Advice for friend - From Finance to Medicine

Hey there guys,

I have a friend who studied finance due to choosing to pursue the commerce stream back in high school. She took UEC and during her junior high school years she was required to take up physics, biology and chemistry as well and she was actually pretty good at Bio and Chem, but unsure why she decided to choose to enter into the commerce stream for her senior high school years (she didn't tell me either so I'm not exactly sure). She's currently 25 this year and has graduated a few years ago and is now currently working in the finance department of an MNC, it's actually fine for her but she always felt like she has stepped into the wrong path ever since choosing to study commerce during senior high as she realized that she didn't actually have much interests and passion for finance/accounting/economics related stuff after she got into uni but by that time she felt that it was too late to patah balik too.

So she had this thought of working for a few years at the MNC and then earning enough and saving enough to go pursue a degree in Med, probably around the age of 30+ maybe 32 , as she's actually very interested in becoming a doctor/healthcare worker, do you think that this is possible and doable for her case?

She's thinking about taking up IGCSE and A-levels science subjects in the coming years as a private candidate for the basis of her route to fulfilling the entry requirements of getting into med school.

I asked her why the sudden thought of changing routes and she told me she just realized after graduating from high school that she is actually more passionate about devoting herself to saving the lives of others, but she had no choice because the subjects she took for SPM and UEC were all commerce related subjects back then so she only thought about the choice of getting a finance-related degree, but just recently she realized that it would actually be hard to continue working in the finance sector for so many years ahead so she decided to seek some advice to see if this plan is actually possible? (retaking IGCSE and A-levels sc subs as prv candidate --> pursue med degree --> practice as a doctor)

I can't really give her any sound advice on this matter as I am not from Med school (and lol I'm actually an accounting major so I can only give advice that is related to the acc sector), so I'm wondering if anyone has advice for her regarding this? Eg: Is this possible to work out? Even if it is possible, will it be too late for her to practice as a doctor considering her age?

Thanks!

Root Canal Treatment at Penang General Hospital?

Hello there,

would appreciate it if anyone can give me some advice on this issue

I have a tooth that was not properly filled by a dentist in China when I was studying abroad around Nov 2019, then decay happened so I visited another dentist for this when I returned to Malaysia on 2020 Jan/Feb

The local dentist told me that the decay has reached the point where it is really close to my nerves so it would actually be better for me to get Root Canal Treatment, but the price is way too high for a student like me to afford it (Dentist quoted around RM2800 inclusive of crown), so he told me that he'll try to fill it la but if it cracks again in the future then I should go for RCT already

so, unfortunately, it cracked a few days ago, and I'm really devastated la thinking about the price of getting RCT, even got into an argument with my family (in the end they offered to help me by giving me rm1000, but I denied it because I felt like a total loser as someone who is 23 and working part-time as a freelancer and also the fact that my parents kept thinking it was my fault not being able to save well (*when I actually worked my ass off to earn some income as well as study my ass off to get a scholarship just to pay off my uni tuition fees) or take care of my teeth well (*told them it was because the negligent dentist not filling the gap properly and I actually take very good care of my teeth by making sure I brush them, floss them, use a mouth rinse, etc), I just paid off my tuition fees for uni hence my account is kinda empty in case you're wondering why I don't have any savings)

so I'm considering getting my RCT done in Penang General Hospital if possible, but I can't find any info of the pricing and reviews about dental work in GH, if anyone has had experience in getting their teeth fixed in GH, mind telling me if it is okay?

I just have the phobia of getting a terrible dentist to fix my issue which might cost me further complications. :/

RM800 budget a month, how would you allocate it?

Just had a sudden thought in mind,

Imagine if you have RM800 per month as your allowance from your own salary, and you can only spend this amount of money throughout the whole month, how would you allocate it?

Assuming that 1) You are single, 2) Work from home, 3) Trying to eat healthily but in an affordable way, 4) Still trying to be able to enjoy life occasionally

I try to keep my budget around RM800 - 1000 per month so I get to save the remaining 65% from my salary as a freelancer but realized that groceries for my 3 meals daily memang took out a big chunk of the budget I give myself. at least RM400 sudah gone monthly trying to buy groceries to eat healthily in order to cut down body percentage while still maintaining muscle mass at a decent level Rent, ACCA exam fees, uni-related expenses, other necessities added up altogether sudah over RM800-1000 that I set for myself

PDL to CDL license renewal (3 months due)

Hello guys,

Just wanted to check if anyone knows that it is possible for me to renew my PDL that has expired for 3 months or so into CDL? I heard the grace period is 1 year, so just wanna confirm if that's correct?

Also, will there be any penalty charged if I can renew?

It expired around December but I was having my finals exam, and then MCO was announced just after I am about to finish my last subject lmao (MCO announced on 11 Jan that it will be starting on 13 Jan, exam ends on 12 Jan lol), hence the delay in renewing my PDL

I am planning to go to have it renewed next week, so just wanna check I am still eligible to do so as well as the price and penalty(if any)?

