16 most polluted Johor river

UTM don names Johor’s 16 most polluted rivers

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Litter, rubber tyres and tiny pieces of plastics dumped by unscrupulous businesses, industries and households are choking Johor’s rivers to death, Berita Harian reported today.

Citing a senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Faizuan Abdulla, the Malay daily reported the 16 most polluted rivers are in the state’s industrial hub of Pasir Gudang and named them as Sungai Kopok, Kim Kim, Tukang Batu, Laloh, Buluh, Perembi, Masai, Rekoh, Plentong, Tebrau, Stulang, Skudai, Danga, Melayu, Perepat and Pentas.

The accumulated trash in the rivers form mini islands of rubbish on the banks which then release a thick, foul and toxic odour as they bake under the tropical sun and become more polluted as they flow out to sea, killing all underwater life within the vicinity.

“An analysis of the water sample in the Straits of Johor revealed it contained heavy toxic metals, which include lead, chromium, cadmium, arsenic and nickel,” Faizuan was quoted saying.

According to the news report, there are 1,780 commercial industries, 1,532 small and medium businesses as well as 172 sewage treatment plants along the 46km stretch of Sungai Skudai alone.

The most affected rivers are Sungai Perembi, Sungai Buluh and Sungai Tukang Batu.

“All of these factors are endangering the marine life in the river that feeds into the larger river system.

“The continued pollution of these rivers will have caused the mussels growing in these rivers to be nearly extinct,” the UTM lecturer was quoted saying further.

In March 13, 111 schools throughout Pasir Gudang were forced to shut due to high levels of river pollution that also released toxic chemicals in the air and was spread by the wind around the district, causing residents to sicken.

Despite a clean-up, in June schools and education centres with some 20,000 students and teachers within a 6km radius of Taman Mawar have been ordered closed following the second wave of air pollution in Pasir Gudang.

Faizuan said he has been studying and researching the rivers for eight years and deduced that rapid development around the area of Selat Johor have contributed to the pollution which sees no end in sight.

“I analysed the water quality in Sungai Skudai, Danga, Melayu, Perepat and Pendas specifically and found waste from factories, sewage plants, domestic cleaning waste water and rubbish in these rivers.

“This will in turn funnel into the many river channels in the area compounding the issue,” the lecturer told Berita Harian.

https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/201...-rivers/1773633

Pinewood, maker of James Bond, leaves Malaysia

Pinewood Group, maker of James Bond films, parts ways with Iskandar Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 — The collaboration between famed British recording studio Pinewood Group and Iskandar Malaysia Studios (IMS) that created a multi-million ringgit, giant 100,000 square feet movie-making facility in Johor has ended after 10 years.

Pinewood said their partnership ended by mutual agreement.

“Pinewood Group’s collaboration with IMS comes to a close by mutual agreement, following a 10-year partnership where Pinewood provided consultancy, brand and marketing services.

“With the initial objectives of the collaboration achieved — including the development of the Studios in Malaysia — both parties will now focus on the next phase of their respective businesses,” the British studio famous for the James Bond movie franchise said in a statement on its website.

It added that the joint venture known as Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios is now known as Iskandar Malaysia Studios effective yesterday.

The studio in Johor was Pinewood’s only Asian filmmaking facility and was borne from an agreement with sovereign investment arm, Khazanah Nasional Berhad with the aim of making Malaysia a regional entertainment production hub and creating 10,000 jobs locally.

It officially opened in 2014 and was first used for the production of the original Netflix series Marco Polo.

The Pakatan Harapan government had set aside RM30 million for filmmaking incentives under its Budget 2019, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng announced last November 2.

Lim added that Khazanah Nasional would provide an additional RM100 million specifically for the production of films at the Pinewood studios in Iskandar, Johor as part of the government’s efforts to grow the digital economy.

Without Johor, the Pinewood Group now has six studios worldwide. Three of them are in the UK, one in Atlanta, the US, one in Toronto, Canada and the last is in the Dominican Republic.

