Family Business Network (FBN) Pacific Asia

Myth or Reality? Can Family Businesses go beyond the fabled three generations?
Kuala Lumpur will host its first Family Business Network Pacific Asia Regional Summit which aims to counter these age old myths:

‘Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations’

‘富不过三代’

Wealth never survives three générations

‘Padre Bodeguero; Hijo Caballero; Nieto Pordiosero’

Father–merchant; Son–gentleman; Grandson–beggar

      FBNPA Regional Summit 2010
7-10 November
“Beyond three generations – Myth or Reality”

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 22 September 2010 – Family Business Network Pacific Asia (FBNPA), a regional chapter of FBN International, the leading international family business organization, will hold its Regional Summit at the Crowne Plaza Mutiara in Kuala Lumpur from 7 to 10 November 2010.

Family Businesses are the cornerstone of the economy, but despite the large role they play, the contributions of family businesses are often short-lived. In general, three in ten family businesses survive into the second generation and a mere one in ten into the third. The tumultuous nature of transition is not merely an Asian phenomenon, as across the globe, family-owned firms have been vulnerable when it comes to handing down the business.

Yet, as pointed out by Family Business Scholar and Program Committee member, Dr Johnben Loy ‘there exist many business families around the world that have successfully made the transition and endured beyond the fabled three generations.’

Designed by members from some of Malaysia’s leading business families, this year’s FBNPA summit will focus on Transition and Generational Change – topics that have traditionally been considered taboo by many Asian families yet need to be addressed to ensure sustainability across the generations. The summit is FBNPA’s key platform to bring and share ideas from leading family business practitioners, academics and experts.

Over 100 thought leaders, CEOs and owners of the region’s most influential business families will discuss and discover, through shared learning, how they can combine their deep-rooted traditions with a higher level of entrepreneurship, innovation and responsibility to enable families to confront the challenges, counter the myths and create an enduring legacy for their family, business and society.

The Regional Summit will feature world renowned and respected family business experts and is structured to create opportunities for personal and family learning and reflection. Plenary sessions allow for sharing of best practices from founders and the introduction of innovative frameworks from new leaders. An engaging World Café on ‘Breaking Taboos’ explores the issues of transitions and encourages delegates to meet the challenges of generational change. Highly interactive Workshops explore the task of creating the future for family businesses through navigating the current and future generations in family enterprise. In-depth case studies enable family businesses to develop their own family and business plans and put key learnings into practice. Special Learning for Families sessions provide additional opportunities for shared learning from a global network of family business experts. Family Visits and Social events broaden networks and provide the open spaces for discussion, engagement and exploration of new ideas.

For more information on the regional summit please go to www.fbnpa.org or contact

1) Mr Law Gin Kye FBNPA Regional Summit Program Committee	gin@lawassociate.com +6012-2772375

2) Lena St George-Sweet Assistant Director, FBNPA lena@fbnpa.org +65 6411 9810 / +65 9784 3124

About Family Business Network (FBN)
The Family Business Network (FBN) is the leading international family business organization with more than 3,400 member companies in 45 countries. FBN member companies cover many industries and range in size from medium to large international corporations that have successfully transitioned through several generations. The Family Business Network and FBN members share the following common objectives - promoting family business, developing new generation opportunities and sharing best practices and knowledge within the network.

About Family Business Network Pacific Asia (FBNPA)
Family Business Network Pacific Asia (FBNPA) is a regional chapter of FBN International and covers China, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Thailand. While sharing the fundamental philosophy of FBN International, FBNPA recognises the historical and cultural diversity of family businesses in the Asia Pacific region and seeks to address issues which are unique or specific to this region, particularly in the area of transformation, transition, leadership development, active citizenship, family values and relationship.

FBNPA aims to promote family business as a sustainable model of business and to help advance the positive role of family businesses in the community. It is a platform for promoting family values and sharing best practices and experiences, through research, capacity building, networking and outreach programmes.

Vision: Create a vibrant community of family businesses that serves as a model of sustainability.

Mission: Engage progressive business families and thought leaders to cultivate an environment of shared learning to effect positive change.

‘Family businesses are the oldest form of enterprise. Their long term vision and ability to align their values and practices with the greater community allow them to meet present-day challenges while projecting for future generations to come. I encourage all family businesses to model sustainable entrepreneurial practices that effect long term positive change, focusing on the triple bottom line of profit, people, and planet.

-- Frederick Chavailt Tsao, Group Chairman of IMCPAA and President of FBNPA

Accident Palarysed Dog Left Days 2 Death @Roadside

MDDB Notice Board

WE ARE SHOCKED!

We are posting this with a very heavy heart. A friend, Eileen, who is an independent rescuer called us this morning to say that someone had informed her of a dog that had met with an accident in PJ – somewhere in Taman Megah. This is Eileen’s message after the dog had been found dead. She had also sent some pics.

The dog died right in front of a newly opened cafe in Taman Megah nearby to Lim Kok Wing institute. He has a collar on. Was believed to have been hit by a car, Both rear legs have been crushed and can't move. Have been there for several days but no one came forward to help. Somebody left a packet of rice but doubt the poor boy could move to eat. What has our society come to??? Poor dog in terrible suffering May he RIP. May his death not in vain but help raise awareness that people can do something for injured dogs.