Also, are there any docs I have to prepare?

Thanks

Debit card lost and used by stranger for Grabfood

Hello, need help and advice

I accidentally lost my debit card a few days ago, it is a bigpay debit card, and there is no money inside the card

I just found out that someone has used my card for unauthorized transactions on grabmart/grabfood to buy items when I checked my app (which is also when I found out I have lost the card, I know this sounds dumb but I really did not realize until two days ago, it might have slipped off from my wallet because some compartments were quite loose)

The unauthorized transaction totaled up to about RM500 as I see in the app, which did not go through because there is no balance in the card, which is a good thing. However, the problem I am worried about now is that I also have the card linked on my grabcar account although I have not been using it (I added and used it a few times a long time ago when my other card didn't go through, that's why I added it as a spare payment method)

In this situation now, I wanna ask if anyone knows will anything happen to me since the card is also linked to my account? (I tried removing but cannot be removed, it says server blocked for deletion, I have also called grab but they kept on delaying the issue around, only told me that engineers are trying to see if they can solve the issue but until now I still have not received any reply from them even though I have told them this is a serious issue

Now I am just worried that they might charge me the amount (I am still a student and don't have that much to waste in as I just paid my tuition fees for uni), or worse case they will file and legal proceedings

can anyone please advise me what to do or what will happen in this kinda situation?

It's just ridiculous that they have been using the old RM980 poverty live for so many years, and has just finally figured out that the amount was no longer on par with the economy of our society now.

Average Savings/Earnings by age, for Malaysians

Hi there,

I've always wondered how much does an average Malaysian earn or save by the age of 22?

I'm trying to ask this as an evaluation of the current financial condition of Malaysian youths, as well as an evaluation of how I am doing as of now.

A brief introduction about myself,

I am currently 22 years old and am still an undergrad student, studying my Bachelor's Degree in China
I have been working on Upwork as a freelance translator/data entry typist ever since I graduated from high school in the year 2016. After working on that platform, I managed to hit my 20k USD earnings milestone as of today

I'm happy and blessed, but it got me wondering, how much does the average Malaysian earns by age?

I was thinking about this question as I have stated that I am studying in China, and right there, it seems like earning 10000 - 12000RMB per month seems to be possible for fresh grads so it's just a normal decent salary that is nothing worth celebrating about, while right here our fresh grads are only earning 1800-2500, and anyone earning over that amount is actually pretty blessed already. So I've been thinking, what do you all think? How much does the average Malaysian actually earn/save by age? I was also interested in knowing this as I haven't really been out working at the society yet, so I don't really have a very clear idea as of now.

Thanks for answering!
Average salary for accounting fresh grad?

Hello,

Does anyone here know around how much should an accounting fresh grad (bachelor's deg) be paid?

I am thinking about applying for a scholarship from IXX group, but I'll have to serve 4-5 years of bond with their company. I've tried asking previous recipients of the scholarship who are currently serving their bond about the salary they pay for them, especially those who graduated with an accounting/finance degree, the answer they gave me was around RM2600

I'm not sure what's the average/standard salary paid to accounting fresh grads so 2.6k seem like a good figure to me, but they told me that it is actually below market value ald

Can anyone enlighten me on this matter? I'm still in the midst of thinking whether or not I should apply for this scholarship, just worried that they'll use us as cheap labour after we graduate (We will have to pay back the full amt sponsored to us + ?% interest rates if we break the bond...so I'll have to make a wise move regarding this)

Thank you!

Top Malaysian Private Unis for accounting

Hey guys,

I am actually an accounting student myself, studying in UTAR

My cousin is interested in taking up his degree in accounting as well but I could not really provide him information about which school would be better for him to study his degree in as I have only been in UTAR before

All I could provide him was the course here in UTAR and also the pathway to becoming a chartered accountant.. But he'd like to know more about other schools as well to take into his consideration

P's: he does not want to take ACCA directly so that won't be considered by him.

He has told me that some of the universities that he would be interested in knowing more would be : INTI (Penang, specifically the UOW collaboration programme), Curtin Sarawak, UTAR (Sg Long), HELP Uni, KDU university (Penang & PJ), Disted college, Segi University.

And how would they far if they were ranked? (Example: KDU> Segi > UTAR? This is just an example)

If anyone has other suggestions about other unis which are good in the field of accounting , you could add it here too

However, my cousin will not be taking in universities such as Taylors, Sunway, Heriot Watt, Monash into consideration as his family won't be able to afford that, it would be too expensive for him and he will only be taking up PTPTN to cover his tuition fees (+the fact that PTPTN only loans you a maximum amt of rm13000 per year won't be able for him to cover up an amt as large as RM90000-100000+). But still, you could write down your opinions on those schools as well, that enables to know more regarding different unis & their accounting programme . (It could be beneficial for anyone who came through my post and wanted to know more information as such in the future too!)

Merci!