Hollywood entertainment portal Variety reported yesterday that Pinewood’s next phase will be expanding its UK studios, with the one located in Shepperton to become the British hub for Netflix.

Variety reported that the Pinewood Group has since been bought by European real estate firm Aermont Capital headquartered in London for £323.3 million.

https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/201...alaysia/1770686

‘Most Pasir Gudang factories have broken the law’

JOHOR BARU: Most chemical factories in Pasir Gudang have committed offences under the Environment Quality Act, according to State Health, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar.

He said out of the 90 factories inspected by the authorities, 81 were found to have committed at least one offence under the Act.

“The Department of Environment (DoE) has issued 71 compounds, four notices and six warnings to them to cease operations.

“The inspection is ongoing,” he told a press conference yesterday.

There are at least 252 chemical factories in Pasir Gudang.

Mohd Khuzzan said the authorities were still baffled by what was causing students in Pasir Gudang to experience vomiting and dizziness despite some of the detectors showing no toxic chemicals in the air.

He said the 85 detection teams deployed at the affected schools on Monday found no major chemicals in the air.

“In some schools it was zero, but there were still cases of students with the symptoms.

“Even all the urine and blood samples taken from the students have turned out to be negative.

“However, we will still continue the detection at the 85 schools,” he said, adding that some of the students were affected more than once.

Mohd Khuzzan said on Monday that a total of 310 students and three teachers from 31 schools had the symptoms.

Out of that number, 127 were sent to nearby clinics and three warded.

He added that there were 11 cases from seven schools until 11am yesterday.

He said the Health Ministry was continuing its psychological support to the schools involved.

Mohd Khuzzan added that all 111 schools in Pasir Gudang would be adopted by the chemical factories as part of their corporate social responsibility and would be equipped with a gas detector.

Police will continue with the four roadblocks set up around Pasir Gudang.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Ismail Dollah said 60 officers from four police stations had been assigned to man the roadblocks.

“The roadblocks are to monitor and prevent any attempts by irresponsible industries or individuals to transfer materials that can harm public safety,” he said.

Read more at https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2019...aIjaW1PSYMCE.99

Malaysia voted 25th sexiest in the world

Malaysia voted 25th most sexiest nation in the world

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia takes another crown on the global stage, and this time, believe it or not, for the 25th sexiest nation of the world. Personalities like Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, actor Henry Golding and model Amber Chia have perhaps placed us on the world map.

According to international travel website Big 7 Media, 1.5 million people across the globe were surveyed to get an insight into where the world’s most beautiful people were located.

It noted that survey respondents were given no further specifications of the term "sexy", hence, the interpretation was left up to the respondents.

The survey placed Malaysians at the 25th spot in the world, ahead of the Americans (45th), Germans (44th), Swedish (38th), Thais (36th), Russians (33rd), Chinese (31st) and Iranians (26th), among others.

Taking the top spot are the Ukrainians, followed by the Danish and Filipinos at second and third place, respectively.

The survey said Ukrainians have a "striking appearance", thus, have easily topped its poll for 2019.

The poll added that the impressive score of the Danish people’s sexiness proved that "Denmark was beautiful in more ways than one".

It said Filipino took the third spot, as it had many famous personalities such as professional boxer Manny Pacquiao, together with singer-songwriter Bruno Mars, adding that many Miss World participants which have come out from the Philippines have made the country a top scorer too.

Rounding up the top 10 were Brazilians (4th), Australians (5th), South Africans (6th), Italians (7th), Armenians (8th), English (9th) and Canadians (10th).

The least "sexiest" nation in the world went to the Irish.

Read more at https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2019...ubwKlG54sx4Z.99

Almost 500 Pasir Gudang schools close

Almost 500 Pasir Gudang schools, educational institutions to shutter temporarily

JOHOR BARU, June 24 — A total of 475 schools and educational institutions in Pasir Gudang have been ordered to close starting tomorrow until Thursday amid air pollution.

