Different source, Different quality?

Hi guys,

Need some advise.
I read somewhere that in order to get the best out of your system you need to have good setup from the source until the output (ie speakers). Meaning you have to have a good CD player or even better DVD-Audio or SACD player going into a good amp and then speakers if you want to have a good sound quality. If you have good amp and speakers but source is just mp3 files of low quality then you won't get the sound that you want.

But how different is the sound coming from a good source, say an SACD, compared to a low quality mp3 (say from an iPod) going into a set of good (say hi-end) set of amps and speakers?

Say I bought 20-30k worth of HU, amps and speakers but my source is mostly from iPod, then might as well use cap ayam (maybe too extreme) or use lower mid-end stuff instead if the sound produced is similar?

Saw somewhere a saying - "crap in, crap out". Would this apply to hi-end products? Will it somehow upgrade the sound?

I know some hi-end HUs don't even provide inputs for iPod/iPhone but cost a bomb. Don't think is because they wanted to cut cost.

What do u guys think?

aBe
