Education Ministry apologises for flag error in SPM report

PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry has issued an apology for the error in its depiction of the Jalur Gemilang in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Examination Results Analysis Report distributed on Thursday (April 24).

In a statement, it said that such negligence is unacceptable as the Jalur Gemilang symbolises the nation's grandeur and sovereignty.

“Immediate and strict action has been taken against all involved, and a detailed investigation is underway. The printed analysis reports have been requested for return, and immediate corrections are being made,” it said.

The AI-generated photos have since been removed from the soft copy of the Report on the Examinations Board website.

PM announcement prompts Annuar to activate ‘Muafakat Nasional’

PETALING JAYA: Following the announcement that Anwar Ibrahim will become the 10th prime minister, former Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa says he will soon “activate” his NGO named Muafakat Nasional.

In a Facebook post, Annuar said the NGO will serve to foster cooperation and unity among the ummah and strengthen the political system, based on the Rukun Negara and Federal Constitution.

The former Ketereh MP also said the King’s decision to appoint Anwar to the top post should be respected by all Malaysians.

He said the new government’s focus should now be on ensuring stability in the country and ushering in prosperity for the people.

“Any gathering and activity that can lead to disharmony must be stopped,” he said, signing off his posting as the president of “Muafakat Nasional (NGO)”.

Last month, an aide of Annuar sought to clarify that Muafakat Nasional was not a political party but was registered as an NGO with the Registrar of Societies.

PETALING JAYA: A statement circulating on social media quoting Hishammuddin Hussein as saying 10 Umno MPs were backing Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister is false, according to an aide.

A communications officer to the Sembrong MP confirmed that the statement was not legitimate.

The fake statement, alleged to have been signed off by Hishammuddin, quoted him as saying that Muhyiddin had his support as well as that of the MPs of Kuala Pilah, Jelebu, Jempol, Simpang Renggam, Tenggara, Lipis, Paya Besar, Tampin and Titiwangsa.

Earlier, Hishammuddin maintained that he would not support any cooperation with Pakatan Harapan to form the government and was ready to be sacked by the party for his stand.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional have agreed to jointly form the Perak government.

This was confirmed by PH today.

In the general election, Perikatan Nasional had won 26 state seats in Perak, followed by PH with 24, and BN with nine.

Previously, Perak Perikatan Nasional hinted that it would work with BN to form the state government.

The Muhyiddin Yassin-led coalition had ruled out collaborating with PH.

PETALING JAYA: The hung Parliament will exacerbate uncertainty in the country and take a toll on the economy, says the head of a think tank.

“It will create nervousness in the market. We can expect turbulence where the ringgit and the stock market is concerned,” said Carmelo Ferlito of the Center for Market Education.

Ferlito said as no party had the majority, the next government will likely comprise political parties that wanted to see each other’s demise.

“The order of the day will be staying in power and populist policies will likely be prioritised ahead of policies the country needs,” he told FMT.

“All economists agree that 2023 will be a difficult year and this means the government must be prepared to make difficult decisions in the interest of the economy even if they are unpopular.”

But Ferlito said he does not see this happening.

Instead, like in the past two years, he believes the country will see more populist decisions, a lack of consistency in policies, and U-turns.

Yeah Kim Leng of the Sunway University business school also said the hung Parliament was “not ideal”, and agreed that populist policies were likely to continue.

“Aside from policy uncertainty, there are also concerns that public spending will be put on hold until we have a new government in place.

“Investors want clarity, so expect major decisions on investing in Malaysia to be postponed until the dust is settled,” he told FMT.

Yeoh also pointed out that with Malaysia having experienced a peaceful transition of power before, there would not be any political unrest in the country.

“All coalitions are also generally market-friendly,” he said.

“The next government’s main challenge is reining in spending and increasing revenues. Without fiscal reforms, we will see debt increasing.”

In June, it was reported that Malaysia’s debt had hit the RM1.3 trillion mark.

KUALA LUMPUR: Preliminary results of a study conducted by the Pontifical Catholic University in Chile (UC) showed that the Covid-19 Sinovac vaccine booster dose could activate cellular immunity against the Omicron variant, on subjects who were given two doses of the same vaccine previously.

Meanwhile, UC's Academic and Scientific director for the CoronaVac Scientific-Clinical Study in Chile, Dr Susan Bueno said, it was most likely that partial recognition of these variants had contributed to the effectiveness of the vaccine among the population, despite the variants being widespread in Chile.

"Population data shows that the Covid-19 Sinovac vaccine has worked well so far to control the variants that have emerged," she said.

The statement also informed that researchers in Chile in collaboration with the Catholic University, the University of Chile, the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in California (USA) and Sinovac in China were also in the midst of conducting a study on the antibody response against the new variant.
