My experience with a scammer

TL;DR

1. I was selling my watches.
2. Scammer contacted me and agreed to buy upon meet up.
3. Scammer paid deposited a cheque into my account. It looks just like a confirmed transaction on your banking app except for the word "cheque". The cheque would bounce in the next few days.
4. Scammer arranges a runner to pick up the watches.
5. I realized it was a scam when I saw it was a transaction based on a cheque, but then tried to let it play out to see what happens (see the screenshots).

Full story:

So couple weeks back I posted listings of two of my watches on Facebook marketplace.

Today, a purported buyer reached out. I think the screenshots below tell the full story of how it panned out. The yellow smiley bit is when I realized it's a scam. But before that I really did think it was a genuine buyer, bastard even made me clean the watches, set the time, and put them nicely into the boxes.

When I first realized it's a scam I called him out on it but on hindsight I should have let it play out. So I tried reversing my stance and the fucker fell for it. So I went to the agreed meeting location and told him the number of a random car parked there.

I was hoping he would come himself but he called me to say his "staff" would come instead. This was a Chinese guy who couldn't speak good English. A real sohai type on the phone. I was observing nearby and an old couple turned up and looked at the sacrificial car I used. They didn't look like scammers, likely mules or grab delivery drivers the scammer called to pick up the stuff. I pity them, truly. Collateral damage.

Of course, if I handed over the watches. The cheque would not have cleared and the transaction would be voided.

Things I learned:
1. Banks are clearly not doing enough to prevent this. Once the scammer deposits the cheque, the total amount in your savings account goes up and the transaction is shown. There is no indication whatsoever that the transaction is pending and the total amount is floating. As a test I tried transferring my entire fund into another account I have within the bank and it came as no surprise that the limit I could transfer is the total amount shown less the fraudulent cheque amount. Banks really need to indicate clearly the amount is floating and not cleared. See the last photo below - the total on the top includes the uncleared cheque. The transaction itself is listed in green, looking like a confirmed transaction.

2. Big red flags. The biggest is obviously that the scammer deposited the cheque a full 40 minutes before the meet up. Which idiot would pay such a large sum before even seeing the goods? I think the usual scam would have had the transaction taking place during the meetup, so the seller would see the money going into the account but not necessarily having the awareness to see that it's a cheque.
3. Other red flags. Scammer negotiated but not as much as other buyers I've transacted with before. Also perhaps too good to be true to have the same buyer interested in not one but both of my watches.

Scammer's number is +6011-6384 6682 (my friend confirmed it's a burner number though).
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/18xUzzZS7f/
(But who knows if this is a real account or a hacked account. )

Update:

LOL, the cheque bounced and CIMB actually charged me 5 bucks because the scammer's account is invalid. Ludicrous.

Where to find Plumber's Putty

My kitchen sink drainer went kaput and usually I call a plumber to fix it. They quoted me RM250 which I find ridiculous. So I thought about getting it replaced myself.

Seems easy enough and I did it in 15 mins. However, instructions online said to use plumber's putty to seal the drainer but I couldn't find it in hardware shops at all. I got a normal putty which I suppose is meant as a filler for dry cracks and such. It still works mostly but when I pour water in the sink I notice it starts leaking slightly.

So my question is where can I find this elusive plumber's putty in Malaysia? Or is there another alternative to this that is not an adhesive that will bond to my sink?

Thank you.

https://www.thespruce.com/how-to-replace-a-...trainer-2718792

Quick release lugs with flange

So I've started ordering custom leather straps more frequently recently, and they come with these quick release lugs that are just so convenient for swapping out straps whenever I feel like it.

The thing is, I was talking to the strap maker, and he says there are cases where the knob for the quick release breaks off, and there is no proper way of removing the lugs then, apart from using a plier to break them off (in the process possibly ruin the strap and damage the watch case).

I noticed that Delugs uses an improved version of the QR lugs, where the knobs are welded and even if it breaks, the other side of the lug has flanges so one could still resort to using a standard spring bar tool to remove the lug.

They sell it for USD5 per pair, which isn't quite exorbitant but certainly isn't cheap. I'm wondering if anyone knows a seller that sells these improved QR lugs? I searched on AliExpress, shopee, etc but couldn't find any.

https://delugs.com/blogs/news/new-and-impro...ase-spring-bars

Dry clean service

Hey guys. I'm just wondering what's the best dry cleaning service in the KL area. I've only been to Pressto which I suppose is alright, but I'm also looking for a place where they press a jacket correctly – without creasing the lapel that then eliminates the lapel roll.

Thanks.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Wow. I watched this yesterday, after one of my favourite movie reviewers praised it to high heavens. Don't read his review though if you haven't seen it – his reviews usually contains some spoilers.

Anyway this stars Michelle Yeoh and starts off as a frenetically paced family drama before it becomes utterly unhinged, and yet miraculously coherent with a very strong emotional core that powers through it.

You guys just need to see this. It's totally bonkers, with both infantile and high concept humour, broad multiverse scope and intimate family drama, laughs and tears, all in one. Believe me.

