if you download high media for a living... a few movies/series a month OK, but all those pirated DVD guys can give this a miss.

I calculate the breakeven compared to Unifi (VIP10 since the speed is comparable) is around 8.6GB per month... my calculation:

(Rm199 for Unifi VIP10 / Rm0.03 per MB ) + 30% discount for exceeding 4GB per month

That's equivalent to 25 TV series episodes OR 11 normal rez movies or 2 HD movies. Other than that, if you are talking browsing, listening to broadcast music, downloading the odd file or even ISO image, I cannot imagine touching 8 GB a month.

I am still using DiGi SmartPlan for my mobile broadband package (too in love with my Android phone to downgrade to anything else, solly) and Yes has yet to prove its stability in the long run, but until then, KUDOS to YTL!!

Peoploids,

The HTC Aria sold by AT&T in the US is locked to only get applications from Android Market, not allowing "third party" applications to be installed.

Is this the case for Digi's SmartPlan package for the HTC Aria and/or Legend?

TIA.

--
lowkl

What modem to get?

Peoploids,

I'm gearing up to subscribe to DiGi BB, so now I need to choose whether to:

- buy a modem off-the-shelf (and enjoy the rebate);
- get the modem provided by DiGi

So, what should I do?

.....Not too heavy a user, so will probably start with the Discover package, then move up to the Explore once I confirm the service quality.

Thanks in advance!

--
bob

Wireless Broadband Shootout!

Peoploids of the LowYat.NET persuasion,

How about we put all the wireless broadband services to a side-by-side, same location, same time test? A good ol' SHOOTOUT!

To do this, we need to rally up some volunteers to go to a few locations (let's not be too ambitious, Klang Valley area to start with) with a standardised suite of bandwidth tests, and run them at the same time.

The results then posted to LowYat.NET for all to see.....

To start with, need the following:

1) Indication of interest from the community (if no interest, let's shelve the stoopid idea right now)
2) Volunteers to run around with their notebooks and wireless connections
3) Recommended locations
4) Recommended bandwidth tests/applications

Your thots, ladies & gentlemen?

GMail client over Digi on K750i

Anyone got the Gmail client to connect over a Digi connection? I use a SE K750i; connecting via browser is no problem, but would like to use the client application as it is more efficient. When I try I get,

"Network Unavailable: This program requires a data connection. Please contact your carrier, or visit the Gmail FAQ on your computer for more info."

I requested and got the data connection settings directly from Digi; this gives me
- DiGi WAP
- DiGi MMS
- DiGi Streaming

set up as data accounts.

JimmyIM also fails.

Any clues??

TIA.

--
bob
