Households may bear the brunt of the next crisis

Khazanah’s study of the household income is backed by the data on individual income registered with the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). According to data provided by the EPF on employees’ total income, 96% of the active EPF members earn less than RM6,000 per month.

Some 85% earn less than RM4,000 per month and 62% of its active members earn less than RM2,000 per month. So, of EPF’s 13 million contributors, only 4% earn more than RM6,000 per month.

Next, let us move on to another set of statistics.

Most of the households that earn less than RM6,000 a month are saddled with a car loan that goes on for probably more than seven years, a monthly payment for the 50-inch television and an Astro bill to go with it. Not to be forgotten is the bill for Internet connection.

On top of all this comes the huge monthly housing loan instalment.

House prices in general have gone up beyond the affordable levels of most households. A household with an RM6,000 monthly income is unlikely to be able to afford a home costing more than RM400,000.

For those who have managed to buy a property, the instalments are probably over a long period of 35 years or more.

The reality is that most households are addicted to debt, just like the state of the nation, to fund their requirements.

The federal government deficit as a percentage of the GDP, a measure to indicate the strength of public financial, is expected to decrease to less than 53% next year. The unhealthy threshold is 55%. However, the liabilities of the non-financial public enterprises (NFPEs) have been rising.

NFPEs are stand-alone companies that are owned by the federal government and issue debt papers to carry out projects such as the Mass Rapid Transit system and the takeover of the water assets from the state governments. The debt they hold are not part of the federal government’s balance sheet.

As for households, thanks to years of cheap money and ample liquidity, monthly payments have become the way of life for them to enjoy the luxuries of life.

Every 10 years or so, the Asian markets have gone through some kind of crisis, sometimes due to their weak economic fundamentals or problems in the West. In 1998, Asian countries were ravaged by the currency crisis that ripped apart most countries and caused a meltdown of Bursa Malaysia.

In that crisis, corporations were hit so badly that many had to close shop. More than 100 companies were delisted from Bursa Malaysia. Households were generally not affected then.

In 2008, the Malaysian economy came under pressure due to the financial crisis in the US that saw lending between banks come to a halt at one stage. This caused financial chaos that prompted the US Government to step in and come out with a programme that essentially pumped money into the system. The Malaysian economy suffered generally, but households were shielded.

The biggest fear for the next few years is that interest rates would go up in emerging markets such as Malaysia. This is due to the US raising rates there, causing a sharp outflow of funds. Already, there is a shortage of US dollars in emerging markets, as indicated by the depreciation of the emerging-market currencies against the US dollar.

When the interest rates rise, will households bear the brunt of it?

Diet Plan for Ectomorph (advice needed)

A little history, I've peaked at 71 kg's from weight lifting in the past but it took 9 mths while to reach that weight hitting the gym 3x a week. Without regular weight exercise and protein intake it will drop to 63-64ish.

I'm currently on 20 eggs diet. (just started 1week, was also my previous diet at 10+ eggs)

current weight 66kg

20eggs = 120 grams of protein (Alternative canned tuna but it's a pain preparing and i dont really like tuna)

I need advice on alternative cheap protein (can't take whey very lactose intolerant)| And foods to increase my calories intake.

I'm hovering on 1.8k-2k calories a day is that enough? If it's not what are easy cheap ways of increasing my calorie intake.

Forgot to add i've Esophagitis, so i cant just overeat.
