Sindiket kurang ajar

Sindiket kurang ajar

Sumber: Harian Metro

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-49287494

Trump delays some tariffs on Chinese imports

The US is delaying imposing tariffs on some imports from China until 15 December because of "health, safety, national security and other factors".

The products include mobile phones, laptops, video game consoles, some toys, computer monitors, and certain footwear and clothing.

The surprise news from the United States Trade Representative officesparked a rally in share prices.

Other items facing a 10% tariff will go ahead as planned on 1 September.

US President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters, said that the delay was in part to avoid hitting US shoppers this Christmas.

The USTR's announcement was released minutes after China's Ministry of Commerce said Vice Premier Liu He had conducted a phone call with US trade officials.

US-China trade war in 300 words
Technology investors welcomed news of the exemptions, pushing an index of chip stocks up 2.8%. Retailers and industrial shares also rose, with General Electric up 4.4%.

On Wall Street, the three main share indexes were up more than 2% at one stage. The Dow Jones and S&P 500 finished 1.4% ahead, while the tech-dominated Nasdaq finished up 1.9% - led by a 4% rise in Apple.

In the UK, stocks exposed to global trade also rose, with miner Glencore closing up 2.3%.

Mr Trump said on 1 August he would impose a 10% tariff on $300bn of Chinese goods, blaming China for not following through on promises to buy more American agricultural products.

He also personally criticised Chinese President Xi Jinping for failing to do more to stem sales of the synthetic opioid fentanyl amid an opioid overdosing crisis in the US.

But in a tweet on Tuesday, Mr Trump hinted that he was expecting something in return, suggesting that China's failure to "buy big" from US farmers could be about to change.

Singapore second-quarter GDP falls 3.3%, cuts 2019 growth forecast

Singapore slashed its full-year economic growth forecast on Tuesday, as global conditions were seen worsening and final second-quarter data showed the economy shrank 3.3% on the quarter.

The government cut its forecast range for the city-state’s gross domestic product to zero to 1% from its previous estimate for 1.5% to 2.5%.

Economists in a Reuters poll had expected the final reading to show a 2.9% fall in GDP.

The second quarter’s 3.3% contraction was slightly smaller than the 3.4% decline seen in the government’s advance estimate on a seasonally adjusted and annualized quarter-on-quarter basis, but firmed bets a recession may be around the corner.

Economists in a Reuters poll had expected the final reading to show a 2.9% fall.

“Looking ahead, GDP growth in many of Singapore’s key final demand markets in the second half of 2019 is expected to slow from, or remain similar to, that recorded in the first half,” the Ministry of Trade and Industry said in a statement on Tuesday.

A central bank official said after the data that it was not considering an off-cycle policy meeting. It is next scheduled to meet in October, where it is widely expected to ease policy.

The city-state’s annual gross domestic product expanded 0.1% in April-June from a year earlier, in line with the advance estimate of 0.1% but below poll expectations of 0.2%.

Singapore, often seen as a bellwether for global growth, has been hit hard by the Sino-U.S. trade war which has disrupted world supply chains in a blow to business investment and corporate profits.

“Obviously, it feels like the storm is coming if you look at the whole macro economic fundamentals softening,” said Selena Ling, head of treasury and strategy at OCBC Bank, who also cited a recent round of monetary policy easing by Asian central banks.

New Zealand, India and Thailand all cut interest rates last week, signaling major concerns about the outlook for economic growth. Last month, the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates for the first time since 2008.

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/13/singapore-e...9-forecast.html

Rafidah said I'll be the first to fail

http://www.988.com.my/news/190806-rafidah-...xsFD1gG9Jgzislc
bing translate

She stressed that the government should not force anyone to learn calligraphy. "I'll be the first to fail." I dare to challenge you, and you will fail.

"

Rafida, who is also a former minister of international trade and industry, told the forum in Bucheng today that she had contacted Education Minister Ma Zhili on the matter. "I've sent a message to (Education Minister) Ma Zhili that it's better not to make it a subject.

"

She believes that the existing education system is already full of absurd policies, learning more than learning more than one calligraphy. "Don't use these unnecessary and pointless subjects to burden you.

"

From next year, the Ministry of Education will include the claw-yi calligraphy in the small four-country language course, rather than a new "subject", and will not be included in the scope of examinations and assessments. The Ministry of Education yesterday also released a "frequently asked questions" question and answer, stating that the Ministry of Education will not only implement the introduction class of Clawyi calligraphy in the fourth grade of primary schools next year, but will also be followed by the same teaching for the fifth and sixth primary schools in 2021 and 2022.

It is rare for the social media giant to publicly link such activities to a government.

Saudi Arabia has so far made no public comments on the issue.

He added: "They also frequently shared criticism of neighbouring countries including Iran, Qatar and Turkey, and called into question the credibility of Al-Jazeera news network and Amnesty International.

"Although the people behind this activity attempted to conceal their identities, our review found links to individuals associated with the government of Saudi Arabia."