I've always had this question in mind and would be happy if anyone can enlighten me on this

I am enrolled in an undergraduate programme now so I have an idea of how it is like studying as an undergraduate student

Would postgraduate studies be the same as how undergraduate studies are like? As in you've got assignments and presentations to work with your friends during undergraduate, but would it be the same when you go for postgraduate? Or do you basically just finish off the whole programme by yourself?

A lot of undergrads would usually be involved in clubs and societies as well, what about post grad students? Do they still join those once they've reached post grad?

Merci!

Taiwan Universities vs Malaysian Universities

Hi there,

I am an UEC student and has been thinking whether or not I should go to Taiwan for my tertiary studies. I'm planning on taking up a bachelor's degree in either accounting or business/international business

Can anyone give me some advice on this? Would studying in Taiwan be better than studying here? The pros and cons of studying abroad @ Taiwan vs Malaysia?

And does anyone know approximately how much would it cost to study in Taiwan?

Thanks!

INTI Penang VS UTAR Sg Long

Hey guys,

I'm currently at UTAR sungai long, studying my degree in accounting. But I'm somehow starting to go into depression as I felt like it was hard for me to make friends here and maybe the vibe doesn't quite suit me too. I'm from Penang so I was thinking about transferring to INTI Penang for the University of Herdfortshire Accounting and Finance degree. I need some advice here as I don't know well about the course structure of INTI penang as well as the vibe/studying environment there. The only reason why I'm thinking to do so is because it's located at my hometown..so yep.

Also, the reason why it was hard for me to make friends here is caused by the large amount of students in the accounting degree. I mean, yeah, I meet different people/friends throughout different subjects that I take, but I felt as if you personally can't get close with them..I've been feeling very isolated here lately. I've been feeling like homesick+isolated+stressed+anxious lately, which is starting to get me into depression again. I had no problem making friends at high school as I've always been socially active and an extrovert, but it's somehow hard for me here, I can talk to them about things but after all, you don't really become close to them as well so this is getting me really down as well. I miss home, I miss my close friends, I miss my family, I feel isolated, everything feels so overwhelming coming to me all at once. I feel as if people from my university are much more conservative as well , I felt like I couldn't talk much about other things to them. It's not like I despise the chinese culture/chinese education (I mean, I myself was from an independent chinese high school as well so that's not a problem for me) but I just, I can't blend in here, it's hard to describe how it really feels like, it just sucks.

So yeah, that's me there, I've been thinking if I should transfer to INTI penang, but somehow I am also concerned about the syllabus/quality of education in both universities , so it would be very much appreciated if anyone could advise me on this matter. Or can anyone recommend me about other unis as well?

Degree in accounting vs Law?

Hi there,

I am a student who does not like mathematics, but accounting is fine for me. As far as I know, all the maths related subjects are not too hard, so I might still be able to handle it. I personally have been enrolled in the programme for accountancy for a semester so I kind of know how the course structure is like.

However, lately I have been thinking and contemplating whether or not this is what I really want to work as for the next 30 years of my life, crunching numbers away.
I have actually been interested in Law last time, but due to some complications that happened for the UEC qualification last year, I decided to put off law and took accounting instead, but during last Dec, YB Teo Nie Ching has fought for the UEC issue and it was a success..however I have already been enrolled in the accounting programme by that time. It seems to me that I am only taking accounting as I was unable to take up law last time, but my concern is also that I do not know how studying law is like and I am afraid that I might go into the wrong pathway... Also, I'm a student who likes memorizing/understanding rather than calculating (although I can, but I am not too good at it). Often in highschool I scored better grades for subjects like sejarah/history/geography rather than mathematics, I'm not sure if this would make a difference for me to choose between law and accounting, but I'm putting this fact out just in case.

I have been thinking whether or not to stay in the field of accounting lately, or to transfer back into law..

Can anyone enlighten me on how is it like in the field of law? How long will it take for me to finish my studies in both fields? The demand for lawyers vs accountants? Career prospects? Or other aspects that I should consider about?

Also, I know with a professional paper in accounting (eg : Acca/ICAEW..etc) I can work globally, in different parts of the world. But what about a law degree, or in my case, I will be taking up CLP after the degree.

I have been really lost lately and I've been starting to feel depressed over myself not being able to make a decision again...Please help me out

I am from a middle class family, so I really couldn't afford to transfer here and there if I found out it doesn't suit me, so this may be the very last chance I have to make a change for my field of study.

Here are some things to consider as well :

- I am a scholarship recipient in my current uni, but if I go to BAC/ATC for law I might not be able to receive any scholarships...but I will loan from PTPTN to cover up my fees

- If I transfer to law now, I will only lose my scholarship at my current uni (UTAR), so there won't be any money from me or my parents personally that would be lost in regards of the tuition fees that I have paid in the past (in my case, its being paid by my scholarship..so yep), but the money I have paid for my rent/things I have bought for my hostel would be considered a sunk cost if I transfer to BAC/ATC.

- Please send help.
