PETALING JAYA: Seorang veteran PAS bercanggah pendapat dengan Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad mengenai tugu helang di Pulau Langkawi, dan bertegas binaan seperti itu akan mengundang “maksiat” dan “fitnah”.

“Patung helang atau apa-apa patung jua adalah dilarang. Adanya patung mendekatkan orang kepada maksiat,” kata bekas pesuruhjaya PAS Wilayah Persekutuan, Subky Latif, dalam penulisannya yang diterbitkan Harakahdaily, lidah rasmi parti itu.

Awal bulan ini, Dr Mahathir mempersoalkan gesaan beberapa pihak supaya patung dan tugu dirobohkan kononnya kerana melanggar hukum Islam.

Bekas perdana menteri itu berkata tindakan itu tidak akan menjadikan umat Islam lebih warak.

“Sehingga kini, tidak ada orang Islam yang bersembahyang atau menyembah tugu helang di Langkawi. Merobohkannya tidak menjadikan orang Melayu lebih Islam,” kata Dr Mahathir.

Ia susulan gesaan beberapa pemimpin agama kerajaan yang mempersoalkan kewajaran mengekalkan tugu helang setinggi 12 meter di Dataran Lang, yang menjadi mercu tanda Pulau Langkawi.

Bagaimanapun, Subky berkata sama ada sesuatu patung dijadikan sembahan atau tidak, ia “mendatangkan fitnah” kerana “boleh jadi disembah orang setengah orang khususnya penyembah berhala”.

“Patung adalah makhluk yang Allah tidak suka. Ia adalah barang maksiat. Ada maksiat dosanya bagi orang yang membuat maksiat itu. Tetapi ditanggung oleh semua termasuk orang yang terlibat dengannya seperti patung itu. Kita tidak membuat dan tidak suka padanya, tapi dibiarkan depan mata dosa dapat oleh semua,” kata Subky.

Beliau kemudian cuba mengaitkan isu itu dengan usaha PAS melaksanakan hudud.

“Adapun bagi orang Melayu sekadar roboh patung, hudud tak mahu, sembahyang pun tidak, Islamnya had itu sajalah.”

Subky kemudian mempersoalkan iman bapa saudara Nabi Muhammad, Abu Talib, yang menurut sejarah merupakan orang yang sentiasa membela Nabi walaupun tidak mengisytiharkan secara terbuka dirinya seorang Islam.

“Lebih Islam atau tidak bergantung dari hidayat. Jika lepas mengetuk patung Allah beri hidayat, lebihlah Islam Melayu. Tapi Abu Talib buat seribu jasa pada Nabi, tak dapat hidayat apa gunanya?”

KUALA LUMPUR: Several leading automakers from Europe, China and Japan have expressed their interest to become Proton’s strategic partner, says International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed.

He said although the government had left it to the national carmaker to make the decision, there were several vital criteria it had to consider when choosing its strategic partner.

“The government wants Proton to ensure its strategic partner has the capability to lift the company once again.

The strategic partner must have the technology, capital and export network,” Mustapa told reporters after the ministry’s “Hari Raya Networking with the Private Sector” celebration here today.

He also said the strategic partnership between Proton and a foreign counterpart was necessary to help the company, a small player at international level, expand its business.

About 2,000 people, including orphans and the elderly, attended the celebration.

