France attack: Terror probe opened as female policeworker stabbed to death inside station near Paris

Anti-terror officers open an investigation after a woman is stabbed in the throat at a police station near the French capital.

An administrative worker has been stabbed to death inside a policestation in France, before her attacker was shot and killed nearby. A police source said the woman was stabbed in the throat during the attack just inside the station in Rambouillet, a town southwest of Paris, home to a former royal estate.

Prosecutors have opened a terrorism investigation although no details have been given on the attacker's identity or motive.

The woman was a 49-year-old administrative employee who worked for the national police service.

French President Emmanuel Macron has tweeted to pay tribute to the victim, who he named as Stephanie.

"In the fight against Islamist terrorism, we will not give up," he added.

Karl Olive, vice president of the regional council, said on BFM television: "We are in a state of astoundment."

A police source told Reuters news agency the attacker had Tunisian nationality, was in France legally and had no police record.

He was also not known to intelligence agencies, another source said.

Anti-terrorism prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard said his office was looking into terrorist motives because the attacker had staked out the station beforehand, and also because of statements he made during the attack and his targeting of a police officer.

Witnesses allegedly heard the suspect say "Allahu akbar" - Arabic for "God is great" - during the attack, according to the official.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex rushed to the scene with other officials shortly after the incident, pledging the government's determination to "fight terrorism in all its forms".
Paris region president Valerie Pecresse called the attack "cowardly and barbaric", adding: "The killer took [the victim] by surprise, she had just come out of the police station."
She also told reporters at the scene that the "face of France" was targeted.

"Police are symbols of the republic. They are France," she said.

British foreign secretary Dominic Raab said the UK offers its support to France following the attack, writing on Twitter: "We stand with our French friends and allies following tragic news of a female police officer killed by a terrorist in Rambouillet while doing her job."

Police cordons are surrounding the area following the stabbing.

France has seen multiple terror attacks in recent years, including several targeting police.

Runaway saudi woman reaches Canada

Toronto - "This is Rahaf Alqunun, a very brave new Canadian," Canada's foreign minister said with the 18-year-old who feared death if sent back to Saudi Arabia

A Saudi teenager who fled her family alleging abuse and got stranded at a Bangkok airport has arrived in Canada after being granted asylum there.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, 18, had been trying to reach Australia via Bangkok but was initially told to return to Kuwait, where her family were waiting.

She refused to fly back and barricaded herself into her airport hotel room, attracting international attention.

She also said she had renounced Islam, punishable by death in Saudi Arabia.

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland introduced the teenager as "a very brave new Canadian" but said that Ms al-Qunun was tired from her ordeal and long journey and would not be making any public statement on Saturday.

"She is a very brave young woman who has been through a lot... and she is now going to go to her new home," the minister added.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier told reporters that his country had granted a request from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to grant asylum.

"Canada has been unequivocal that we will always stand up for human rights and women's rights around the world," he said.

Ms Qunun told the BBC earlier that she was afraid her family would kill her.

"I can't study and work in my country, so I want to be free and study and work as I want," she said.

Separately, she told AFP news agency she had suffered physical and psychological abuse from her family, including being locked in her room for six months for cutting her hair.

A spokesperson for her family told the BBC that they did not wish to comment and all they cared about was the young woman's safety.

The UN's refugee agency (UNHCR) said it considered her to be a legitimate refugee and welcomed Canada's decision to grant her asylum.

"International refugee law and overriding values of humanity have prevailed," said the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi.