The person who had called told her he was informed the dog, which had a shattered leg, had been lying there for the last three to four days. We are shocked – why didn’t anyone even bother to help this poor dog. What about its owners – did they know that their dog was missing? We made immediate arrangements to rescue the dog but when the caller went back to the scene this afternoon, the poor dog was dead. However, it was still alive when he had passed by in the morning. We shudder to think the pain, fear, hunger and thirst the poor dog must have endured these last few days. Why didn’t anyone even think about calling the SPCA, PAWS or even us – as we are certain that there would have been many people who had seen this dog. What is most appalling is that people can actually sit and eat at the restaurant while the dog was lying there dying! If anyone of you happen to come across this blog posting –SHAME ON YOU! Dogs are mammals just like us that also undergo all the pain and emotions that we are capable of experiencing. Had he been rescued on the day of the accident or even the second or third day – the dog may still be alive. So, we beg you people – next time you see an injured animal on the streets – don’t look the other way. Help it! If its money that you don’t want to spend – you can always call us for a reimbursement – we will pay you back even if it takes our entire month’s salaries. This lack of apathy towards animals in need of help is indicative of a defective society. We just can’t believe that not even one person had cared enough to help. To motorists, next time you hit a cat or a dog – please do the right thing – doesn’t just drive or scoot off. RIP doggie – we wish we had known of you earlier.

Selayang Municipal Council Dog Pound Cruelty

Hell - [Majlis Perbandaran Selayang
Jalan Industri 3/5
Taman Pelangi, Rawang[/B]

MDDB Notice Board : http://malaysiandogsdeservebetter.blogspot.com/

MAYHEM IN SELAYANG

If the Klang pound was bad, the Selayang Municipal Council pound is mayhem at its worst. These pictures were taken by an animal activist who has been trying to bring change to the Selayang pound for years. The pictures were taken today morning (21-02-2001). According to her there were many dead dogs lying around and some had been packed in black garbage bags and placed at the entrance of the pound. There were a lot of blood on the floor and according to the caretaker the dogs have not been given food and water at all because ‘they did not have containers.’ He said the Department of Veterinary Services people have not been to the pound for about a month. The dogs are dropping dead of starvation and dehydration. The place is a nightmare and even some of the councilors have voiced their concern to us. So, people we have to go back to doing what we did for the Klang Pound which had brought about some change. Please forward this to as many people as possible and write to the people whose e-mails we have included in this post. Please also sms the local councilors to tell them that we will not tolerate such cruelty. According to the activist - she has been highlighting the deplorable state of the pound for the last three years but no one had taken the initiative to do anything about it. She says she has seen many horrific things during her almost weekly visits to the pound - such a dog with one eye popping out once. She also alleges that alived puppies were simply washed into the drains. According to her, the vet who's supposed to go the the pound does not do so anymore because of the new location at Rawang. So, she says the dogs are left to die of starvation. These are serious allegations. However, we are sure that people , who had not bothered to do anything so far, will all rush to the pound soon. Whatever, it is - let justice be done for the voiceless.

YANG DIPERTUA
MAJLIS PERBANDARAN SELAYANG
Datuk ZAINAL ABIDIN BIN AZIM
selayangmesra@mps.gov.my

Dr. Razif Zainol Abidin
Pengarah Kesihatan & Pelesenan
razif@mps.gov.my
Tel : 03-61370757 Faks : 03-61388300

YAD.
UPM Conducts Cancer Experiments @ DBKL Pound Dogs

Please click : http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/100005

Malaysiakini : Vivisection - KL City Hall a supplier to UPM
Concerned Parents | Mar 11, 09 4:48pm

Our children are studying at the faculty of veterinary medicine (UVH) in University Putra Malaysia (UPM) located at Serdang, Selangor.

The dean of the faculty has been using young and healthy dogs for all kind of experimental and lab tests. Most of the dogs used are less than one year old. Some are pedigrees and believed to be pets lost by their owners. The dogs must be healthy in order to fulfill the university’s requirements. )

It is learnt that the post-graduate students obtain the dogs from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall dog pound every week and operate on them in order for them to study the organs and conduct all kind of experiments.

These students are divided into groups and each group is given a young and healthy dog for experimental purposes. The dogs are injected with cancer cells. The cancer cells are left to multiply in their body.

Several forms of treatments are randomly tested upon these animals. In hopes of maintaining the integrity of this experiment, the dogs are made to starve, leaving them dehydrated, howling and highly traumatised.

As these experiments require a long period to produce the results, invasive methods are used on the poor dogs. Apart from this, after the operations, the students do not stitch up the poor dogs properly after operating on them alive to study the organs,

This leaves the dogs’ intestines dangling outside the stomach while the dogs are still alive.

Sometimes, the post-graduate students euthanise a dog but do not ensure that the dog has died. The dog is put in the ‘cold room’ (or something like that) waiting for disposal. The next day, when the staff went to get the carcasses of the animals, what did the staff see?

The dead dog was in a posture that showed that it was trying to crawl out with all its entrails hanging out, eyes popped out - frozen - of course.

What did the posture of the dog indicate? That it was not dead yet at the time it was put in the cold room. There was a big hue and cry after that incident. We just can’t begin to imagine the excruciating pain and trauma that the poor dog went through before it died or froze to death.

All this due to the endless supply of dogs from KL City Hall’s dog pound.

During the experiments, the dogs are subjected to constant pain as the cancer progresses. Such an act is an act of cruelty against these innocent animals. How much they must be hoping that they could just kill themselves.

The dogs are confined in small kennels behind UPM-UVH post-mortem lab while some are kept in old and rusty cages in the post-mortem lab. The place is in horrendous, appalling and in a dreadful condition.

Perhaps UVH professors Dr Nadzariah Cheng (Paws ex-president), Dr Bashir, Dr Noordin and Dr Hassan from UPM can answer us on these cruelty issues ?

We have come to know that UPM organises annual events to help in raising funds for taking care of stray dogs . Every year a ‘Dogathon’ event in August is run by UPM to raise funds for these strays. It serves as a platform to address the issue of stray dog awareness.

But on the other hand, young and healthy dogs are being used for inhumane experiments without the knowledge of animal lovers and activists. It is clear now what their true intentions are.