"Selangor religious affairs executive councillor Ahmad Yunus Hairi has called on mosques throughout the state to hold solat hajat (special prayers) to pray for the cancellation of Selena Gomez's upcoming concert in Shah Alam.
"All mosques in Selangor have been ordered to hold solat hajat after Friday prayers or whenever it is appropriate, before the concert is held to pray to Allah in hopes that the concert will be cancelled.
"(May) our beloved Selangor not be struck with disasters, and the concert organisers enlightened by Allah," the PAS leader said in a statement today.
The Selena Gomez concert is slated to be held this coming Monday in Stadium Melawati.
Ahmad Yunus' order is in conflict with Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali's remarks that there is nothing wrong with the concert as long as it gets the proper clearance.
PAS had protested the concert claiming that Gomez is too sexy.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bahasa Melayu-Indonesia has been named as one of 10 most widely used languages in the world.
According to Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid, the selection was made by ‘Ethnologue: Languages of the World’ – a comprehensive online referral centre for languages run by the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) International.
He said the Malay language (Bahasa Melayu) had also been recorded as one of the 10 most widely used languages on the Internet by Internet World Stats for 2015.
“Bahasa Melayu is in 8th position, and is ahead of French, which is ranked 9th and with such potential, Bahasa Melayu-Indonesia must be empowered or promoted as a key feature of the Asean community,” he said during the opening of the 55th Conference of the Language Council of Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia (MABBIM) and linguistic seminar here today.
The text of his speech was read by the ministry’s secretary-general, Dr Madinah Mohamad.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 — A National University of Malaysia (UKM) student is claiming to have injured herself from starvation made necessary by a lack of funds.

According to a Harian Metro report today, the Sabahan claimed she sustained a punctured intestine due to her inability to afford food since her foundation days.

“Due to lack of food, my intestine was punctured, causing me to vomit blood,” she was quoted as saying in the report.

“Doctors advised me to eat and warned that I was at risk of intestinal cancer if I kept up my habit of not eating. But I couldn't do anything as I had no money,” said the girl named only as Nur.

She claimed that she was left with just RM150 for an entire semester after she used her National Higher Education Corporation (PTPTN) study loan of RM3,000 to pay for her fees and preparation costs.

Nur said she could not bring herself to ask her parents, a seamstress and a fisherman in Sandakan, for money, and soothed her hunger by reading the Quran.

Hers was not the only case of impoverished students reported by Harian Metro, who also met another student who claimed she had to miss classes due to the gastric attacks that she developed due to not being able to afford food.

The student who was identified as Shakira said she had to make RM30 last a week for food as well as study essentials.

Incidents of students struggling to cope with rising cost of living were highlighted last year, after some complained to then deputy finance minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan about the impact of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on their finances.

Ahmad had then advised them to cook their meals in their living quarters to minimise the burden of the consumption tax, prompting backlash from the students.

PETALING JAYA: Abdul Rahman Dahlan, the Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government has announced his decision to institute legal action against Malaysiakini for misquoting his remarks on urban issues and presenting them out of context.

At a press conference today, Abdul Rahman said he had ordered his attorneys to sue the online news portal.
He also took to Facebook, posting a lengthy message this morning where he explained in detail how his harmless statements on tolled roads and “reverse migration” had been distorted by the news portal to the extent that he was ridiculed by the Malaysian public as well as netizens.

On the issue of tolled roads, Rahman denied saying that city dwellers should wake up earlier than usual if they wanted to take alternative routes instead of paying toll to get to the office.

He explained that what he said was: “When there is a tolled road, there is an alternative non-tolled road. If we take the alternative roads, we may be delayed due to traffic congestion and traffic lights. Therefore, we have to spend more time travelling.”
According to Rahman, he was also misrepresented when he was reported as suggesting that city residents “balik kampung” as a solution to offset the increasing cost of living in the city.

He said he was simply expounding on the sociological concept of “reverse migration”, whereby urban residents relocated to suburban or rural areas.
“I commented that migration from rural areas to cities is happening too rapidly in this country, and is putting too much pressure on urban facilities such as housing, transportation, healthcare and education… I also said that villages these days are not like in the past. Almost all villages are equipped with complete facilities,” he wrote.

As a result of this, he said he was left with no choice but to sue Malaysiakini for misreporting him in their coverage. “Although online media is very dear to me, what was done by Malaysiakini has overstepped the boundaries of journalism ethics and damaged my reputation,” he said.
Other news portals may also face lawsuits from him.
“I also maintain my right to take legal action against online news portals that have tarnished my reputation,” he warned.