Johor Education Department director Azman Adnan said the number involved 111 government primary and secondary schools, three higher educational institutions, 14 private and international schools and 347 private pre-schools.

“All educational institutions have been ordered to close in an effort to address the issue of pollution sources by the authorities,” he said in a statement here tonight.

Azman also urged principals and teachers to immediately inform all students, teachers, parents and staff under their control to take note of the closure.

He added that the state Education Department will constantly monitor and assist schools to ensure the well-being of their students.

“Let us pray for this incident to be resolved soon and the schools to be able to operate normally for the good of the students,” said Azman.

Earlier, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal said a total of 75 students have been referred to Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI) today after 15 schools were affected by the pollution.

“Four victims are still seeking treatment, but they are in stable condition,” he said during a media conference at the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council indoor stadium here today.

The students from various schools in Pasir Gudang had complained of breathing difficulty and vomiting.

On June 22, three schools and two preschools were ordered to be closed for two days, starting as a safety measure following possible air pollution in the Taman Mawar area here

In March, more than 4,000 people, mainly children, fell ill after a toxic fume incident in Sungai Kim Kim. The fallout from the incident also saw the temporary closure of 111 schools in the Pasir Gudang district.

However, authorities have been quick to deny that the two incidents were connected.

https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/201...tempora/1765201
Tony Stark’s lakeside cabin is up for rent!

AFTER suffering a huge defeat at the hand of Thanos (sorry, spoiler alert) at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Iron Man a.k.a. Tony Stark retreated to a small lakeside cabin to mourn and brood.

While a galactic loss would be hard to relate to, who could say no to such as quiet retreat. Sometimes it’s just a really bad day and we want to escape to another place to recollect ourselves.

Well, the good news is Tony Stark’s beautiful cabin is a real thing and is up for rent in the US state of Georgia!

This discovery was made by Reddit user u/Brayud, who found the cabin on Airbnb. To prove that it’s the same cabin, he posted a picture of the front door next to a screenshot of the final scene in Avengers: Endgame in the same thread.

The catch? You’ll have to fork out a few thousand ringgit just to spend a night there.

The good news is that you may be able to spread the cost because the cabin can host up to six guests.

For almost US$335 (RM1,394), your gang gets to enjoy this cabin that comes with three bedrooms and bathrooms.

However, devout Marvel fans may be disappointed to find that the interior is not the same as the one seen in the movies.

The silver lining is knowing that the famous line “I love you 3,000” uttered by Tony Stark’s daughter happened in the four walls of this cabin.

Eagle-eyed Reddit users also pointed out that the cabin was more recently featured in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

https://www.thesundaily.my/style-life/all-t...r-rent-KL962950

Ex-aide says Zuraida ‘good boss’, but quit because no confidence in Pakatan

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Ahmad Soffian Mohd Shariff finally disclosed that his reason for resigning as Zuraida Kamaruddin’s press secretary was linked to his lawyer wife’s abrupt removal from the ongoing inquest of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

Ahmad Soffian said the Attorney General’s instruction for his wife, Syazlin Mansor, to withdraw from representing the Fire and Rescue Department and the Housing and Local Government Ministry in Adib’s inquest, was a contributing factor even as he praised his ex-boss Zuraida, who is the housing and local government minister and PKR vice-president.

“Zuraida is a good boss. She is the best minister in the Pakatan Harapan Cabinet,” he told reporters here after Syazlin held a press conference.

“It’s not because of KPKT,” he said, referring to the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

“I just don’t feel confident in the Pakatan Harapan government.

“There are a lot of things which I felt should not have happened in Malaysia Baharu,” he added, citing for example the problems surrounding the PTPTN public student loan scheme.

Ahmad Soffian quit as Zuraida’s press secretary on June 10, about a month after he took up the job.

https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/201...pakatan/1761435
