What comes to your mind first when we talking about internet control inside organisation? What options available? Here are 3 most common methods:

1. Proxy
2. DNS Filtering
3. Router/Firewall built in features

Let's us talk about the router built in internet control features, here are some problems I faced:
- Many router dont indicate real time speed of each connected client. Hard to troubleshoot who is the one slow down the network.
- Router normally can do domain web filtering for HTTP traffic only, when comes to HTTPS, web filtering by domain name with wildcard is very difficult.
- Website visit history can be recorded by router for HTTP website only, HTTPS normally cannot be recorded and difficult to trace and block.
- HTTPS web filtering is very difficult and blacklisting domain one by one is too time consuming, that is why DNS filtering comes in. But router only can have one profile for DNS filtering feature. For more than one profile, normally router need to have DNAT function and change the DNS server based on source IP/MAC address. Not easy to configure and maintain.
- There are some expensive router that comes with annual subscription fee that can do these features and also have advanced graphics report but there are expensive and mostly only trained personnel can do and maintain the system.
- For DNS filtering, client IP updater is required. Router client IP updater is too limited and not stable. If you have static IP, then this is not an issue but it incur high cost.

So, what is the most cost effective and easy to use method for internet sharing and control? Answer is proxy + DNS filtering. There are many free proxy server available out there but end of the day I still go for CC Proxy for below reasons:
1. Indicating real time speed of each client. When network is slow, just open the software you know who is running highest speed and occupy how many connections
2. Accumulative bandwidth can be traced by selected period including the website they visit. If some employee is about to leave company and always connect to file upload website + data consumption is high, then you know what is happening.
3. Group feature can preset different blacklist/whitelist, DNS server address and time schedule. Any changes on the group will reflected directly to all users inside he same group. With these feature, you can apply different DNS filtering profile to different group of users.
4. Domain blacklist is very easy to add and support wildcard. If your DNS filtering website dont allow to add many sites, just add those sites in local blacklist file.
5. If you want to have ad-block function, you can download the blacklist domain from github and add another blacklist to any desired group. Group can have multiple blacklists.
6. Super secure authorization that can be any combination of IP address, MAC address and username+password method. There are some smart guy in company will try to change their IP to their manager IP to gain higher access rights or doing MAC spoofing.
7. Full access logs is available and comes with easy to use filter by users + content.
8. Web filter can prevent user download unauthorized file extension such as exe. You can prevent users download program and install on thier PC.
9. Highly restricted environment can setup whitelist web filtering mode, only domain inside the whitelist can be accessed.

Recently I found one interesting piece of hardware and bring back home to test it out. Named “firewalla”

Reviews:

- firewalla is super easy to setup which only take below 10 minutes. You don’t even need to remember any password.

2. Best monitoring device for small office or home
- every device network activity is recorded with detailed information. Http / https / vpn ? No problem, you can monitor which device spend how many usage on what ip/domain name.
- can switch on/off any devices with ease, just launch your app and do few clicks.
- can have push notification when new device comes in.

3. Ad block
- one click is enough to setup a ad free environment.
- firewalla is utilising third party dns server as ads filter.

4. Family mode

FILE PROTECTION OR SYSTEM PROTECTION?

Nowadays, most of peoples already have installed antivirus, malware protection, firewall, and many other system protection software.

Actually, what is the most important assets in your PC or mobile devices? The answer is data, agree?

Dont get me wrong, I dont deny that anti-virus or any system protection software are important. But it is not perfect, that is why when powerful ransomware like wannacry can break through these deference lines, it is a huge disaster. And many of peoples spends thousand to get back their files but only spend 2 digits to do format.

As system restore is not a very fun task to do, system protection software still very important and recommended to install on every devices.

But we must prepare for the worst and invest more on protection of valuable data. So, what are the thing we can do to protect these files?

File Versioning

From definition on wikipedia, a versioning file system is any computer file system which allows a computer file to exist in several versions at the same time. Thus, whenever your PC attacked by ransomware, you can just format your PC find back previous file version easily from cloud.

