my belkin wireless router died!

A year ago I bought the belkin wireless router model f5d7230ak4 that comes with a lifetime warranty. Recently it died with no light at all and I sent it back to the shop to see if they could repair or replace the router. FYI it's not due to lightning strike and the adapter is working fine suggesting that the router itself either fried or short-circuit.

However they claimed that based on my date of purchase has exceeded the warranty period of 1 year and thus no replacement for that end up i bought a new router.

Just to check with you guys what's the belkin "lifetime warranty" all about?