I was really reminded of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind here – both emotional stories about love and family told through a heavily sci-fi-tinged lens, where weird, funky stuff happens that threaten to disintegrate any focus but yet somehow manages to not just work, but refine and concentrate the emotional theme that courses through their veins. This has more wacky stuff that's probably more mainstream though, and has a lighter tone overall... except in parts where the feels really kick in.

Time will tell if it is as good as ESOTSM, but I certainly can't remember being that elated by a movie at the cinema for a long, long time.

PS: if anything, this movie shows that however decent Marvel makes their movies and multiverses, it's still very much confined by its comic book trappings. This on the other hand, is totally unencumbered by anything and flourishes from start to end.

PPS: I was deeply unsettled by the familiarity of Waymond in the first 20 minutes before coming to the suspicion that HE MUST BE SHORT ROUND FROM TEMPLE OF DOOM. It was the first thing I googled after the movie ended. Unbelievable. His voice has barely changed.

MoH’s Actual Deaths stats are misleading

I think on the day that the daily number of deaths breached 592, the COVIDNOW website added a new stat in the daily deaths chart, called actual deaths. This is supposedly, according to KJ, a more reflective number of the actual current situation.

Look at the pic below - the 7-day average of the “actual” deaths is 99.

Bullshit.

Now look at the data here: https://github.com/MoH-Malaysia/covid19-pub...hs_malaysia.csv

Scroll down and see the third column. 4 actual deaths on 12 Sept. The 7-day average is 99 indeed. But they are pretty meaningless numbers. Why? Because there is likely way way higher number of deaths that were unreported or not confirmed for 12 Sept - these deaths will be confirmed in the coming days, weeks, months. So looking at the 7-day average is extremely misleading.

[WTA] 2-pin cable extension

I have a wall mounted TV bracket with a in-wall tunnel for cables running to the TV console below. However my TV cable is not long enough to reach the socket in the TV cabinet console. Does anyone know where I can find an extension like the below?

Thank you.

Groundwork / Makeover Guys interior design

I recently took keys to my new condo and have been meaning to engage an ID firm to design and renovate my unit.

I came across the Makeover Guys (https://www.themakeover.my/) and they purportedly specialize in renovating your unit quickly for the purposes of renting. My understanding is that they try to do this based off design templates they have, renovate quickly, so that the quality is decent without breaking the bank.

They have a sister company, Groundwork (https://www.groundwork.my/) which also does ID and renovation projects for those who want to stay in their units (not for renting). How they operate however is still quite similar to Makeover Guys -- they have a number of themes and templates you can choose from, with some minimal customisation allowed. Once you choose your theme/template, their ID team will design and get it done within 2 months or so. The end design will fit the theme you chose, but not everything will be what you see in the sample photos, as they choose the wallpapers/fittings/furniture based on the theme which may not necessarily be the exact same items you see in photos. For quick turnover, they do not allow you to go back and forth with the ID team on specific items (so essentially you won't know how certain things will look like until you step into the completed unit). My understanding is that Groundwork costs more than Makeover Guys because it is for own stay purposes, so they have a more evolved sense of design with allegedly better quality materials.

(Groundwork also allows you to design your unit from scratch, without referencing templates, but this costs a lot more.)

My question is, has anyone used Groundwork or the Makeover Guys before? The templates provided by Groundwork are quite nice, and the high level estimate they provided to me seemed reasonable. But I can't find any reviews about them and so hopefully some of you can shed some light here to the quality of their work.

Thanks.

Penny Loafers in Dark Brown Suede (TLB Mallorca)

Item(s): TLB Mallorca Penny Loafers in dark brown suede. UK7 size but runs big because it has a roomy fit. Shoes come in a half leather half rubber sole, which is very comfortable. Suede is of high quality, similar to Carmina. Caress it with your finger and behold the iridescence. It is also a nice dark brown colour -- not too light but not dark such that it looks black. I really wished it fit me.

Package includes: shoes, shoe box, shoe bags.

Price: RM 1,100. I got this discounted price off Yeossal's (Singapore) Black Friday sales at SGD 358. I'm not including any of the shipping charges or taxes/duties. You can try it on first if you're interested. I need to find a buyer in the next few days otherwise I will choose the option of returning them to Singapore for a full refund.

Dealing method: COD only, at KL / PJ / Taman Desa area.

Contact method/details: PM me to get contact details.

Item(s) conditions: Brand new and unworn. No scuffs on sole.

Reason for sale: Bought it online and unfortunately size is too big.

Maxis exorbitant charges

I know there's the RM38/day roaming plan. I don't need it.

I did however receive a call while in Taiwan and accidentally answered for a whole or 2 seconds. I was charged RM 10.

I did send two SMSes while in Singapore. I was charged RM 5 for each SMS.

I find the charges beyond distasteful. It's daylight robbery. Called them and they agreed to waive the incoming call charge but maintained that the SMS charges are fair and there's nothing they can do.

Not too long ago I remember it was RM1 per SMS, which I thought was fair. To increase this to RM5...is crazy.

Not to mention their local 4G coverage has been shit for the past 3-4 months. The phone signal bar shows full strength but there are way too many intermittent drop in data coverage, even in the heart of KL. A few of my friends have mentioned the same thing.

Maybe it's time to port out to another operator...