Recently, almost all famous file hosting services also provide files versioning. There are too many file storage option on the internet, which one is suitable for you? From my current short survey I found out some info that might useful for you:

1. unlimited storage option
- if you search on online trading platform, there are too many unlimited storage that selling at incredible cheap price and only need to pay one time fee. Possible? well, I leave the answer back to you. But you might need to treat your data seriously if you thing it is more costly than the one time cost.
- so, what is the most reliable and legal way to get cloud storage provider that offering unlimited storage? Well, the best answer I can find is google drive. The cost is USD10 per month complete with the email.
- as per google drive official website statement on unlimited storage, it must be more than 5 person to enjoy the unlimited storage. But may redditor share their experience that one account already can get unlimited storage. Clearly, google didnot enforce on the minimum 5 users rule.
- Any other solution? Yes, it is sharefile. It also provide unlimited storage with USD100 per month but comes with unlimited clients. So, you can create one account and as many as clients you need to do file sharing and management. You can share the account among your friends and split the cost. Sharefile more focus on business environment that have advanced function such as workflow control to ease out the document flow procedure.
- On the other hand, google also have client account but limited to 5TB. I am not sure the 5TB is maximum storage for one client or for combination of all clients. If you know, please comment it below.

2. Best value for money cloud option.
- I roughly check through popular and branded online storage supplier such as dropbox, sugarsync, onedrive, idrive, ....
- Basically the best for money option for me is onedrive with office365 home personal. It is around RM150 per year and you can always update to latest office 365. So the price is only about USD 3++ per month and you already can get 1TB cloud drive together with office 365.
- If you check dropbox, it cost you around USD 10 per month for you to get 1TB cloud storage for the time being. and without microsoft office.
- If you already using apple product and using icloud backup service, you can get 50GB at RM3.90 per month. This is for person that dont need a lot of space, that only want to store important data on cloud.

3. Tech enthusiast that want to control everything.
- There are few reliable open source cloud storage system such as seafile and owncloud available. If you have knowledge to play with linux system, then you can set it up yourself on vps provider such as digital ocean, linode, ...
- Pro is the system is maintain by you and you dont have to pay for any per user basis charges. You only need to pay vps fee together with cloud storage required and very flexible. The best part is vps itself, you can add many other services on the same server to serve you for various purposes.
- Cons is it can be very complicated if you dont have enough technical knowledge to secure and setup the system. HTTPS and firewall rules are 2 basic security measurement that very important if you have your own server. If you are setting it up for personal use and you need storage more than 500GB, then you should go for option 2 above

4. cloud storage at your home/office.
- need to setup port forwarding and ISP must provide public IP (IPv4) unless the storage support UPNP and go through server provided by hardisk supplier.
- Pro is you can extend the storage as many as you want and normally NAS often equip with user management software for unlimited client.
- Cos is you internet speed and third party website UPNP server must be very stable. user mainly complain this method is very slow compare to well established cloud storage provider.T
Tips: If your ISP cannot provide you public IP or you are not able to setup DDNS at public IP. You can use reverse ssh tunneling method with vps that might cost roughly USD5 per month.

5. file backup software that support file versioning
- not explore yet, but it should exist.

One important thing need to highlight is any service that provide lifetime subscription with one time fees normally have very short life cycle, or provide limited time free service update. It make no sense in business point of view and almost no one can survive unless you are the product who using their product. In another word, it means they pack your info as a product and sell to their actual customer to sustain their business.

DNS is domain name server which equivalent to phone book in your hand phone (or yellow pages if you around my age). When you key in anything in your browser ie "google.com", your internet device will ask your ISP DNS server where can I find this "guy" and your ISP DNS server might response:Th
1. I know it, please go head to address bla bla bla...
2. I know it, but cannot tell you as my "boss" dont allow me to do so.
3. I dont know it.

So, you can imagine how dangerous it is if you are refering to fake/illegal Domain Name Server. Because, when you key in the xxxbank.com in browser, it can direct you to the wrong address which is fake and the outlook of website is exactly the same as original one. From there, they can collect your private information and utilize it.

Now we all understand how important is the DNS server, then the next question is what is my current DNS server?
- You can find out what is your current DNS server by go to certain website that provide dns leak test feature. Just search "dns leak test" and you can get a lot of website to do testing.
- If you are using hand phone with ISP provider Malaysia, you will get Digi/Maxis/Umobile... Th

Is that possible to change DNS server ?
- For internet device that use wireless or wired connection, it is possible to change. You even can set DNS inside your home or business router.

Is that safe after I change my DNS server to reputable DNS server on my internet device?
- Yes, if you are located inside home/secure network
- No, if you are connected to public wifi. You still need a VPN to make sure you are safe. Reason is network admin can change your preset DNS server to thier DNS server as router (DNAT function) is managed by them. Secondly, hacker can launch man in the middle attack to broadcast fake DNS server throughout whole lan network too, the technical terms is ARP spoofing.
- When you are connected to VPN, public network router / hacker only have IP address of your connected VPN server but all data are encrypted. Your DNS request also encrypted and send to VPN server instead of searching for DNS server at local network and ask for address.
