MAZDA 3 vs. Tree (Fatal Accident)

I feel a very deep disappointment with Mazda 3’s frontal collision crashworthiness.

The firewall moved a lot during the crash and severely impacted the occupant.

The survivor’s space is pretty much non existent.

All the pillars are very well intact, but the firewall seems to lack proper reinforcement.

A quick search on the web for Mazda 3’s body structure yields an astonishing result. Popularly known as “SKYACTIV-BODY”, it uses extremely high-tensile steel up to 1,800 MPa. Higher than most carmarkers.

But a glance on the front structure, Mazda’s engineers might have “forgotten” the firewall area. It becomes one of the weakest points in the car’s structure.

Judging by the overall car’s deformation, this might not be a high speed collision. At most, it could be just around 60-70km/h.

I have been planning to get a CX-3 since last year. This triggers an extreme caution on my part.

Malaysian Steel Road Divider = Silent Killer

ATTENTION TO: Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS)

Every year, this silent killer is responsible for the death of countless of people. Cars which have lower ground clearance are vulnerable. Exceptions, perhaps to passenger vehicles such as SUVs and Pick-up Trucks. Most cars would not be able to protect its occupants in this type of crash.

The way the tip of the steel divider ended poses a great rist to motorists. It is capable of IMPALING someone inside the vehicle should that person is unlucky enough to collide at certain angles. Something has to be done to rectify this flaw. More lives could be saved in the future.

Some countries have adopted a simple solution to this problem. As what can be seen in the photo below. The tip of the divider is lowered to the ground. This will prevent unnecessary head-on crash.

MAJOR ACCIDENT: Proton Iriz vs. 3 Trailers

LIMA kenderaan termasuk tiga kenderaan berat terbabit dalam kemalangan di Selekoh Hakim, Jalan Pelabuhan Barat, Pelabuhan Klang hari ini menyebabkan tiga pemandu cedera.

Kejadian pada 10.35 pagi itu menyebabkan kedua-dua jalan di Jalan Pelabuhan Barat tidak boleh dilalui menyebabkan kesesakan kira-kira enam kilometer.

Lima kenderaan yang terbabit dalam kejadian itu adalah treler, dua lori dan dua kereta masing-masing jenis Proton Iriz dan Waja.

Ketua Polis Daerah Klang Selatan Asisten Komisioner Shamsul Amar Ramli berkata, siasatan mendapati dua kontena yang dibawa sebuah treler terjatuh ke laluan bertentangan menyebabkan pelanggaran empat kenderaan lain.

Beliau berkata, dua kontena yang berisi simen itu dibawa tanpa dikunci pada badan treler menyebabkannya terjatuh.

Menurutnya, kontena pertama yang penuh berisi simen terjatuh dan terbalik ke kiri bahu jalan bertentangan selepas dilanggar sebuah lori manakala Proton Iriz yang dipandu lelaki berusia 30 tahun melanggar kontena kedua yang terjatuh itu.

"Kereta itu kemudian dilanggar dari belakang oleh sebuah lori gas diikuti Proton Waja melanggar belakang lori gas berkenaan.

"Kejadian ini menyebabkan pemandu kontena cedera tangan kanan, pemandu lori yang melanggar kontena pertama patah tulang hidung serta pemandu Proton Iriz cedera tangan kanan dan kepala," katanya hari ini.

Beliau berkata, mangsa yang cedera dihantar ke Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) untuk rawatan lanjut.

Kejadian itu menyebabkan sebuah lori terbalik, dua kereta remuk dan lokasi dipenuhi dengan tumpahan simen.

Beliau berkata, kes disiasat mengikut Seksyen 43(1) Akta Pengangkutan Jalan (APJ) 1987.

PERODUA ushers in a new era of making SAFE CARS

In view of Perodua’s unexpected move to introduce Advanced Safety Assist (ASA), and minimum 4 airbags and ESC in its second generation MyVi, I personally think that Perodua deserves a big round of applause!

BUT, there are three things that I am still curiously waiting to find out in this second generation MyVi:

1. ASEAN NCAP ratings
2. types of steel used
3. first real-world MAJOR accident

I have been meticulously reading updates about this new MyVi, but I have not been able to find any information regarding the types of steel used by Perodua in constructing this model. This is the “missing puzzle” that I hope to find out later on.

But what I do know, is that there is very little similarity between the old MyVi chassis and the latest model. If you are among those who have strong interest in car crashes, you will notice Axia and Bezza chassis integrity after accidents have improved to some extent.

ACTIVE safety and PASSIVE safety go hand in hand. One cannot be over-emphasized at the expense of the other. The former is to stop accident from happening altogether while the latter is to mitigate the effects of accident when it does happen.

I consider Perodua’s introduction of ASA as a “second wave” of safe car movement. The first was started by Proton with the introduction of Proton Preve five years ago which I believe it still remains the gold standard for passive safety for cars below 100k price tag. Five years ago, “ESC” was a fancy term that most people hardly have any knowledge of. ESC today has achieved ubiquitous status that almost all new cars sold today has this technology as standard.

TOWARDS “VISION ZERO”: No deaths from car crashes on Malaysian roads

Kudos to those people who work relentlessly in advocating safe cars and those experts in automotive safety engineering. Their jobs are among the noblest of all. Thank you for the hard work in continuously improving our car’s safety.

There are HUMANS inside these cars. These humans could be you, your family, your friends, or someone you know. Nobody wants to witness trapped human bodies inside these cars whenever crash happens. Nobody wants to see anybody leaves this world “ungracefully” while people are staring at your death body and take photos of your dead body and share it to million others on the internet.

PROTON PREVE: A tribute

A recent tragic accident [1] which had claimed two innocent lives reveals the underlying problem with Malaysia's standards of vehicle crashworthiness. Despite of having ASEAN NCAP headquarters located in the very heart of our country. Fatal accidents continue to happen every single day on our soil.

Cars with very low crashworthiness are continued to be sold in this country. This type of car was a massive hit. It's a cause for celebration for some people. I feel very despise with people with this mentality. Those who are going to be in that car are human beings, not some replaceable plastic dolls! This type of company continues to operate with its sacred mantra "Low Cost, High Volume". Interestingly, Perodua once offered Proton its fuel-saving engines. May I suggest Proton to offer Perodua a decently strong steel?

The consistent performance of Proton Preve in almost every type of crash [2] excites me to trace people who are responsible for its impeccable safety records. Its hatchback variant has not recorded a single death since it was launched 5 years ago!

It was a "she" mind you, not "he". It was a woman, not a man who was the main brain behind Preve's safety. A mother who concerns about her child's safety. It was her and the team that had changed the landscape of local automative industry in relation to car's safety. It was these people that had knock some sense into Malaysian's psyche that cars are not just about how much fuel it uses per litre for 100 kilometre.
