NTLDR is missing - please help

I was trying to help a friend install Windows XP. Her hard drive crashed so she got an old, still workable one from another computer. It's been formatted. Now before anyone say to try Google, I've done that and haven't found anything that helps. Most of what I've found deals with problems restarting Windows, not installing it.

Now when ever we try to boot from the WinXP CD to start the installation process, we get a "NTLDR is missing, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" message almost immediately. We never even reach the "press any key to boot from CD' point.

I've checked the IDE cables and jumpers and everything seems to be ok. Before I did this, I got "Disk not ready, system halted". Haven't gotten that since I adjusted the jumper on the hard drive.

I've tried to swap the CD-ROM for another one - same problem.

Anyone have any idea? Thanks in advance.

Anyone here doing/has done CLP? What's it really like? We've all heard the horror stories... how much of all that is actually true? Seems so impossible to pass...

Come and share your experiences.
